Around SBN: Chan Sung Jung Wins Thriller Over Dustin Poirier

Over at his Strib blog, Neal walks us through some of the more popular names in trade speculation.

* The Twins have interest in Jays infielder Marco Scutaro, but for one reason or another it looks like his fate is tied to that of Roy Halladay.

* In regards to Freddy Sanchez, he agrees that he's probably the best option out there, but believes the Twins should would have to sign him to an extension to make a swap worth their while.

* The Twins are mostly interested in dealing with the A's right now, trying to kill two birds with one stone team. They're targeting, as reported before, Orlando Cabrera and Mike Wuertz.

With Slowey maybe out for the rest of the season

I don’t know if the Twins would have enough starting pitching to make an extra bat matter.

When I say matter I mean for this season

If the Twins want to make moves to fill holes for the next few years then they should do it. The heat of the lights and fans will only grow once they move into their new park that the fans are footing the bill for.

Len III has got it right

the Twins need to be planning for the future. they could still yet turn things around this season and win out the flawed central division. this series with the angels though truly shows where they are at as an organization. they just aren’t ready to compete with the big boys. anyways Cabrera would just be an attempt at a temporary patch. I admit he might be ok but we have very little middle infield depth right now in the organization and locking up someone like Sanchez for several years just makes too much sense. right now this situation the twins are in is starting to look a lot like the t wolves a couple years ago. all they need is a couple guys to compliment their supestars and they just won’t do it…

Gardenhire's major league career: Banjo hitting, futility infielder who couldn't lick it.
Rick Anderson's major league career: Strikethrower who never made it happen with his sub 90's fastball.

Other trade rumors of interest from mlbdailydisch.com

According to Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe, the Cleveland Indians rejected a trade that would have sent right-hander Clay Buchholz to the Indians in exchange for Victor Martinez. Furthermore, the Red Sox countered with a deal that consisted of Justin Masterson and Michael Bowden for Martinez, but the Indians turned that offer down as well.

•In addition to the Red Sox, the Indians are fielding offers from both the Giants and the Rays for Victor Martinez, but the Indians aren’t likely to deal Martinez unless the team’s best prospect is involved. Not really sure about this one, is Clay Buchholz not the Red Sox best prospect?

•Some other pitchers on the market besides Halladay are Scott Kazmir, Cliff Lee, Erik Bedard, Jarrod Washburn, and George Sherrill. Nothing too surprising there.

•Also the Orioles and Blue Jays might start fielding offers for Aubrey Huff and Kevin Millar.

•Cafardo proposes a swap of “underachieving” Scott Boras clients, saying the Red Sox and Tigers should swap Magglio Ordonez for J.D. Drew.

•Twins GM Bill Smith is looking is looking to add another reliever and a middle infielder before the deadline. Some names rumored are Freddy Sanchez, Orlando Cabrera and Christian Guzman. Cafardo says, with Target Field opening next year the Twins might be able to stretch their payroll a bit.
•The White Sox could be a team to pull of something big. Maybe even Roy Halladay.

Martinez for Buchholz

I’m not so sure I’d turn that one down if I were Cleveland. Maybe I’d hold out for Buchholz + a prospect. I wonder what the Indians are looking for.

Would it be so bad...

To do both trades? With the A’s and the Pirates, trading minor leaguers (I don’t want to get into who, or if it’s worth it) for Cabrera, Wuertz and Freddy

Pretty solid infield:
2B; Freddy Sanchez
SS: Orlando Cabrera
3B: Joe Crede (unless he is on the DL)

With Brendon Harris being able to play for whoever happens to be hurt that day? At least Punto won’t be playing

by DaTwins on Jul 26, 2009 4:00 PM EDT reply actions

That wouldn't be bad.

I like the idea, but it would be complicated for the front office to pull off.

by Jesse on Jul 26, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd love it

especially Sanchez. Send Casilla and Buscher down, Harris plays a lot of 3B when Crede sits. Punto moves back to his rightful spot as a backup infielder. My biggest concern would be the number of minor leaguers we’d have to give up.

Focus on Sanchez first.

what are you sending Oakland & Pittsburgh?

Cabrera & Sanchez would be an upgrade (ok, that’s an understatement).

What would it take to get them is the question.

From what I heard...

a poster said somewhere that on an As radio show, they were saying that they are talking Cabrera and a reliever for Luke Hughes and Kevin Mulvey. I think we still have plenty to acquire AT LEAST Sanchez, maybe Grabow too. I would offer Young, Casilla, and a young SP like Fox or Devries. I imagine that SHOULD be enough. Young does still have ALOT of potential, and other teams know that, but I think we need to pick a direction and go with it, and lately, it looks like Gomez would be that direction. Casillas top potential IMO is what he did for us last season, which was VERY good! Then they would also be getting a young pitcher to develop. Sound realistic to you guys?

by Bartzy on Jul 26, 2009 11:39 PM EDT reply actions

Makes sense to me

I’m not a big Cabrera fan, but he’s better than what we’ve got at 2B. I’d be willing to pull the trigger there, especially if M&M really want him. The problem is, Hughes and Mulvey is likely what Oakland already rejected.

I suspect if Pittsburgh was interested in Young-Casilla as a package, we’d already have Sanchez.

Again, given a choice I’d MUCH rather trade for Sanchez. Harris-Sanchez would probably be better than Cabrera-Harris, considering Harris is a bit rough at second.

Would be GREAT deals for the Twins

But why would the Pirates have interest in Casilla when his production has been going down consistently after the first two months of his career? He hasn’t done anything this year except for a walk-off two run single against the Mariners in the 2nd game of the season. I also think the fact that we are looking to trade Young before he has played 2 full seasons with us sends red flags to other teams as well, not to mention the fact that he still is not producing runs. So while I think your proposed deal with the Pirates would benefit the Twins, I am not sure why the Pirates would go for that.

By the way, I agree with you wholeheartedly that we need to decide who to go with in the outfield. I think Gomez ideally would continue his recent success at the plate and take over that third outfield spot.

The Pirates briefly employed Luis Rivas

I put nothing past them.

I’m also not too keen on punting on the Great Delmon Experiment already, but I also am not terribly confident about his future. I’d say “I trust Bill Smith’s judgment”, but I don’t, so I guess I’ll come down firmly in the “Hey, good thing I don’t have to make that decision!” camp.
