MARCO.... Scutaro!
Since the Twins are no longer involved in the Freddy Sanchez sweepstakes, it is time to look at other infield options. The twins have been rumored to be interested in the services of Orlando Cabrera, yet another name that keeps popping up is that of Toronto Blue Jay's infielder Marco Scutaro... Here is a link of an opinion piece from the Bleacherreport.com http://bleacherreport.com/articles/226998-twins-trade-targets-marco-scutaro. What say you? Is he a good fit with what the Twins need? Or would it be better to just go with what they have?

He's fine,
IF we give up very little. He’s Nick Punto, with a couple of extra doubles.
Look up the stats
Scutaro is no Nick Punto! He hits about 90 points higher in batting average and actually has a little home run and double power unlike Punto.
I agree!
i think Scutaro is perfect for what the twins front office is looking for (front office, not fans). If they don’t have to give up too much, they could potentially replenish the farm system with another 1st round pick, since he is classified as a type A free agent as of right now. Also, he is SUPER flexible and able to play short second and third decently. He has a MUCH bigger bat than Punto. I think he would be a nice batter in the two hole, and he is on a tear in July. He isn’t expensive. Also, the Jays are looking to unload some pitching, maybe we can package scutaro and some relief help, killing two birds with one stone!
And if we resigned him ...
… we’d have at least one infield spot covered for the next few years! I don’t think it’s going to happen, though. The Twins would never do something that impactful (is that a word?!) at the trading deadline.
Scutaro is Punto's upside
Punto has had a couple seasons as good as Scutaro, but he probably won’t again and you can’t depend on it.
Scutaro has a better approach
Scutaro’s much more consistent. When Punto’s on his game, he’s a pretty good player. He’s just so damned inconsistent because his approach lacks any fundamentals. I especially like Scutaro’s consistent plate discipline, whereas Punto’s comes and goes.
The thing I like about Scutaro over Sanchez is Scutaro can play both short and second. That gives the Twins more flexibility in filling two holes.

Indeed
The thing I like about Scutaro over Sanchez is Scutaro can play both short and second. That gives the Twins more flexibility in filling two holes.
This is even more useful if Grudzielanek pans out (he wouldn’t have been too useful if the Twins got Sanchez), and it also allows a bit more coverage for further Crede aches and pains.

Flexibility is a huge factor
Also another thing to consider is that scutaro is known for his ability to draw the walk. Think of the rbi potential for mauer and morneau…
Mix and match infield
An infield of Crede, Harris, Scutaro, Punto and Grudzielanek allows quite a bit of mixing and matching.

Marco is a type A free agent
With the season he’s having there would be definite interest as well, so we wouldn’t have to worry about a situation where no one wants him because of his tag. Link
This is a good and bad thing. Two picks good. However Toronto knows that too and would want more for him because of that.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
One other note, quite a bit off topic
I noticed by the rankings linked to above that Erik Bedard is only a type B probably because of the starts he missed last yea to injury. He might be a nice way for the Twins to spend there new stadium money along with a nice bonus for Joe Mauer. It’ll be interesting to see the kind of money a guy like Bedard brings next year. I’m thinking A.J. Burnett type money? Could be affordable since our starting staff is still on the cheap for a few years. We’ll have Crede off the books for a league minimum guy. Gomez and Span are still cheap and still will be. If the team really wants to show Mauer and Morneau they care this could be step in that direction. It would also free the Twins up to trade some pitching (both current rotation and prospects) for a middle infielder who would be young and affordable ($ wise not prospect wise).
It’s just something to think about.

Toronto wants to keep Scutaro

I don't get that
Why does it matter? Either way, they’re not playoff bound.

retool in the offseason with the good pieces you have left.
Scutaro might be the best they have at second, or SS. If Halladay is on board they have a shot at contending. If you have a shot at contending why trade away a proven major league starter for prospects?

Yeah, but Scutaro is a free agent after this year

I read somewhere they wanted him back next season
Like I said above he is a type A free agent as of now. If they got the equivalent of two first round picks for him now it would likely be more than our Twins would give up anyhow. If they let him go to another team and then resign him in the off season they lose their first round pick. I can honestly understand their logic in that regards.
I still hope the Twins could get him but it doesn’t seem likely now.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
So Parmelee and Waldrop should get it done
Just picking two late first rounders out of a hat. Or, Moses and Fox. Or, Rainville and Hunt.

yah
but unfortunately the potential of future first rounders is worth more than first rounders who haven’t quite got it done yet. The hope of finding a guy like Hicks in the second half of the first round, or Garza, or Slowey, etc.

Ladendorf
He’s a first-round talent.

Are you kidding?
He’s the 30th ranked prospect according to this web page. That means there’s 90% odds he never makes the majors.
His stock has risen considerably this year
He’s now in my top 15. Plus, I wouldn’t read too much into our rankings. They are very fluid and don’t mean a lot in terms of the probability of making the majors.

Ladendorf or McCollum?
I’d rather have McCollum which makes Ladendorf NOT a 1st round talent.
I'd rather have Ladendorf
He can play shortstop. That’s why he was a second rounder out of junior college last year and McCallum was a fourth rounder out of the Big Ten this year.
