Game 125: Orioles at Twins

Baltimore Orioles at Minnesota Twins, Aug 24, 2009 8:10 PM EDT

Crikey, we're running out of weeks, aren't we?

First Pitch:  7:10pm CDT
TV:  FSDickandBert
Radio:  Twins Radio Network
Know Thine Enemy: Camden Chat

The Orioles are 51-73.  That said, they're 14-13 against the AL Central, so let's not count any Orioles before they've hatched.

Probable Pitchers

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2009 - Scott Baker 11-7 24 24 1 1 0 0 146.0 142 76 75 22 29 120 4.62 1.17

(shrugs shoulders)

I have no idea what Baker will do tonight.  He threw a shutout against the Indians ten days ago, and sandwiched that performance with a pair of disappointments, giving up six runs to Detroit and four to Texas.  He seems to be able to produce more foul balls than any other pitcher in the majors, which is fine except it usually leads to him throwing 110 pitches in the first four innings.  Anyway, he's the best we've got right now, so let's hope he's on.

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2009 - Chris Tillman 1-1 5 5 0 0 0 0 30.0 32 17 16 9 11 17 4.80 1.43

Just 21 years old, Tillman was good at AA last year (11-4, 3.18 ERA) and even better at AAA this year (8-6, 2.70 ERA), earning a mid-season callup along with Tuesday starter Brian Matusz.  The right-hander has pitched at least six innings in each of four August starts, compiling a 4.62 ERA in that span.  He has, however, given up nine home runs in five starts, including three his last time out.

And J-Mo is back!

And I get to go to this one! Think positive thoughts for us tonight!
I’ll be the guy with the Twins cap and the Morneau jersey, that should narrow it down some.

I too am pulling for a Twins victory

although the chaps from Baltimore seem like nice enough fellows

by ajmargarine on Aug 24, 2009 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I also must admit

my night would be better if the Twins were to win.Although I do like that Orange/Black combo.

I also feel bad for Balt that they are not in the AL Central. Think about how different their lives would be.

Who would win in a street fight...

Punto or Cal Ripken with no arms and legs?

by taskersd on Aug 24, 2009 8:06 PM EDT reply actions

it would be a draw

Punto would take a lot of swings at Ripken, but always miss. Punto would find a way to get his uniform dirty, though.

Glad to see Morneau back in the lineup,

although it was nice to see Gomez and Young get consistent playing time.

OT - Johan

Has an elbow injury, likely requiring surgery…ouch.

I just saw that. Sounds like he might be out for the year. Another rough break for the Mets. Not that I’m crying for them or anything. Our very own “ace” is also out for the year. Sigh.

I recommend a nice IPA. Two hearted, Breckenridge. Or go with my local favorite: Surly Furious.

Terry Ryan has long been abn advocate of that, mirroring the minors

The MLBPA would not allow it.

I wonder what the reasoning is?

More DL flexibility = more callups from the minors = more MLB players?

I don't understand the Union's resistence

Every opportunity for a AAA guy to impress ought to be good for the union.

I would love to see Gomez telling everyone how happy he is to have won the World Series. Eh, since we’re dreaming, he’ll go 5-5, with a HR and a few excellent catches to win MVP.

by fischean on Aug 24, 2009 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

hey, why not.

He will also fill in for Baker in the 8th when something weird happens to the bullpen, though Nathan is miraculously saved and is able to pitch a solid 3 up, 3 down 9th inning.

I am SO glad we won tonight.

The 2 game bastard of a series we lost to them earlier in the season just made me furious. That one 5 inning monstrosity was just terrible. Both games were just lame. This is nice, if only to make up for those two.

Canundrum

Does this change offseason plans for second base? Has he turned a corner or is he destined for a few good stretches and a few stretches when he doesn’t belong in AA?

by cmathewson on Aug 25, 2009 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

sample size

isn’t this good run too small to make a decision one way or another for next year?
I’d love to see him play well enough to hold the position for the team but I want to at least wait until the end of the season so it can be looked at as a complete body of work.

by caluofmn on Aug 25, 2009 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I meant, assuming he plays this well 'till the end of the year....

….is that good enough to count on him next year? I don’t think so. My hope is that he plays well enough so we can trade him. For guys like Casilla and Punto, inconsistency is an insidious form of suckitude. They play just well enough to tease you but not well enough to deserve yet another shot.
