Days of the 23-man roster nearly over

With September call-ups and Crede going on the DL, Gardenhire will have a full bench to work with, rather than  a 23-man roster when Crede couldn't answer the bell and a 24-man roster and two bullpen catchers when Crede could high-pants it onto the field.

Nice career for an underdog who was never supposed to make it to The Show, Redmond, but one look in April and it was clear the skills were gone. It's not just the Brett Favres of the sports world who don't want to step aside.

It must have been interesting in the Twins' front office this August as they felt hogtied on what to do with Redmond as the pages fell form the calendar at a glacial pace.

Yeah........

You should always have a roster full of the best 25-that-can-play.

Morales not on the bench. Redmond going off slowly into the sunset.

Crede…if he can’t play, let us see someone else shine, maybe. And I don’t mean Harris or Punto. How about a replacement for 2009…maybe. If Valencia doesn’t show half-assed promise, look for the Joe Dillons and Brian Bushcers, again.

They shut down Perkins. They shut down Liriano.

Got rid of Humber.

Isn’t Rauch better tha…Keppel?

Man, we have to watch Gabino and Manship eat innings. Maybe theya re a future.

But, yes…can’t wait to see the end of Redmond, thanks Crede for 15 dingers, but…and, let’s do something about little Nicky!

"cant wait to see the end of Redmond"

that statement is pathetic! Redmond has provided the Twins with the best 1-2 punch in the AL for a few years! Redmond has brought leadership and humor to the dugout. Pitching staff always remarks on how great a pitching coach Redmond is.

Now, to say that you cant wait to see the end of Redmond, just because he is at the end of the road and likely retiring after this year, is just pathetic!

Following in your philosophy: I couldnt wait to see the end of Ted Kennedy. I cant wait to see the end of Brett Favre..again. I can’t wait to see the end of Joe Mauer. I cant wait to see the end of Justin Morneau.

This is hardly the way to speak about a player such as Redmond…

Redmond has been great for the Twins, until this year

The Twins have a horrible record when he starts behind the plate, even when Super Joe DHs. With our catching depth, it’s a serious liability having a guy like that on the roster. Perhaps rosterman was a little tactless in what he said, but there’s plenty of truth behind the words. The Twins will be much better with Morales as the back-up next year.

and I completely agree with that

and I believe that Redmond would as well, but it sounded like rosterman was knocking Redmond off for his overall performance which should not be done. Without Redmond, I doubt the Twins would have gotten to the playoffs for x of the past x years. Redmond has been probably the greatest influence in the dugout and I believe that he knows that he is at the end of the road, but I would really like for him to be resigned not as a player, but as a bench coach or something like that.

I don't think Rosterman meant any offense

to Redmond’s career…simply that his performance this year has hurt the bottom line. And it kind of has. I love Redmond, and I think every Twins fan does, but it has been a tough year.

What's pathetic is...

…Redmond fell victim to the same thing that most athletes fall victim to: denial about when it’s over.

Yes, he contributed well as a role player in the past. But baseball, like most of life, is what-have-you-done-for-me-lately proposition.

As much as you love him, I bet he was never on your fantasy team. Why not? Because he didn’t contribute, and you didn’t want someone on your team who didn’t contribute.

Well, transfer that to real life, multiply by 1,000, and you can see that Redmond was an anchor on this year’s team.

What have you done for me lately

Weren’t the Twins a .500 team in April without Joltin’ Joe?

I take that back

His April line was horrible. But hey, in August his line is .333 / .429 / .389 and he’s .321 / .387 / .357 post all-star break.

Not just hitting

His defense has slipped two seasons in one year. It was never great (he has slow reflexes to begin with, which is why he’s always getting dinged). And his arm has always been below average. But it’s much worse this year than last.

He’s definitely showing his age. I’d like to see them give him a minor league managing job at Beloit or something next year.

yeah I agree

Redmond should probably be done after this season. But like Morneau33 said, that’s different than calling him pathetic and in “denial about when it’s over.”

Back in 2006, the Twins signed him to a 2 year contract with a 3rd year club option. The Twins exercised that club option for this season and with Mauer was looking questionable for the season, I think it was the right call.

Perhaps the Twins made the right call, but Redmond did not

And the right call for Redmond would be to make a radical departure from most athletes and understand that it’s over.

I’m sure the Twins would have done the right thing and honored payment of his contract out of respect for what he has meant to the organization.

He has not helped the team, yet he hasn’t stepped aside.

That’s denial.

And what’s pathetic – as clearly stated in the original post – is: “Redmond fell victim to the same thing that most athletes fall victim to: denial about when it’s over.”

Have some empathy for old Montana

I hope.......

Redmond does return to the Twins, as a coach. Would love to see him coem to the major elague team, but the five seem pretty solid in their roles, unless Stele is ready for retirement. I’m not sure if RedDog would like to sit out in the bullpen all games, but who knows.

The Twins should find a palce for him within the organization.

But…chances are he’ll try to catch on somewhere in 2010 (if not again with the Twins). Who knows.

I am a big Redmond fan. Always thought he was a dynamtie bat to come off the bench in a pinch-hitting situation, would put the ball in play and not K-out. But this year he seems to have lsot the throwing ability and becme, also, a competent singles hitter.

Not sure ir Morales can keep up his hitting, but…we’ll see, until it becomes Wilson Ramos time (or Danny Rams time).
