Game 109: Minnesota Twins @ Detroit Tigers
Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers, Aug 7, 2009 7:05 PM EDT
Detroit: Rock City
The latest most important series of the season starts tonight. At worst, the Twins need to win 2 out of 3. The Tigers have Justin Verlander going against Glen Perkins Carl Pavano tomorrow. Let's focus on this evening, shall we?
Your starting pitchers:
Swarzak gets to pitch against someone besides the Los Angeles Angels tonight. After last Saturday's pasting, that's likely for the best. Still, it's another must-win game for the Twins where they desperately need their rookie fifth starter to pitch like the veteran staff ace. This is suboptimal.
Coming off an impressive 2008 season (13-7 record, 3.73 ERA, 5th in the AL Rookie of the Year voting), Galarraga has been less than dominant. Don't take my word for it, ask Jim Leyland. Quite simply, the Twins need to pound the hell out of him and anyone else the Tigers throw out there. End of discussion.
Your questions:
- As noted just about everywhere, new Twin Carl Pavano has pwned the Tigers this year (3-0, 1.93 ERA). Does he get another shot at them this weekend? (Answer: yes. Yes, he does. Perkins goes to the bullpen.)
- I am entertained by Orlando Cabrera. Is he eroding anyone else's skepticism?
- The Twins clubhouse does not sound a happy place right now, does it?
- The healthy Joe C. says the unhealthy Joe C. is out for this series. Are you ready for the Danny Valencia Era yet?
Your lineups:
Enjoy the game, everybody.

He’s pitching tomorrow for Perkins I believe.

That would be good
I like Pavano vs. Verlander much better than Perkins vs Verlander. As long as we leave it as Baker vs Washburn on Sunday, I feel good about our matchups this series.

well if he can do as well as the last time against Los Tigres
we’ll have a great shot at winning the game.
I really hope the team finds the Fight in them and battles to a win tonight.
Win Twins!
Hate to miss the game
But I gotta pay some bills tonight. So…

This series is so, so important.
I hope the Twins can pull off at least 2 of 3, if not a sweep (yes, I know, that’s asking a lot).
Also, that article about the clubhouse…yikes. Doesn’t help when you go around blaming each other.

Twins may have 4-5 people
with not just double digit homers by years end, but with 20+ homers at years end:
Morneau – 28
Mauer – 19
Kubel – 19
Cuddyer – 17
Crede – 14
All of those players could all be above 20+ homers at the end of the season (except Morneau who should be over 30). When was the last time the Twins had 4-5 players with 20 or more homers?

ok,
but that wasn’t Harris’ fault he clearly tougched Granderson’s ankle…
by montanatwinsfan on Aug 7, 2009 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions
for sure,
but Granderson’s ankle clearly got knocked, Granderson took an odd step because of it, it was clear on replay, but yes, VERY close and I suppose next to impossible in realt time maybe.

Yeah, it was pretty clear that Granderson knew what was going on.
What a crappy start to the game.

Punto boot, Cabrera gets burned on a hitnrun
Grounder to first and Harris doesn’t make the out clear enough for the ump
This game is ridiculous!
And it’s only the first inning. Loooong night.

Not yet,
Swarzak can still setle down, he would have had three easy outs with three weak grounders had:
1. Punto no error
2. Timely hit and run that pulled O-Cab out of the hit that went exactly to where he WAS standing,
3. Dribbler to Morneau that would have been third out.

That's what Bert thinks
Something about Galarraga not taking the time to stop in his windup. I’m not seeing it.
he's not pausing in his delivery
it’s kind of tricky because he doesn’t move his glove like normal pitchers do when they transfer the ball from their right hand to the glove. But some of these seem like quick pitches.

Bremer was convinced that fly ball was going over the fence
and then it lands in Ordonez’s glove in mid-right field.
I had my head turned, and then Bremer yelling like it's game 7
and the ball is 40 feet short of the fence.

Must be tough occasionally. You want that anticipatory excitement of the long ball, but then you misjudge it and it’s a harmless flyout.
Duensing's doing pretty OK here.

Unfortunately he did the same thing I do in softball,
I am also 5’2" and I know my strength is to make contact and run, but I still sometimes pull for the fence… alas, you just can’t take the big heart out of the little body!
Punto should never hit a ball higher than the waist
If he does, Gardy should make him run ’til he barfs. Really. No reason at all for LNP to ever hit the ball in the air more than, like, 10 feet before it hits the ground.
'Right now, I am going to urinate' -Tom Kelly
confused,
as that ball was high, but emminently catchable.

The Dazzel man was not to happy
that the error was charged to Morneauzie. Said it was a great throw. Dazzel not like be angry.

Magglio
I hope he plays everyday from here on out

Nice to see Duensing Fan Maggs
‘course, Maggs ain’t what he was, but what the heck.
'Right now, I am going to urinate' -Tom Kelly
when i left, we had two on
and didn’t score either? laaaaame.
What are we at the park for except to win? I'd trip my mother. I'd help her up, brush her off, tell her I'm sorry. But mother don't make it to third. -Leo Durocher
Some team should make an all Cabrera infield
1B – Miguel
2B – Asdrubal
SS – Orlando
Just need a 3B. Maybe even get Daniel Cabrera pitching

Won't work for the Twins
’Cause LNP would legally change his name to Punto Cabrera, and Gardy would play him.
'Right now, I am going to urinate' -Tom Kelly
Considering Duensing started 101 out of 106 minor league games,
maybe the Twins should try him in the rotation.
if I remember right,
Gardy said one more start for liriano, but then he backpeddled almost immediately and qualified that statement quite a bit.

seriously?
you didn’t……oh wait, what the heck? I seriously meant to type OUT. As he was out. No idea wherfe that came from
doesn't matter
as the Twins aren’t playing well enough to deserve it anyway.

Morneau misplayed a tough drive down the line,
Punto got his jersey dirty, threw home in time to get the 2nd runner, but the runner blocked the ump’s view of the tag.

ehh, he's ok.
Little more hustle and grittiness and we’ll see where he can go.

A couple more years like these
and he’ll make the locals forget George Mitterwald.

Back in the AL BA lead
except Itchy’s game is just starting.

Why do I continue to invest in this team? I could have a lot of fun with the rest of the year
if I just accepted we were not all that great. Having the M&M&Nathan make it hard though.
And the turribul AL Central. DAMMIT.

because being a Twins fan is fun
even when they are sucking it up. :)

his hot zone on CBS sportsline game tracker shows
he’s good when it’s right down the middle. Everywhere else, he sucks at the hitting.
Two runners left on....shocking from this team.
At least the lead was cut down.

Hey Fouljack, you think you got it bad?
I’m still at work, in the country, with no food. I’m getting hungry and still have a two hour drive to get home tonight.
Four times already I’ve said, I’ll just watchthough this AB by the good guys, if they dont get something I’m otta here! At this rate I’ll pull in the driveway at about 11:00pm.
I feel ya.
I am at work too, but have a 17 minute commute.
