Off Day Poll: The Next Perennial Twins All-Star

You could have predicted it pretty easily, even before the season began: this year's Twins representatives in the All-Star game are Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, and Joe Nathan. It's Mauer's third and Morneau's third selection, it's Nathan's fourth, and it's the exact same slate of Twins that were in the game last season.

Among the rest of the Twins roster, though, only Francisco Liriano, during his star-crossed 2006 season, has made the Midsummer Classic.  So, here's the poll question of the day: if you had to predict one current Twin to become a yearly part of the game, like Mauer, Morneau, and Nathan - who would you pick?

Does it make me too much of a pessimistic jerk

if I voted “other” but really meant is as “none of the above”?

I too am a pessimistic jerk

b/c my other vote was really a none of the above vote.

It doesn't make you a pessimistic jerk.

Just unable to correctly follow the rules. :-)

Me too...

I voted for other too and was too lazy to follow the rules (now that I’ve voted, I think the rules are gone).

Perennial all-star is setting the bar pretty darn high. Having three of them at once is quite a feat.

Span is the man.

I think of hitters on the team, Span is the next most important after Mauer and Morneau. The team struggled a little bit while he was out.

SPAN = MAN

Slowey

Slowey has the best shot at becoming the next Twins all – star. Span is an outfielder and he cannot compete with the “big” AL boy outfielders: Ichiro, Jones, etc…

Slowey already has 10 wins this year and if not for his injuries which have resulted in the last poor starts, he would probably be the first 12 game winner in the major leagues with a sub 4 ERA. Slowey is going to have a lot of success and I think he should leadoff the series against Boston next year. He is the long term ace of this staff….Blackburn wont be able to sustain his numbers.

None of the above

Sorry, but you’re asking for guys like Killebrew, Oliva, Carew, Puckett, Knoblauch, Aguilera, Mauer, Morneau and Nathan. Those guys just don’t come around very often. Hrbek made it once, and his likeness is hanging on a banner.

+1

You need to be a great player to make the All-Star game, and you need to have an all-star face and a publicity push. All-Star roster are made by Sportscenter producers.

For example, we watch Denard Span every day, and he’s been fantastic. But he doesn’t get Karl Ravech messaging his highlights and John krukking about his value and Rome is Dumbing shouting about his greatness.

Think how great Morneau is, and how great his season has been, and he loses the starting spot to a “hustle-and-love” Youkilis, who was injured for a long time and whose batting average after April isn’t really all that awesome.

Furthermorely, the All-Star game is a hot chick with a bad laugh.

All Stars are made in Blogosphere right?

Besides as loing as Joe, Justin and Nathan are around, there won’t be room to promote Span, Blackburn or Young or any of the other players. Not enough computers in Twinkie land to vote enough to get more than three players on the All-Star roster. So who cares? We got the team players, not the glory hogs. Justin is talking about skipping the home run derby. More worried about some rest for the second half…that’s team ball.

I have a hard time

seeing any of these guys as perennial All-Stars, too. I think some of them will make at least one. Blackburn might never have a better shot than he does right now. Liriano’s made one already, Baker could make one or two, and if Gomez reaches his ceiling he could make it on defensive reputation. I do have a hard time seeing guys like Span or Cuddyer make it though, simply because there are so many more talented corner outfielders in Cuddyer’s case and Span’s great OBP won’t make anyone vote for him outside of MN. I’d like to be wrong, though.

I hope Slowey can come back healthy and pitch the way he’s capable of.

It'll be Span

He is just starting his career as a lifetime lead off guy. Soon he will be known as one of the best. A Playoff run would speed up his cause greatly.

I have a hard time with the word perennial

Not just spelling it either. I’m more concerned with any of these guys being perennial all stars. All Stars once or twice, yes I could see a lot of them having a good shot at it. Span #1 so I voted for him. However that is a tough position to make it in. Besides that I’d say one of the starters. They’ve all shown they’re capable of putting together some good starts. Now it’s just to get some recognition. Likely Slowey/Baker/Liriano have the best shot of the pitchers as they can get some “sexy” strikeout numbers that people love.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

by halfchest on Jul 6, 2009 7:54 PM EDT reply actions

I could see

Revere, or maybe Hicks down the road. If Ramos got enough playing time, maybe. There’s a couple of hitters tearing up E-Town right now (Rams and Ladendorf) who could become All Stars a time or two if they continue to progress. Gutierrez, Gibson, maybe even Tootles could get there regularly if they fulfill potential. But all that is a long ways away.

