Thanks, Garza
Matt Garza haunts the Twins again, turning in probably his worst start of the season and falling to 7-9 this season as Los Tigres win.
Sure, you can talk about run support.
You can talk about bad luck.
Certainly, he has pitched better than this record, but the bottom line is the Rays aren't winning when he's starting, and that's not the idea.
The Rays are 13-13 in his starts this year. For a .590 baseball club.
This will continue to be a trade people speak about for a long time, but in two seasons with the Rays Matt Garza is 18-18, and Tampa Bay is 27-29 when Garza starts.

Shouldn't you be clinging to every word Steve Phillips utters, instead of wasting bandwidth here?

But who would you rather have?
Perkins or Garza?
Liriano or Garza?
Blackburn or Garza?
I would still want Baker and Slowey, but after that, it was still a bad bad bad bad bad bad bad deal.

It was a bad deal
It just doesn’t look quite as bad tonight. Except for Bartlett’s .340 average. Worst trade in my lifetime as a Twins fan just on Bartlett alone.

I think we covered that
Perhaps you missed the “certainly he’s pitched better than his record.”
Aside from that, you’re the one comparing him to Twins’ starters who are Nos. 3 and lower. I don’t think the Rays were trading for a No. 3 starters.
As much as people like to look at SO/IP, ERA, blah, blah, blah, the idea is to win. People love to talk about Nolan Ryan. He couldn’t field for shit, threw baseballs at people who dared to bunt on him, threw baseballs at people in general, wasn’t great at holding runners and didn’t win enough, despite the teams he played on.He pitched five more seasons than Blyleven and had fewer complete games. He also couldn’t hit. He didn’t do a lot to help his team win.
Hell, Livan Hernandez has done a better job at helping his teams win in the past two seasons than Garza. Winning is the bottom line. The rest of it is a contract negotiation.
For all the yak about Garza, he wasn’t exactly EInstein when he was here, and it’s reaching the point where I have to wonder what the Numbskull Factor is here.

Well Garza was the ALCS MVP
So I mean, he did win when it counted. 2-1 in the 2008 post-season with a 3.96 ERA and 25 Ks in 25.0 IP. Since helping teams win is your gold standard here, it’s probably worth reminding you that the Twins didn’t have an ALCS MVP last year.

Wrong as Phillips typically is...
…parroting him has always been your best stuff.

Garza
seems to always have tough luck with the run support. I think he lost a game 1-0 here in 2007, without giving up an earned run.

Garza has not been unlucky this year.
His FIP is higher than his ERA.

Wrong luck stat
The bad luck STLVikesFan is referring to is in reference to his won-loss record, not ERA. He’s got an ERA under 4 (barely, but that’s still better than average), so you’d expect better than a .500 record on a good offensive team.

Um, I’ll take it?

No
No one would take the worst left fielder in the game in exchange for the best shortstop and a solid starter.

Garza gets the least run support of any AL starter
I don’t think it’s fair to put Garza’s losses entirely on Garza. He currently has the least run support of any AL starter (6th least in MLB overall). At 3.73 runs / 9 innings, you can’t expect Garza to win a lot of games. We aren’t just talking poor run support, we’re talking worst in the AL…
Interestingly, Jeff “Big Nyquil” Niemann also has the most run support of any AL starter at 6.96 runs / 9 innings.
