RIP 2009?
It seems like every year there is a point in the season when I think the Twins are dead in the water and maybe I need to lower my expectations on them. Well here we are again, except this year I don’t think I’ll be proved wrong.
I’ve seen the players look frustrated on the field before but after the 1st inning of Tuesday’s game they looked defeated. After all they were playing the ROYALS! And here they were down 6 runs in the first, at home. I just remember thinking that the players looked like they didn’t want to be there after that. Sad thing is they played the rest of that game that way. It’s almost like the one game they won was in spite of themselves. Add yesterday’s outcome and losing the series to the ROYALS at home and well I think this season is done.
The Twins have lost 2 of the last 3 series to the bottom of the division. If they can’t beat these teams how are they supposed to beat the top two teams in the division? The simple answer is they can’t. This team has not shown the ability to win consistently enough to pass Chicago and Detroit which would have been hard even if they were playing well.
So what now? I’m a Twins fan, so I’ll still be tuning in and following the team but all I’m hoping for is that they can get above .500 for the season. I’m going to be rooting for them to hold off the Indians and ROYALS, pretty sad huh? I think the front office needs to change their goals as well. I love me some Red Dawg but please bring up Morales. Release Buscher and bring up Valencia if the organization really thinks he could be the starting 3B in 2010. He still would need to play in a platoon with Crede so he could be protected somewhat. I’d like to see Slama up with the Twins to see what he has.
Oh and one more thing, I’d like to see LNP – The Rally Slayer never play again this season! Is this unfair? Maybe but I think he has FAIL bunted his way out of a job. People here have pointed out that his defense is no longer good enough that he can lean on that so as I pointed out in the game thread, if defense wasn’t enough to keep Dougie baseball on the club then it shouldn’t be enough to keep this AAA player on the field. If Gardy needs to keep his secret love child on the bench fine but LNP should be a pinch runner for the Twins at this point. Oh and he should be 2nd in the depth chart of pinch runners in games that GO GO didn’t start. As for the 4 million he is owed, well someone posted that Mike Lamb is still being paid by the Twins so Bill Smith, close your eyes, pinch your nose, and swallow this ridiculous contract too. Ok, I feel better now…
So I’ll pour one out for my 2009 Minnesota Twins and dream about better results in 2010.

I'll be here until the end no matter what...
I’m off to the beach next week, but after that I generally keep following each day… even if we were to be eliminated. I’m not much of a football fan.

Agree with you
I’m not much of a fan of football myself. Baseball by far is my favorite sport. I’ll still watch as many games as I can. It’s why I purchase Extra Innings every year but I’m just not going to be worrying over how each win or loss effects the standings.
The offseason feels so long to me that I can’t help but enjoy baseball while I can.
By the way I would be very happy to eat a HUGE slice of humble pie if the Twins have a run like the Rockies did and by some miracle make the playoffs. I just don’t see a run like that in them. Too bad b/c no matter what I’m a Twins fan.
Go Twins!

Luckily there are those of us (like me)
who are pathetic enough to view baseball as a 12-month sport. Viva blogs!

Yep
I like my football, but mostly of the college variety. Heck, as a Vikings fan I was so out of it for a while I thought we actually had signed Favre. Was depressed for a week simply because I saw all the Favre jerseys at the Dome, watching a Twins game…

Negativity abounds
On Twinkie Town now, you’re not alone. A lot of other Twins fans have turned their Homer Hankies into surrender flags too.
This isn’t the 2006 team, but we were down by 8.5 games then, and we still took the division. So I’m not giving up so easily. I don’t care about people who say “It can’t be done,” I’ll be here ’til the end!
GO TWINS!

Notice in my post above I was careful with my wording...
No giving up here. Just mentioning that I’ll be hear no matter what. The boards I was following in 2005 and 2007 went all silent the last 2-3 weeks of those years.
Its a bit different from 2006 though. The WC race was quite a bit tighter that year. We were within 2 G there.

