September call-ups
How many is too much!
If you call them up, do they play or just sit on the bench?
Pitching. The Twins have Gabino as the sole survivor 40-man hand who hasn't come to the majors. One would hope they call him up, just to get a decent look at the fellow. Now, the problems. R.A. Dickey. Horrible in his first couple of bouts with the Red Wings. Does he derserve a come-back, or a long winter of job searching? Do you look at Sean Henn (a lefty) again? Is it time to promote Delaney and Slama, or will the Twins pull the wait-and-see you in spring training. Juan Morillo, I see, getting a call...just because he can walk if the Twins don't see a use for him in 2010, and if he can't produce NOW, he won't be 40-manned during the winter.
Catching. Jose Morales is a given. Do you bring up WIlson Ramos to give him a bite. How about Drew Butera. Do you give him the token Ryan Jorgenson two at-bats as a tribute to dad, Sal. I doubt Drew will be back in 2010 as Jeff Christy can fill his role at AAA. With the amount of warming up going on in the pen, maybe the Twins need 2-3 extra catchers out there.
Outfield. Jason Pridie. For someone the Twins Rule 5ived, and had high hopes of being a main backup after the trade with Tampa Bay, does he fit long range? Do the Twins add Dustin Martin instead? Do they dip further and look at Brandon Roberts or Rene Tosoni? Do they actually need a sixth outfielder on any roster?
Infield. Ah, the questions. Bring back Buscher (for what) and/or Valencia. You need to look at Valencia, hard, if you won't re-sign Crede. Then you could still decide about Buscher during the offseason. Matt Tolbert returns? And do you give him AND Steve Tolleson a chance to come off the bench. Trevor Plouffe. Does he need to see major league pitching for 10 at-bats, get the desire to make the Show, and work harder, yet again, in his upcoming third season of AAA ball in 2010? Where does Luke Hughes fit into the picture? I'll be disappointd if the Twins bring up Tolbert and Buscher and no one else. I would rather see them NOT bring up that pair and concentrate on people who MIGHT contribute in 2010. I would like to see Brock Peterson get some bench shots, but not at the expense of removing anyone from the 40-man, unless the Twins would truly part ways with Buscher, Tolbert or Hughes now.
So September. Twins add two pitchers, one catcher, one outfielder, and probably only two infielders. Six guys...which can be a lot. Why not add 10, though. Yes, more major league salary, more rooms on the road, more meal money spent. But, hey, think about 2010, too. And 2010 shouldn't include names like Buscher, Tolbert, Pridie, Dickey, Butera, Hughes...who will join Keppel as 40-man fodder, as well as free agents Crede, Redmond, Cabrera and Pavano as former Twins.

I’m basically with you. I’d like to see Gabino and Morillo get the call up. Morales is a must basically. I could see Pridie getting the call as an OF just because Gardy could use him as a pinch runner (which he loves to have).
I hope to never see Tolbert or Buscher in a Twins uniform again, but it wouldn’t surprise me if we saw them over any of the younger guys, especially if we are still in it.

40-man
In past years, they have been reluctant to add players to the 40-man just to call them up in September. So I would expect the majority of the five or six players they call up will already be on the 40 man. The only one I would like them to add is Morillo, considering that I hope they add him in the offseason anyway. Of the players on the 40-man, Gabino, Mulvey and Morales seem like obvious choices. Unless they have some sort of miraculous comeback this year, I see no reason to bring Delaney or Slama up if it means adding them to the 40-man prematurely.

Ah, yes......
Forgot Mulvey. Only see him being added if the starting rotation remains in shambles and the Twins are no longer comfortable starting two from the mix of Swarzak, Manship, Duensing, Humber and Perkins.
I figure Humber will remain on the 40-man and possibly open 2010 as the 12th pitcher, like he did this year…unless he becomes suddenly tradeable.

No one not on the 40-man
That would preclude Morillo and Henn. I would expect Gabino and Mulvey to be promoted and Humber is here already. I imagine Tolbert and Buscher will return. I suppose they will recall Pridie although I don’t think he’ll remain in the Twins’ organization after this year. Morales will return and I have to believe that Valencia will get his first taste of the majors this September.
Regarding Henn and Morillo—the Twins need to keep both of those guys. Morillo throws hard and has had pretty good success at Rochester. Henn went on the DL almost immediately after he was sent down, but his numbers at Rochester have been sparkling and he is pitching well now.

Henn and Morillo aren't that great
I wouldn’t waste 40 man roster slots on unproven platoon relievers. There should be a dozen Sean Henn’s freely available this offseason.
Joe Beimel (32)
Alan Embree (40)
Scott Eyre (38)
Casey Fossum (32)
John Grabow (31)
Eddie Guardado (39)
Ron Mahay (39)
Trever Miller (37)
Darren Oliver (39)
Glendon Rusch (35)
Scott Schoeneweis (36)
Brian Shouse (41)
Ron Villone (40)
Jamie Walker (38)

I agree on Henn, not Morillo
It’s hard to find guys who throw 99. He’s harnessing that stuff and should help next year. If he’s not added, he’ll get drafted in the Rule 5.

Sure he'll be drafted
Will he stick all year with the drafted team? Even so, you don’t have to add him until the day before the Rule V draft.

Maybe
The Twins passed him through waivers to get him to the minors – it’s certainly not a guarantee that he’d get claimed in the Rule 5, although I suppose he pitched well enough at Rochester to make that a bit more likely.

My guess
We see Gabino (that’s already been stated), Dickey, Perkins, Morales, Buscher and maybe Hughes, Tolbert and Pridie.
I’m guessing Delaney and Slama both go to the Arizona Fall League, the Twins don’t callup people destined for AZ.

Depends on where you are in 10 days
If you’re out of it, you bring us some guys that you would not if you were in it. And vice-versa.

2nd Chance
I’d like to see Mulvey, Morillo, and Henn get another chance this season.

Roster Space
I happened to notice in the game notes from last night that Matt Macri cleared waivers after being designated for assignment and removed from the 40-man roster. I wonder if that’s a sign that Morillo (or someone else who’s not currently on the 40-man) might be given another shot, since I can’t see why they’d bother to clear space for no reason.

They cleared space for Humber

Yeah...
I completely forgot that Humber wasn’t on the 40-man when he was brought up to replace Liriano.

I'm getting an underwhelming suspicion
That the Twins will call up
Sean Henn and Yohan Pino along with Swarzak/ Mulvey
but not Robert Delaney or Anthony Slama this September….
. Is anyone else getting that feeling?

Henn and Pino
I don’t believe either are on the 40-man roster, so I doubt either will be coming up. I still like Henn, even though he was hit hard his last few appearances for the Twins. I think he was pitching nicked, if not injured. After his stay on the DL at Rochester, he has pitched very well again.

Funny feeling, toooo......
Look for Swarzak, Dickey, Mulvey, Morales, Butera, Busher, Tolbert and Pridie.
Instead, the Twins should call up Swarzak, Mulvey, Morillo, Morales, Plouffe, Tolleson, Valencia and maybe, just maybe Peterson or Huber.

+1
yeah but I almost feel like Alex Burnett or Rob Delaney will be called up though
I mean c’mon Twins!

Nah
AS long as I’ve been following the Twins, they very rarely call guys up who are not already on the 40-man. Every year, we speculate about six or eight guys comeing up and they bring four. My list:
- Jose Morales
- Kevin Mulvey
- Juan Morillo
- Sean Henn
- Danny Valencia

New
Sounds like the FO does not want to call anyone up just yet, not one person. Seems a bit harsh, they should at least get some of the infielders and maybe Pridie up. They have no pitchers worth bringing up.
