Liriano's Grievance
Royals fan here. We just sent Gordon to the minors because of service time and to get an extra year of gordon. Does anyone on here know what the outcome of Liriano's grievance against the Twins was? Did he receive any sort of monetary compensation or additional service time? I googled it and couldn't find any articles published on the matter since last September. Thus, I decided to try coming straight to some folks who might have some knowledge of the situation.

I haven't heard anything
Admittedly, I’m a bit out of the loop (I’m not a Twin Cities resident, so I don’t read the local papers), but I have heard nothing since it was originally brought up – I don’t even know with certainty if the grievance was actually filed.

That is the great thing about the Internet...
…you no longer have to live somewhere to keep up on the local news.
Bloggin' the bloggers since 1938.

Yes, but...
I don’t care about the Twin Cities’ local news. I just care about the Twins and Vikes, and I generally figure that the odds are pretty low that something important would happen and the blogs would miss it but I’d manage to catch it by adding yet another media outlet to my already-too-crowded daily browsing.

AFAIK IIRC
He never ended up filing a grievance vs MN. They looked into filing one. They investigated the matter. They cried and barked about it and threatened it. But never filed one. (I think)
All the talk of a grievance happened around July 18. Liriano made a start for the Twins on Aug 3, so he was called up a few weeks after the talk started.
He didn’t really have a case anyway. By most accounts he would have missed being a Super Two in any defensible logical time frame the Twins would have considered calling him up.

Now........
What kind of an arbitration salary would you give a guy who is 5-12 with a near 6.00 ERA and shuts himself down because of arm fatigure.
Between Liriano and Pekins, this winter’s arbitration looks interesting.

Well
whatever arbitration pay would be, it would be greater than the forced pay of serfdom. Liriano’s not gonna get huge dollars but he should get a nice pay bump. He’s 24-21 career, 4.11 ERA and has already been an all-star.

Arbitration only makes guys money when they're good
Playing poorly in the serf years only drives down the price during the arbitration years. I don’t see how gaining a few days of service time changes his expected arbitration payout.

To an extent, I guess
If you’re referring to Gordon, I don’t think they’re sending him down to decrease his arbitration payout, but to buy an extra year before he hits free agency. Anyway, though, arbitration figures will still be more than serfdom – you don’t often see a guy get much less than 800k in his first year of arbitration.

Nobody cares if you pay a good player $1 million a year
It’s the Howard and Soriano arbitration contracts that you worry about.
But I get your point about free agency. Still, if I were a Royals fan, I wouldn’t be pleased. This time of year if your out of the race, you want to see the future stars developing at the majors. I wonder how moves like this affect attendance and fan loyalty.
It’s like I said to my old boss: Every time you cut the budget, you reduce our ability to get revenue. Sure enough, he laid me off and the company went under. But that’s another story.