My comment wasn't directed at you
Or anyone else specifically. As far as 2006 goes, as of 8/14/2006 we were 8.5 games back and in 3rd place. Before someone says it, I know this isn’t the 2006 team. I’m just saying I still believe!

wow!
I guess the memory really is the first to go b/c I don’t remember that.
That should give us hope…
Maybe M&M will have this huge motivational speech and fire up the club? The problem is the pitching though. How do they motivate Blackie and the rest? Maybe Pavano can give them the “if we turn this around and somehow still make the playoffs, you can get Mo Money, Mo Money, and then suck” speech.
I’m feeling more hopfully… maybe the Twins will do us the favor of beating the Indians tonight to add to it.
Win Twins!

The Lou Brown method of motivation
Remember in “Major League”, when as a motivational tool, they used a life-size cardboard cutout of the owner, and removed a section of her clothing for every win? Well, maybe Gardy needs a life-size cardboard cutout of Carl Pohlad… completely nude. “Every time you guys win, we put a section back on.”

Help I've been struck blind!
really man, that is some sick #%!^ you just threw out there…
I think in respect to Carl’s kids I’d like to offer that they do that with a cardboard cut out of BERT! You know he would pose for it too.
By the way I love Major League references… I think this is a 1st for this reference though

Oh...
If it makes anyone feel better, I completely spaced out the fact that Carl Pohlad was dead. You can feel free to replace the horrific visual with one of his children, if you’d like.

Down by 8.5 games
wasn’t that going into the All Star break though?
Like I said, I would love to be wrong. Hell, I would go coo coo for coco puffs if they were still close to first at the end of September (w/in 3 games) but I have never seen a recent Twins team look like they did Tuesday night.
Like everyone here, I love me some Twins baseball so I’ll be here everyday hoping. It costs nothing to hope. And how great would it be if somehow, someway the Twins pulled it off.

It was all about the WC race that year...
No one thought we had a chance to pass the Tigers…
Yes, we were 8.5 back of the Tigers on Aug 15th
http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIN/2006-schedule-scores.shtml
But at 20 games over .500 we were just 2 games back in the Wild Card. We took the WC lead for good relatively early in September. I think it was the 3rd. The White and Red Sox then both completely tanked to make the WC race a bit of a joke.
Passing the Tigers was just icing on the cake… the playoff berth had been secured for a while.
by DavidRF on Aug 14, 2009 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
There's a key stat there
We were 20 games OVER .500, meaning we had a really good team. Now, we are 4 games BELOW .500, meaning we are a below-average team.
by Sheldon on Aug 14, 2009 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yup,
and to be honest, it wouldn’t be nearly as much fun for me if we made it to the playoffs with like 84 wins, knowing we’d most likely get killed in the 1st round. Sure, the ‘06 Cards won the WS with an 83-win season, but that’s really rare.

8.5 games down
Were we 4 games below .500 at that point? I remember us being above .500 when we started making the run.

LNP the Rally Slayer
That really has a nice ring to it.
I agree, it seems this year’s team doesn’t have the heart to win well…much of anything. I am a Twins fan, thus, I always hold out hope for some ridiculous comeback, but this year does look a little bleak.
The break between the end of baseball and the start of baseball is a long, boring one, so no matter what, I’ll be watching until the end. I think we’re called masochists. :)

just like Tuesday night
it’s all about sharing the pain with good company…
by caluofmn on Aug 14, 2009 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
this is why LNP is so bad
He thinks that more pain for fans means better company, so he’s trying to build the Twins community by sucking so much

We are still in it
There’s still plenty of time to make up 5 games. I think it’s just easy to get down on the team because of the current slump, but just because we’re in a slump now doesn’t mean we’ll stay in a slump.
I’ll keep watching until the season is done. If we do get eliminated, it’ll still be fun to see how some of our prospects do at the major league level. And it’s always fun to rag on LNP or Akeppocalypse NOW or the like when we aren’t doing well

as the number of posts on Tuesday's game shows
there is comedy gold to be found when the team we root for is busy sucking @$$.
some of the nicknames that night were so good they should be on the players jerseys…

I would LOVE to see Bobby Keppel walking around with
AKeppelypse NOW on the back of his jersey. That would seriously make my life. Or Jesse Crain with “Crainwreck” on his.

