Perkins On the Block?
According to Seth Stohs, it sounds like he is. Specifically he's been discussed in a Perkins-for-Jarrod Washburn swap.

Washburn?
Why are we so hell-bent on getting Jarrod Washburn? And, with the team dithering about whether to acquire Freddy Sanchez’s fairly-reasonable salary, why is picking up the rest of Washburn’s $10.35mm this year not a problem?
Good point on the salary topic.
Possibly because this organization values pitching? Although I’m not sure how valuable Washburn would actually be, considering the career he’s had.
Buster Olney and BBTN was pretty high on Washburn last night,
said he would be a great pickup if teams wanted to trade for a starter. Also showed some very good numbers for washburn, but I don’t remember what they were. No doubt Washburn in Seattle has been better than Perkins in MN, but two questions:
1. isn’t safeco field much more pitcher friendly than the Dome?
2. “swap” that implies a 1-1 trade right? Seattle isn’t as constrained by financial considerations as the Twins are so why would they want to swap a decent lefty for a bad one even if the bad one is cheaper?

Possible reasons
Seattle isn’t as constrained by financial considerations as the Twins are so why would they want to swap a decent lefty for a bad one even if the bad one is cheaper?
1) The “bad one” is much younger and could be reasonably expected to improve.
2) They think the “decent one”’s performance is not going to continue.
I can see a pretty decent argument for the second one. As fetch9 pointed out, Washburn does indeed have a better FIP than Perkins, but it’s more than a full run better than each of the last three years and far better than any year of his career except ‘02 (to which it’s roughly equal), so maybe the Mariners think that he’s on a hot streak and likely to regress. I don’t know where to find xFIP numbers (FanGraphs only has FIP), but I’d guess that’s also not as favorable – Washburn is sporting his lowest HR/FB since ’02.

Washburn's xFIP
2009 – 4.54
that is the lowest number by far. The site I got this from only goes back until 2004. In that time, he has never been under 5 besides this year.

Makes sense
He’s been in a pitcher’s park the last few years, so you’d expect his FIP to outperform his xFIP, since Safeco Field will keep his HR/FB low.

Bad trade idea
If a 1-1 swap. The Twins should be able to get more than that for Glen Perkins.
Part of the deal
would have been that the Twins would pay Perk’s salary, while the Mariners paid Washburn’s. If you were a fan of Washburn, who I’m sort of wishy-washy on, that would definitely be enough. Although it sounds like the Mariners, in this situation, would want an additional prospect.
Ridiculous
It’s arguable whether Washburn would actually be an upgrade over Perkins. Throw in a prospect as well as eating the salary? Type A potential is appealing, but wow. No thanks. I’d rather take my chances throwing Perkins out there, or give Swarzak (when Slowey is back) or Mulvey a chance…

THis would be soo stupid. It's like giving away money.
Bill Smith: he always knows what the Twins REALLY need. Not a second basemen, not bullpen help, nope. Another mediocre starter. Yay.

Type A????
If he’s a type A and we can do 1 for 1 I’d be up for it. Many figured Perkins to be our lowest upside starter at the beginning of the year. He had a great run in April but so did Livan and that on Ortiz guy(Ramon?, I honestly forget his name at the moment). I’m not putting him on the same plane but Washburn is having a great year and hopefully he could continue it. He was a very good pitcher back in the day with the Angels and he might be able to hoof out one more half a year for the Twins.
However, if we could put Perkins in a deal for say Mr. Sanchez, then I’d much rather go in that direction. I think all organizations have a pretty good idea what level free agent a player will be. Washburn is likely a B with the potential to be a type A. I’d almost rather see him be a type B as I’m not sure a team will be willing to give up there 1st round pick to sign Washburn. At best I think a lower tier team signs him and we get sandwich round pick and a high 2nd rounder. I’d be happy with that too. Worst case, no one signs him, he retires, we lose Perkins and only get a half year of Washburn.
There’s really a lot to think about with this trade and I think some on here are over valuing Perkins. If this were last year I’d say no way, but Washburn is putting up some good #’s and the instability of most of our starters is very frustrating. Hopefully a guy like that might help that.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
??????????
What are you guys talking about? like fetch9 said I think that this trade should have been done already. Everytime Perkins goes out there he looks like the kid from the movie little big league out there. scared on every pitch!!! Washburn is not my first choice but he can be a veteran influence who can at least throw strikes. I love how you guys throw these riduculous stats out there like they mean anything. Remember this, alot of trades are made in the prospect of a player turning things around in a new environment, or a new role. Will Washburn be a savior? Probly not, but he is a veteran who I think will feel very comfortable in Minnesota and possibly be that stopper that we so desperately need right now! I mean it would be pretty hard for him to be as bad as Perkins has been all season.
