Game 131: White Sox at Twins
Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins, Aug 31, 2009 8:10 PM EDT
Every game's important now, whether it's against the Sox or some out-of-division team. With Minnesota ahead of Chicago, this one hardly matters as an AL Central matchup - it's just that the Twins need to somehow make up games on the Tigers.
First Pitch: 7:10pm CDT
TV: FSN
Radio: Twins Radio Network
Know Thine Enemy: South Side Sox
Probable Starters
He hasn't won in eight straight starts. During that span, he has an 8.22 ERA, is allowing nearly two baserunners per inning, and has made it as far as the seventh inning just three times. It all started with the All-Star break, followed by that 14-13 disaster in Oakland, and Blackburn hasn't recovered since. In other words: hope all you want, but when he's been on the mound lately, things get ugly, fast.
Floyd had a momentary scare last start, when he felt some pain in his hip but stayed in the game. He's been downplaying the injury, but we'll see how he reacts. In August, he's had four quality starts in five attempts - but is just 2-2, as the Sox can't score any runs for him (they've plated two or fewer in 11 of his 26 starts this year).

Win Twins!
The Tigers lost earlier, so a win would be huge tonight

WHAT?
With Minnesota ahead of Chicago, this one hardly matters as an AL Central matchup – it’s just that the Twins need to somehow make up games on the Tigers.
I know we are getting down to fewer and fewer games, but the sox are just 1.5 behind us. If we are still in it then I can’t see how they aren’t. And besides, on another note, the AL Central matchups are also key because we have proven over and over again this season that we can’t beat the AL East teams and we are lucky to take a series against the West…we gotta take the AL Central series…

I agree
I’m not counting the Sox out yet. A series win here would really give us 2nd for sure and put us in a better position to catch the Tiggers.

Unrelated statistics question
Say, hypothetically, that I keep hearing the argument that Mauer is not an everyday catcher and therefore should not win the MVP (remember, I said hypothetically…I’m sure no one would EVER make this silly argument). I would like to find out how many games he has started at catcher (or innings caught…just something separating out catching innings from DH innings). Any thoughts on how I can calculate/ find this? I’m sure it’s someplace obvious, but so far my searching has turned up nada…
Fangraphs is great for that
Their Twins page is here. Just click a position to see how many games each player at that position has for the season.
So far, Mauer has 84 games (375 PA) as catcher, and 21 games (99 PA) as DH.
by what_would_gil_thorp_do on Aug 31, 2009 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions
To further debunk that argument,
compare other top notch catcher’s percentage of games started at “C” vs. Mauer’s. I’m sure that as a percentage he is not far behind any so called “everyday” catcher. Don’t all catchers get some significant days off during the course of the season?
by montanatwinsfan on Aug 31, 2009 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions
They all get a good amount of time off
I want to say it’s around 4 days on, 1 day off for the starting catcher, but I’m sure it varies a lot. Things like day games following night games or doubleheaders change who is catching, and there’s always injuries to consider.

Morneau: 5-23, 1 2B, 2 HR, 1 BB

Nice first inning there by our offense.
We didn’t score but we made floyd work hard and we saw a lot of pitches.

i disagree, yes we made Floyd throw a lot of pitches. but when our top two spots in the lineup get hits, and then we have Mauer, Morneau, and Kubel up. WE NEED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THOSE SITUATIONS. for real…….
I actually agree with you
but during the losing streaks the board was quick to point out moral victories… I was saying it’s too soon for those…fine if we get one but the Twins need to be past that it’s now time for real victories
Top of the 2nd:
- J. Dye struck out looking.
- A. Rios struck out swinging.
- A. Ramirez grounded out to shortstop.

And that is why he gets the Baby Jesus nickname
by what_would_gil_thorp_do on Aug 31, 2009 9:08 PM EDT reply actions
It started out derogatory
It’s only became a compliment this year, when he’s having one of the 10 best seasons in major league history. When he was merely the first AL catcher to win a batting title at the age of 24, people like Barreiro called him that as a sarcastic joke.

OH MY GOD.
That was awesome. AWESOME.
Second place, even more secure. Gained a game on Los Tigres…amazing!
Welcome Minnesota
to 3.5 games back….(with a 66-65 record).

ohhh, the level of basking is high tonight
Having coffee and gloating with my White Sox friend tomorrow. It’s like coffee and donuts, but far more enjoyable for me.
Don't worry about Nathan...
…those bad games are just small blips on a huge screen. I’d rather have him come in to get an out than anybody on the Twins team (or practically every other team)

whatever is in the Dome
better get carried over to Target Field b/c I love me some Twins wins at the Dome against the Sux
there are rarely wins that are more satisfying than those against the ChiSox...
it just makes me all warm and happy inside.
uh do you twoneed a room?
I could donate fitty cents

but really
whatever makes the Twins so good at the Dome against Chicago…find a way to bottle it and pour it all over the new field…
this seems fair enough
there’s too much going on too soon. Wild start up on the 25th. Baseball, football, hockey. Yikes.
first thing I’ll notice are the Gophers…then the Vikings or Wild depending on whether I see my shadow or not
damn baseball distracted me from my football game!

I like the nickname Blackie because in the movie for a Few Dollars More, Blackie is one
of the members of the gang that Clint Eastwood as (Manco) faces

Im gunna call him Brownie
its more gay, his beard looks brown not black, and it represents the stains he left on the towels this month after hitting the shower early this month.

wow...way to be a downer.
:(
and Blackbeard was because his name is Blackburn…ah, screw it. Never mind.
Good pitching and timeley hitting and no Childress sightings...it doesn't get any better

Actually he probably wanted to clone Favre and start an entire game with the same guy

That was the extent of my Spanish speaking for about 5 years. Add -o to everything and you’re good to go-o. ;)
it's not like girls pay attention to how hot the women are in movies
but the men…well, yes, we catch that.
Who said I watched the movies for the women?

yeah yeah, ok.
I’m sure I’m wrong on that. and if there was a way to show i’m rolling my eyes at you, I would. Just assume it’s happening. :)
Me dominating her in an argument is entertaining

if that were happening, it might be.
but it’s not, so I’m assuming that’s not what is entertaining him. :)
both true
Twins and Vikings win tonight (despite it not being ‘football season’, they still won). :)
and most minnesotans are pleased
it’s so sad how the Vikes are always page 1 above the fold and the twins are…the Twins…
The boring Vikings won a pre-season game so life in Minnesota can continue for one more week. YAHOO!
