Game 108: Minnesota Twins @ Cleveland Indians
Minnesota Twins at Cleveland Indians, Aug 6, 2009 12:05 PM EDT
First Pitch: 11:05am CDT
TV: MLB.TV
Radio: Twins Radio Network
Know Thine Enemy: Let's Go Tribe!
It's an early start this afternoon in Cleveland (morning for those back home in Minnesota). After splitting the first two games, the Twins (53-54) look to take their sixth straight series against an AL Central foe and return to the .500 mark.
After spending much of the first half as the Twins' most dependable starter, Nick has hit a rough patch in the second half. In his last four starts, Blackburn has given up 30 hits and 21 runs (all earned) in 22.1 innings. Ouch. However, during these starts, his GB/FB, HR and SO/BB rates have stayed pretty much in line with season totals. His BABIP has regressed from around .270 to .305 at this point. Hopefully the regression is done.
After a horrid start to the 2009 season, Fausto Carmona spent two months in Arizona working on his mechanics. Last week, in his first start back, Carmona walked 4 batters in 5 innings. The control problems continue. Look for the Twins to be very patient against Carmona today. Jason Kubel (10 for 20, 2 HR) has had success against Carmona in the past, let's hope it continues today.

Redmond should have played last night....
LHP last night… RHP today…
Gardy usually tries to play Red against the LHP when there’s a nightgame→daygame pair.

Day game
I can already feel my work productivity going down.
Question for the board – how will you judge whether picking up OC was a success?
He leads the Twins to the playoffs
Using your mad math skills you can show that the Twins won more games with him than they would have w/out him (whether they make the playoffs or not)
I got to watch alot less Casilla and Punto ABs
For me – of course I want to see the Twins in the post season but unless OC can pitch, I’m not going to pin a playoff appearance just on him. I don’t have mad math skills, so if at the end of the season it feels like he was a positive instead of a negative then it will be a success (especially b/c the Twins didn’t give up much for him)
Once again proving I’m all opinion and no science…
Win Twins!

Cabrera is a success
if he provides us solid value (as verified by mad math skills) through the rest of the year. I’m guessing around +8 runs above replacement makes it a success in my book, considering where we were.
Unfortunately, it will take a big improvement on the mound for us to make the playoffs. So I would rate the overall GM strategy at the deadline based on whether we make the playoffs.

8 runs?
I don’t know if he’s going to get there. That’s almost one win and he wasn’t on pace for that this year.
Then again, if you look at his career numbers it’s doable

If Cabrera performs as he has in 2009 to this point
I would consider the trade to be a failure.

Good to see Cuddy's still got an arm...
Just the 3rd assist this year. Hopefully this gets him going again.

Cuddyer's assists
They have rarely run on him. Beside that, he has had some tough luck and good throws (bad calls, good slides and poor tags). The arm is fine. I just hope the bat heats up again.

well ...
1. Harris has never been quite as good a hitter as O-Cab and that will likely stay the same for 2 more years;
2. Harris has been serviceable defensively – and O-Cab might lose enough to drop to just serviceable over the next two years as he is already almost there;
3. Cabrera brings serious veteran presence and confidence that Harris doesn’t – like it or not, measurable or not, it does matter (how much? who knows)

is he has traditionally worn down as the season goes along. That’s what happened this year. He was going along well and he just went like 0-30 with all kinds of defensive problems.

ESPN’s splits are telling me that the Twins are .272/362/438 with RISP this season. 5th in Avg, 7th in OBP, 3rd in SLG, 5th in OPS.
