Game 127: Baltimore Orioles @ Minnesota Twins
Baltimore Orioles at Minnesota Twins, Aug 26, 2009 8:10 PM EDT
First Pitch: 7:10pm CDT
TV: FS-N
Radio: Twins Radio Network
Know Thine Enemy: Camden Chat
My pick to click tonight: Cuddles
- Cuddyer was gushing about Delmon after the game last night. Let's hope a little public confidence from a team leader can lay a little ground work and help him boost his game long-term.
- Cuddyer, in his last 94 plate appearances, is hitting .303/.340/.562 with give homers and eight doubles.
- Cuddyer's nickname is Cuddles. It should make you feel warm inside.
- The Twins are currently riding a season-best five-game winning streak, and are now tied for second place in the Central. It can't stop now--it's time to rack up number six.
Starting Pitchers
Since lowering his ERA to sub-3.00 when he tossed a complete game against the Tigers, Blackburn's last eight starts have seen him boast an ERA of over 8.00. Hitters have shelacked him, with a triple slash of .375/.399/.625. That's just ridiculous. Hopefully he's getting back on his game, since his last time out he pulled seven innings and just three runs against. Nick isn't an ace, we know this, but don't forget that he was the stopper in the rotation for a long time earlier this season. When he pitches to his ability, inducing contact and keeping the ball in the park, he can be an efficient out machine. That's what the Twins need him to be tonight.
A 15th-round pick by the Mets in 1997. A 3rd-round pick by the Pirates in 2001. A 1st-round pick by the Indians in 2002, after being high on Billy Beane's draft board as noted in Moneyball. He was 23 when he was drafted, so it should be no surprise that the Indians tried to move him quickly in spite of underwhelming numbers in the minors. Brief appearances in a Cleveland uniform in '04, '05 and '06 didn't show anything better, and when the Orioles claimed him off waivers in January of 2007 it was a relatively quiet maneuver. A good slider and fastball helped him to consecutive seasons with ERA's in the 3's, but this season he's fought a viral infection for much of the season. Whether that's had a direct affect on how he pitches, his slider and fastball haven't been anywhere near as good as they were in '07 and '08. He's averaging less than six innings per start for the first time as an Oriole. He's a talented pitcher, but he's having a down season. Opposing batters are making more contact this season, so look for Guthrie to succeed the same way Blackburn does--by inducing contact and letting the defense take care of the rest.

Nothing like starting Punto at third to halt a five game winning streak.
If I were to pen my own thesaurus Punto would be a synonym to puke.

I promise I'm not scoreboard watching...
But in checking my fantasy team’s stats so far today, I couldn’t help but notice that the Tiggers are losing in the 8th. IMO, it is always appropriate to root for a division rival to lose, even when you are TOTALLY not scoreboard watching because that would be silly and irrational and jumping the gun.
Punto's back in the lineup...
I suppose it had to happen at some point, but does anyone else find it interesting that we’ve gone on a five game winning streak, and the last time Punto started a game was our last loss, 11-1 at Texas. I’m just saying…
I do find it sort of encouraging that it took five games to get him in, and he didn’t take Casilla’s spot in the lineup. Seems pretty clear he’s been demoted, and I fully approve. I’m sure (hopefully) Harris will be back at 3B for the next start (or, fingers crossed, Crede).
That's the problem
I don’t think Gardy will be able to help himself. I’ve seen it too often, just when I think Punto is back in his rightful backup role, Gardy ends up playing him 10 games in a row.

Punto
We all love to hate good ol’ #8. He’s a good utility player and giving him a start with a groundball pitcher starting for the Twins isn’t a bad idea. I wouldn’t mind seeing LNP start a game at short in one of the games vs. Texas or maybe at second. Keep him on the bench most of the time and keep the other guys fresh.

Utility
I always had a soft spot for Punto as our utility guy. He seems to do much better in short spurts. It was the whole starting shortstop thing that soured me on him. Hard to forget the pain of that little adventure this quickly. Agreed that he has a role on this team, though.
You guys and your soft spots for LNP.
He sucks. Utility, short, second, third, he sucks wherever he plays. He can’t hit it out of the infield.

+1
He has two hot streaks a yea when he seems like a very good ball player. But he has four cold streaks a year when he seems like he doesn’t belong in the majors. The fact that he’s the fourth highest paid guy on this team, and we’re stuck with his contract through 2010 is pathetic.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
Oh my soft spot ABSOLUTELY does not extend to his contract. The terms of that thing are a travesty of epic proportions. I kind of want to hire his agent to do my contract negotiations for me, though.

I don't understand why they don't DL Crede
at this point. Why play with a 24 man roster for the rest of the week when you don’t have to?

Boras is looking over their shoulder
If they DL him before they get the doctor’s opinion, he could file a grievance and claim the Twins are trying to save incentive payouts.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
It would be an absurd grievance
And for all of Boras’ bluster, ultimately, he isn’t absurd.

… that’s not counting today either. I knew he would regress a bit after the strong first half, but he’s done more than regress, he’s tanked.

I see Blackburn
hasnt changed…still gives up homers to the scruffy men. If Punto faced him each day, he would finish with 47 homers!

I think Blackie is hanging in there okay.
If he can get through 6 with only 3 runs on the board, I consider that a success for him.
(and it would mean 2 solid starts in a row)

not only his fault this time
Two of those pitches were arguably strikes, and only giving up one run in the situation he came into is pretty good
