Game 109: Minnesota Twins @ Detroit Tigers

Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers, Aug 7, 2009 7:05 PM EDT

First Pitch:  6:05 CDT
TV:  FSN
Radio:  AM 1500 & TRN
Know Thine Enemy: Bless You Boys

Detroit: Rock City

The latest most important series of the season starts tonight.  At worst, the Twins need to win 2 out of 3.  The Tigers have Justin Verlander going against Glen Perkins Carl Pavano tomorrow.  Let's focus on this evening, shall we?

Your starting pitchers:

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2009 - Anthony Swarzak 3-4 9 9 0 0 0 0 48.2 52 25 23 4 17 27 4.25 1.42

Swarzak gets to pitch against someone besides the Los Angeles Angels tonight.  After last Saturday's pasting, that's likely for the best.  Still, it's another must-win game for the Twins where they desperately need their rookie fifth starter to pitch like the veteran staff ace.  This is suboptimal.

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2009 - Armando Galarraga 5-10 21 21 0 0 0 0 119.0 128 71 69 20 50 76 5.22 1.50

Coming off an impressive 2008 season (13-7 record, 3.73 ERA, 5th in the AL Rookie of the Year voting), Galarraga has been less than dominant.  Don't take my word for it, ask Jim Leyland.  Quite simply, the Twins need to pound the hell out of him and anyone else the Tigers throw out there.  End of discussion.

Your questions:

  • As noted just about everywhere, new Twin Carl Pavano has pwned the Tigers this year (3-0, 1.93 ERA).  Does he get another shot at them this weekend? (Answer: yes.  Yes, he does.  Perkins goes to the bullpen.)
  • I am entertained by Orlando Cabrera.  Is he eroding anyone else's skepticism?
  • The Twins clubhouse does not sound a happy place right now, does it?
  • The healthy Joe C. says the unhealthy Joe C. is out for this series.  Are you ready for the Danny Valencia Era yet?

Your lineups:

Enjoy the game, everybody.

He’s pitching tomorrow for Perkins I believe.

That would be good

I like Pavano vs. Verlander much better than Perkins vs Verlander. As long as we leave it as Baker vs Washburn on Sunday, I feel good about our matchups this series.

well if he can do as well as the last time against Los Tigres

we’ll have a great shot at winning the game.

I really hope the team finds the Fight in them and battles to a win tonight.

This series is so, so important.

I hope the Twins can pull off at least 2 of 3, if not a sweep (yes, I know, that’s asking a lot).

Also, that article about the clubhouse…yikes. Doesn’t help when you go around blaming each other.

What are we at the park for except to win? I'd trip my mother. I'd help her up, brush her off, tell her I'm sorry. But mother don't make it to third. -Leo Durocher

by fischean on Aug 7, 2009 6:53 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed...

A Twins sweep would turn the division upside down. The race would be wide open.

Losing a series at this point… well the math really starts to stack against us. Especially if it was a sweep loss.

by DavidRF on Aug 7, 2009 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Twins may have 4-5 people

with not just double digit homers by years end, but with 20+ homers at years end:

Morneau – 28
Mauer – 19
Kubel – 19
Cuddyer – 17
Crede – 14

All of those players could all be above 20+ homers at the end of the season (except Morneau who should be over 30). When was the last time the Twins had 4-5 players with 20 or more homers?

for sure,

but Granderson’s ankle clearly got knocked, Granderson took an odd step because of it, it was clear on replay, but yes, VERY close and I suppose next to impossible in realt time maybe.

Yeah, it was pretty clear that Granderson knew what was going on.

Not yet,

Swarzak can still setle down, he would have had three easy outs with three weak grounders had:
1. Punto no error
2. Timely hit and run that pulled O-Cab out of the hit that went exactly to where he WAS standing,
3. Dribbler to Morneau that would have been third out.

he's not pausing in his delivery

it’s kind of tricky because he doesn’t move his glove like normal pitchers do when they transfer the ball from their right hand to the glove. But some of these seem like quick pitches.