Maybe it's just me
But it seems like we have been in a season-long slump.
by Sheldon on Aug 14, 2009 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Expected win/loss
Based on our runs scored (566) vs runs allowed (560), we have an expected record of 58-56. 2 games over .500 isn’t very good, and I’m not saying we’re playing very good. But the Tigers also have an expected record of 58-56, and the White Sox are 58-57, so I think there’s still hope.
In any case, on the season, we are playing a lot better than recently (3 won of our last 12). But I can see how you feel, we’ve never managed to break away from being a ~ .500 team this season. I don’t know if that counts as a slump, but I’m going to try to stay positive and not call it a slump :)

That is why this season has been so hard to take
The Twins are finally scoring plenty of runs. The other top teams in the division are just as flawed and yet the Twins are under 500.
If the Twins could just put it all together for a month, the division might be theirs but can they do it? It’s almost the middle of August. It’s hard to believe that at this point they will suddenly put it all together.
But one can hope. WIN TWINS!
by caluofmn on Aug 14, 2009 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think the longest win streak this season is about 4 games
that is not going to do it when you have 2 teams ahead of you. It would take a collapse like the Mets (maybe greater) for the Twins to stumble into the playoffs.
That is of course assuming that the Twins can’t catch fire. So far this season though, there has barely been smoke much less fire.

Be careful what you wish for...
For all the complaining about Punto and how he should be benched for eternity, I would like to remind you of two things:

Those are the second base options if Nick Punto doesn’t play. They are probably better bunters, but otherwise, they make Punto look like some combination of Ryne Sandberg and Paul Bunyan.

I think it is pretty safe to remove the ? at this point
No way the Twins turn this around, might as well go full speed into the iceberg and sink this ship.

I think hoping they don’t end up in 4th or 5th is the goal now, and let’s be honest, that’s just sad.
by fischean on Aug 18, 2009 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That really should be the goal.
Like you pointed out last night, the Twins are closer to Cleveland than they are to Detroit.
I hope the Twins realize how close they are to actually falling to 4th place.
They gotta show some pride and play better so that doesn’t happen. At least I hope they do.
by caluofmn on Aug 18, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
it is a shame that not falling to 4th is what this season has come to
and I can only hope the nonchalant attitude they seem to have changes soon.

you'd think that playing with Mauer would inspire them
no really…
you’d think watching him bat would be a good thing. Even Hunter said he learned something watching Joe.
The big problem is the pitching. There is no Baby Joe Jebus in the rotation for the arms to look up to. That’s why I hope they spend some money on a number 1, I doubt they will get an ace but a solid number 1 would be nice.
by caluofmn on Aug 18, 2009 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hopefully in the rotation, Pavano can give them a little veteran help
but otherwise, I just think they need to overhaul and start from the ground up. Who gets to stay? Who’s out? And can Joe Mauer pitch as well?
Mauer’s an incredible player, that’s definitely no secret. I’m glad that we get to watch him as a Twin for at least the next year. Hopefully more :)
by fischean on Aug 18, 2009 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
We all hope for more than one more year for Mauer
I hope this year doesn’t spook him into wanting out of MN.
I’d like to think that Pavano can provide some of that vet grit, I have no idea if he is the kind of guy that is interested in taking players under his wing though. It’s not like he has had a great recent track record.
I think only Baker and Slowey should have a sure place in the rotation. Everyone else has to be looked at.
Can you imagine if Mauer could pitch?
I don’t know if you heard but Ichiro has said in a few years he’d like to become a pitcher and some people actually think he could do it.
