Source: Giants "Definitely getting Sanchez"
According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
In a similar Tweet, Jon Heyman (SI.com) believes John Bowker, Kevin Frandsen and Jesus Guzman are three of the names being discussed. Can we beat this?

No
That’s a pretty good haul for a wobbly kneed Sanchez. We’d have to give up Danny V to come close to this…no thanks.
crazy and strange...
via twitter: SI_JonHeyman little holdup in freddy sanchez trade to #sfgiants. pitts. post-gazette reports sanchez made pirates 3-year offer to stay.
I'm not sure I like this Twitter age of reporting
Even easier to screw things up. The winter meetings will also be exciting this year…
at least the errors get corrected quickly, too
and you only have to deal with 140 characters of speculative crap at a time :)
The Pirates rejected a $20M offer from Sanchez
$6.0M, $6.5M, $7.5M over the next three years, according to Kovacevic.
Duh.
Ummm, Freddy, the Pirates are looking to slash payroll. Is requesting a contract extension the right way to go?
He probably just realizes his knee is pretty bad so now he’s trying to get a deal done before it gets worse and people find out.
I don't know
Second basemen in their 30s tend to drop off precipitously for some reason. Maybe it’s all the hard slides.

True.
But if Luis Castillo can still walk at the point he’s at, I have confidence that Sanchez could last to 34. But that’s totally subjective.
Yeah, it's just a lot of risk
On the other hand, McCallum is the second baseman of the future and he’s in Elizabethton.

Interesting...
If the Twins can trade for him, they should see if this offer is still on the table.

all these rumors are making it difficult to do any work.
I can only imagine what Friday is going be like.

Probably depressing
after realizing the only acquisition we made was Mark Grudzielanek.
Assuming Snachez knee is too bad.
Is 3 prospects too much to give up for him? I don’t think so. None of the players mentioned are named in Baseball America’s top 10 Giant’s prospect. Not too mention, if it shows Mauer you are committed to winning with him in a Twins uniform. I just think we need to make a move and one that actually can make an impact. Also, how much more would we need to give up to get Grabow included in the deal?

But don’t forget, the Giants have the deepest system in the league. I guarantee at least 1, if not 2, of those players would be in the top 10 of Twins prospects.
Good point.
I guess I am saying I am ok with parting with a higher prospect if it shows Joe we are serious about winning now. If Sanchez was a rent-a-player, my feelings would be different. He just fills the infield need better than anyone and would be there to open up Target Field.

John Bowker
Age: 26
Pos: OF/1B
MLB Line: 358 AB’s, .246/.291/.394
MiLB Line: 2000 AB’s, .301/.364/.487
Generally mediocre power in the minors unless he was older than his competition: 23 in double-A in ‘07 and earlier this year at 25 in triple-A. No, he isn’t “old” for his level, but he’s not young, either. This could have been Garrett Jones a couple of years ago.
He's more or less Justin Huber
Frandsden is…tough to say. A no hit infielder, basically. I think I’d rather have Tolleson. Guzman has been hitting, but he’s also 25 and not established in the majors. He’s also been mostly in hitters leagues in the minors. Is he better than Luke Hughes? I guess I think he probably is, but not a ton better.

Kevin Frandsen
Age: 27
Pos: SS/2B
MLB Line: 397 AB’s, .242/.306/.343
MiLB Line: 1249 AB’s, .322/.384/.456
Blew out his achilles and missed all of 2008. Doesn’t walk much, but he doesn’t strike out a lot, either. Versatile defensive player, but has struggled at short. Could be a good doubles hitter, but would have to walk more to be a useful offensive player at the major league level.
See my above
I don’t see this as a tough offer to match/beat. Frandsen and Bowker are filler, Guzman isn’t a future all-star. It’s a depth trade.

Jesus Guzman
Age: 25
Pos: 1B/3B/OF
MLB Line: 13 AB’s, .154/.154/.154
MiLB Line: 2593 AB’s, .301/.369/.472
Played a lot of third and second base in the minors. Good hitter, but he’s always been old for his level.
My evaluation of these players: they provide depth, but little more. None of them project as players who will be anything more than stop-gap or short-term upgrades. If the Twins can’t top this package, I’m very sad.
Yep
I see we came to the same conclusion. Seems to me a Huber, Tolleson, Hughes deal is close to the equal of this. The Twins could easily do better. Add Manship to the deal? Slama? A high upsider like Morales? I’d do that.