I could see Span once or twice over the course of his career. Same with Valencia. But nobody on that list is a perennial all-star.

But IF you had to pick one...

Who would it be? Who has the best chance of being a perennial selection to the All-Star Game?

I don’t suppose any of the choices have anything but long odds. But if you had to pick one…

OK, if you're going to PUSH me....

….I’ll say Liriano.

I'm with

I’m with both of cmaths post here, almost exactly. Nobody on that list bit Liriano has any hope of being a PERENNIAL all-star. some of the very young guys down the horizon are the only ones with that sort of upside still around, but obviously,it’s a looooooong way to go.

liriano, he’s got a SHOT. He seems so so close to really putting it together.

I am suprised

Baker did not get more votes. Its a tough question, though and a difficult one to choose. I think despite his difficult start, Baker is the most dominating guy we have in the rotation, that is why I voted for him. He has flirted with no hitters too often for me to think he is average. Span would be my second choice. He came just at the right time to make losing Hunter stink a little less.

If Ozzie Guillen likes Punto that much, I vote we send him down to Chicago. Punto and Guillen deserve each other.

by FoulJack on Jul 6, 2009 11:34 PM EDT reply actions

good point

You don’t have so many games go 4 5 or 6 innings of no hit ball without there being a reason for it. Hopefully it was just a result of his late start with the injury and everything. I can see your point that he might have the best shot of all these guys.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

by halfchest on Jul 7, 2009 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Tough to see anyone else...

…on the current roster. Maybe one of the pitchers.

Looking at the minor leagues, Wilson Ramos could be the man beginning a few years out, but he will likely be affected by a kid names Mauer and will be looking to get at bats at catcher and DH. So my vote will go for Rene Tosoni who really could develop into that type of player. The way the Twins have pushed this young man confirms that they believe he is special as well.

by roger13 on Jul 7, 2009 7:22 AM EDT reply actions

I really like Span

but he plays in the Outfield and i don’t see him cracking the AL Allstar lineup in the outfield any time soon. Liriano and Baker have the best pitching stuff and thus the best chance there, but for the hitters? if Young and Gomex can reach their potential then perenial Allstar has always been their ceiling. At this point they probably can’t reach it, but that is their ceiling. no one else on the current roster has that

Span's shot

Span needs to get off to a ridiculously hot start, fueled by batting average (has to be in the league top 10), make a few highlight catches, and steal more bases than he has so far this year, and he has an outside shot at being a reserve (he’ll probably need some ridiculous postseason heroics to get enough name recognition to even sniff the top 10 in voting). He also would have a good chance to go if Nathan, Mauer, and Morneau were all injured and the Twins needed a rep, but I would rather that not be what gets him there.

I think Baker has the next best shot of current active Twins to appear in an all-star game, but I don’t see him as a perennial type of guy – he strikes me as more of a Radke type, solid but not one who gets many all-star nods.

It would probably be a pitcher

I don’t think Span has “it” to be a perennial all-star. As a matter of fact, I’m not yet convinced that Span will be who we think he is for the next 8 years.

I would take Young over Gomez in the poll. Just because Young has a better chance to put up all-star numbers offensively. If Gomez could steal 80 bases that would put him on the national radar.

If one of the pitchers would put up a 20+ win season and get top 3 in Cy Young voting, that would give him a name and then some good half seasons leading up to the break could get them in, perennially. Perkins, no. But the other four, why not.

by ajmargarine on Jul 7, 2009 10:07 AM EDT reply actions

Gomez stealing 80 bases

would require him getting on base at least 80 times…well, I guess 40 if he steals second and third…

by Adam Peterson on Jul 7, 2009 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Not so hard

Last year, he got on base 174 times (149 hits, 24 BBs).
This year, in severely limited playing time, he is on a pace to get on base 84 times.

Yes I realize that’s a joke.

Kubel

Okay, so he’s a long shot, and his position is hopelessly loaded with talent — but he doesn’t even make the ballot?

Oh well, I suppose his window has mostly closed. Even .300 with 30 HRs wouldn’t make him an all-star as a DH/OF. But isn’t he at least up there with Cuddyer? And doesn’t he have as as good a shot at a .340/40 year as anyone on the team besides M&M?

by by jiminy on Jul 7, 2009 10:11 AM EDT reply actions

Who in the Hell voted for Cuddyer?

Seriously I wanna know.

I understand the poll is just for fun, as no one else on that list is going to be a “perrenial” all-star. The real question is who else has a shot at making an all-star appearance or two… but Cuddyer? The fact that he is even on the list is a total WTF!?
