Game 131: White Sox at Twins

Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins, Aug 31, 2009 8:10 PM EDT

Every game's important now, whether it's against the Sox or some out-of-division team.  With Minnesota ahead of Chicago, this one hardly matters as an AL Central matchup - it's just that the Twins need to somehow make up games on the Tigers.

First Pitch:  7:10pm CDT
TV:  FSN
Radio:  Twins Radio Network
Know Thine Enemy: South Side Sox

Probable Starters

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2009 - Nick Blackburn 8-9 26 26 3 0 0 0 161.2 195 88 77 20 38 68 4.29 1.44

He hasn't won in eight straight starts.  During that span, he has an 8.22 ERA, is allowing nearly two baserunners per inning, and has made it as far as the seventh inning just three times.  It all started with the All-Star break, followed by that 14-13 disaster in Oakland, and Blackburn hasn't recovered since.  In other words: hope all you want, but when he's been on the mound lately, things get ugly, fast.

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2009 - Gavin Floyd 10-8 26 26 1 0 0 0 171.0 156 81 75 18 56 145 3.95 1.24

Floyd had a momentary scare last start, when he felt some pain in his hip but stayed in the game.  He's been downplaying the injury, but we'll see how he reacts.  In August, he's had four quality starts in five attempts - but is just 2-2, as the Sox can't score any runs for him (they've plated two or fewer in 11 of his 26 starts this year).

Win Twins!

The Tigers lost earlier, so a win would be huge tonight

WHAT?
With Minnesota ahead of Chicago, this one hardly matters as an AL Central matchup – it’s just that the Twins need to somehow make up games on the Tigers.

I know we are getting down to fewer and fewer games, but the sox are just 1.5 behind us. If we are still in it then I can’t see how they aren’t. And besides, on another note, the AL Central matchups are also key because we have proven over and over again this season that we can’t beat the AL East teams and we are lucky to take a series against the West…we gotta take the AL Central series…

The Sox aren’t out of it yet. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves

by what_would_gil_thorp_do on Aug 31, 2009 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

I’m not counting the Sox out yet. A series win here would really give us 2nd for sure and put us in a better position to catch the Tiggers.

Unrelated statistics question

Say, hypothetically, that I keep hearing the argument that Mauer is not an everyday catcher and therefore should not win the MVP (remember, I said hypothetically…I’m sure no one would EVER make this silly argument). I would like to find out how many games he has started at catcher (or innings caught…just something separating out catching innings from DH innings). Any thoughts on how I can calculate/ find this? I’m sure it’s someplace obvious, but so far my searching has turned up nada…

by dctwin on Aug 31, 2009 6:34 PM EDT reply actions

Fangraphs is great for that

Their Twins page is here. Just click a position to see how many games each player at that position has for the season.

So far, Mauer has 84 games (375 PA) as catcher, and 21 games (99 PA) as DH.

by what_would_gil_thorp_do on Aug 31, 2009 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions

To further debunk that argument,

compare other top notch catcher’s percentage of games started at “C” vs. Mauer’s. I’m sure that as a percentage he is not far behind any so called “everyday” catcher. Don’t all catchers get some significant days off during the course of the season?

by montanatwinsfan on Aug 31, 2009 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions

They all get a good amount of time off

I want to say it’s around 4 days on, 1 day off for the starting catcher, but I’m sure it varies a lot. Things like day games following night games or doubleheaders change who is catching, and there’s always injuries to consider.

by what_would_gil_thorp_do on Aug 31, 2009 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

I lost it a little bit when someone pointed out that he DHs so often. I can’t see how that would hurt his team more than sitting on the bench like most catchers do on their day off… Some people refuse to see reason, however. Fact.

It started out derogatory

It’s only became a compliment this year, when he’s having one of the 10 best seasons in major league history. When he was merely the first AL catcher to win a batting title at the age of 24, people like Barreiro called him that as a sarcastic joke.

I personally don’t care for it. Why take the Lord’s name in vain?
