Game 124: Minnesota Twins @ Kansas City Royals

Minnesota Twins at Kansas City Royals, Aug 23, 2009 2:10 PM EDT

First Pitch:  1:10pm CDT
TV:  WFTC-29
Radio:  Twins Radio Network
Know Thine Enemy:  Royals Review

Starting Pitchers

W-LGGSCGSHOSVBSIPHRERHRBBKERAWHIP
2009 - Carl Pavano 1-1 3 3 0 0 0 0 18.0 17 10 10 2 6 15 5.00 1.28

One good and a pair of lackluster starts since Pavano's become a member of the Twins, and now he sees a team he's had a little trouble with this season.  This will be his fifth start against Kansas City, his second as a Twin, but in his first four go-rounds he's managed 23.2 innings while allowing a staggering 21 runs.  In many ways I think it's fair to say that Carl is due.

W-LGGSCGSHOSVBSIPHRERHRBBKERAWHIP
2009 - Brian Bannister 7-9 23 23 0 0 0 0 140.0 145 81 69 14 46 89 4.44 1.36

Bannister is also familiar with the Twins this season, about to make his fourth start of the year against Minnesota.  He did well in an April and a June appearance, but the Twins offense finally got to him on August 12 when they tagged him for seven runs over seven innings.  He's a decent pitcher with a good cut fastball and a good changeup, off-set by a fastball and a curve that have been fairly hittable.  Bannister is good enough to string together a number of good starts in a row, and can pitch to extremes.  If the offense is patient but Brian is on his game, by the time the bats wake up it might be too late if he's in a groove.  Hopefully this familiarity plays in Minnesota's favor today.

all these little minor things

that keep you out of the game but not major enough to put you on the DL seem to be the Twins stock and trade this season, sigh.

by ajmargarine on Aug 23, 2009 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

The concern was his back

Has he had any back problems this year? Seems to me he keeps getting hit by baseballs.

by JonathanR on Aug 23, 2009 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

The weird thing is, his back has only been a problem at the end of long road trips

I think it’s actually better in the Dome because he stands mostly on the rug with at least a little padding. On the road, he mostly stands on the hard-packed dirt.

Good inning by Pavano

He’s one guy I hope we bring back next year. He fits right into Anderson’s model.

Who had “I hope we bring back Carl Pavano next year” in the pool at the start of the season?

by JonathanR on Aug 23, 2009 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope he comes back too.

He can go deep into games and brings the veteran perspective.

good?

2 singles and a bunch of “breaking balls”?!? hanging over the middle of the plate??!?!?

I would say, lucky, or fortunate.

How many third strikes has Delmon taken this year?

Young: K'd

Funny, I think that’s the pitch they called for strike 2. And the pitch they called for ball 4 with Harris.

by Jesse on Aug 23, 2009 2:35 PM EDT reply actions

Nice pick up by Harris.

High throw, but that’ll do. Take those outs any way you can get them.

by Jesse on Aug 23, 2009 2:40 PM EDT reply actions

Casilla flies out...

…so now Bannister can try to pick off Gomez another 20 times.

by Jesse on Aug 23, 2009 2:50 PM EDT reply actions

Span!!

1st pitch, pulled past Butler, Gomez zooms to third. The throw wasn’t evn close. Wow he’s fast.

by Jesse on Aug 23, 2009 2:51 PM EDT reply actions

Teahen...

your screw ups make my day!

by fischean on Aug 23, 2009 2:54 PM EDT reply actions

Atta boy Teahen!!

Way to make sending Gordon to AAA look like a mistake dude.

1-0, Twins.

by Jesse on Aug 23, 2009 2:54 PM EDT reply actions

Why didn't Span get third there?

"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot

by cmathewson on Aug 23, 2009 2:55 PM EDT reply actions

Span could have made it if he'd hustled

The ball died in the grass after Teahan flubbed it. The shortstop had to go as far out there for it as it is from second to third.

by cmathewson on Aug 23, 2009 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I just rewound dvr and rewatched it

there’s no way anyone makes it from first to third there. By the time the SS was picking up the ball, Span, if he was running hard with the intent of going from first to third, would have been at best 1/3 of the way to third.

by ajmargarine on Aug 23, 2009 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Teahen was still covering third, but

I’m not sure how close DeJesus or Betancourt were in pursuit of the ball. It didn’t go far.

Looks like the ump

Pavano is looking good right now, retiring guys in order.

Let’s see if the offense can give him a little more support.

by Jesse on Aug 23, 2009 3:28 PM EDT reply actions

Another K for Pavano!

That’s five scoreless. Let’s go offense!!!

by Jesse on Aug 23, 2009 3:29 PM EDT reply actions

Delmon

Posted this to SBG too:

After Delmon’s PA last inning I poked around Baseball Reference a little. I know his historically consistent 2nd-half improvement is well-known, but check this split out — it’s one I haven’t seen mentioned (and I apologize if it has been):
CAREER vs. Power pitchers (28%or more K+BB rate): .508 OPS.
                 Vs. Avg Power/Finesse (24-28% K+BB rate): .720.
Vs. Finesse pitchers (less than 24% K+BB rate): .951 OPS.

No, that is NOT typical. But it IS dramatic. Basically, if a pitcher relies on his stuff to strike guys out, he’s going to to own Delmon. If he relies on suppressing walks and/or inducing groundballs (the usual picture of a guy with less than 24% K+BBs, D. Young’s decent to great. If Prof. Gardenhire took note of this and benched him against power pitchers, his overall numbers would look pretty darn good. The problem, of course, is that means Gomez and his .474 OPS vs. Power pitchers (he splits like Young only worse across the board) plays, so it doesn’t get the team very far, I suppose. Still, though, interesting numbers.

Those pitches early in the count where he wasn’t used to seeing Farnsworth hurt him. Good setup by Farnsworth, though.
