Twins Sign First-Round Pick Kyle Gibson
From MLBtraderumors.com, Joe C's Twitter and Jim Callis of Baseball America. Thank God we got this out of the way.
From Joe C:
The Twins signed 22nd overall pick Kyle Gibson for $1.8MM, according to Jim Callis of Baseball America. Slot for the position: $1.287MM. Gibson's stock dropped a bit before the draft after he suffered a stress fracture in his throwing arm.
It seems to be fair money for a guy who would have been a top-10 or top-15 pick, had he not injured himself.

Haha
La Velle E Neal made the same joke at his blog, said he read the press release very carefully to make sure it didn’t include the words “and will start for the Twins against Texas on Thursday.” Glad they got this done, a fair enough compromise.

Well......
The good news is that Phillip Humber also returns to the majors!
Visit www.TwinsCards.com and check out "rosters" to see my collection!
When does Humber pitch?
I’ll watch something else that night
Wowza
Baseball America’s Aaron Fitt says Stephen Strasburg signed with the Nats for $15.67MM over four years.
Wow, Nats got him for a lot les than expected

isn't it crazy though
to pay over 15 million for a player who has never thrown a single pitch in the MLB?
Not as crazy as the fact that
Joe Muaer got paid $400,000 in 2006, or Mark Prior made about a million bucks in 2003, or Johan Santana made $1.5 million or so when he was the best pitcher in the league in 2004.
This is the one time when a player actually has a chance to negotiate unless and until they get to free agency.

Exactly. Look how things turned out.
The Cubs got a pretty damn good pitcher. Let’s say he didn’t get the big bonus. The Cubs wrung him dry; he got them nearly to the WS in 2003, and NEVER got the big major league payday. He didn’t get to free agency, at least not with him arm still attached.
The system is rigged to underpay players for 6 years in the majors. For many players, that’s all they get. The draft is the one time they have a little bit of leverage.

I think it’s pretty fair right now.
Strassborg is the best prospect I’ve ever seen. Think of what the Red Sox paid to get Dice-K, who was no where near what this guy has. Tha Nats get him for 15% what the Sox had to pay for Dice-K. Have you seen the film? He throws over 100 with explosive late movement and the best curveball I’ve ever seen. This guy can step right into the majors and be one of the best pitchers in baseball.

sounds like he might actually be worth it
but 15 million is still alot of money to a civilian like me.
Yeah, it's stupid
The Twins paid half a mil more than they should have for this kid.
Baseball could lose the two-sport stars if they capped signing ching for athletes who have a better chance of washing out in baseball than making it, but I would favor MLB taking its chances. For the baseball/football stars, baseball would win out for any smart boy, as the NFL guarantees few contracts and your life expectancy in the NFL is remarkably brief.

The Nats have an awesome group of young pitchers.
If they can’t become a winner in 2-3 years with that core, something is really wrong.

Imagine if they had signed Crow
They have the #1 pick next year too
Good
and I’m glad 1.8 Million was plenty enough for him, as it should be…

He instantly becomes a top-five prospect.
Great news for this organization. He will probably start 2010 either with For Myers or New Britain and could be a Twin in late 2010.

Too high
The Twins have never started a draftee in New Britian. Beloit is more likely with a quick promotion to Ft. Myers possible. Matt Garza started in Betsy then moved to Beloit after being drafted. He blew through A+, AA and AAA the next year. The Twins organization is much more likely to start lower than necessary and promote quickly. They like ensuring prospects encounter success.
Hopefully he gets to taste
SOme of single A Beloit this year
so he is ready for A+ Ft. Myers immediately in 2010
and can be with us pretty quickly in 2011 …. But I don’t see him helping us out at the Major league level next year no.
Sorry I don’t see it
Maybe just maybe a Septmeber Call-up but even thats pretty steep.

He could go the Gut route
Get his arm in shape at Instructs and pitch in a few games this year in A+. Next year he should start at A+ (as Gut did) and make his way to AAA, if all goes according to plan.

Instantly my top prospect in the system

No, I'm very high on Gibson. He's the best pitching prospect we've had since Santana, IMO

I'm elated...
…a bit of good news after a downer of a weekend.
Nabbing this kind of talent for this price is great. If he’s healthy I can see him in the rotation by 2011.
Top Prospect
I hope so! But Shooter Hunt was in the Top of the prospects list too.
That turned out to be a stinker.
Signings
I can’t find it anywhere. Did the Twins end up signing most of their top picks?
And did any clubs fail to sign their #1 picks?
The Twins signed their top 10 picks
And 23 of the 51 draft choices overall. That’s in line with past years, except they failed to sign a few top draft choices in the past. Most notably, Jason Veritek, Travis Lee and Aaron Heilman.

any doctors in the house?
does anyone know if the stress fracture in his throwing arm makes him more likely to experience a 2nd break due to the stress of pitching.
1. I’d hate to see the Twins lose a pitching prospect when they need pitching
2. I don’t want to see a Dave Dravecky moment at Target field
really?
That is the area I wish to enter into. From where did you graduate with that degree?
"Don't take life for granted, because tomorrow isn't promised to any of us." - Kirby Puckett
I don't know if helps with my question
but it does a world of good for society in general. Thank you for devoting the time, energy, and money needed to be a doctor in history.
It doesn't help
but that’s because you didn’t answer the question. I’m no doctor, but I’ll go out on a limb and say “yes, people who have one break are probably statistically more likely to have a second break, then players are to have a first break”.
Maybe that helps. Info from someone who actually knows, would of course, help more :)
my question is coming from the public back and forth between the Twins and Gibson
and the fact that it is normal for these players to get what sounds like alot of money even though they’ve never pitched a single game of professional baseball.
b/c his injury sounds like one that could make a team question whether he will even make it to the bigs and if so, for how long?
bones != joints
My understanding is that joints are far more vulnerable than bones, so the forearm fracture is less of an issue. Your bones can stand up to a lot more abuse than the soft tissue (cartelige, tendons, ligaments) of your joints can.
formerly known in these parts as adamb
Probably stronger at the site of the break...
…if you recall from 4th grade health, broken bones that heal properly can be stronger at the site of the injury than they were before.
I don’t think anyone wants to see a Dravecky moment. He had cancer.
