Does Rios Help the White Sox
Rumor has it the White Sox have laid claim to the Alex Rios of the Toronto Blue Jays, Now all they have to do is working something out. Does this help the Sox. Peavy is also expected to make his White Sox debut on August 28th.. I think this could be a big move. It should bolster their offense. As a die hard Twins fan I do not like this move. We are getting OC and Pavano and the Sox are getting Peavy and Rios

I doubt the Sox have enough to get Rios.

If the Sox are on the hook for that contract it would be awesome.

Rios is having a down year to be sure,
but is likely still a very good player going forward, with a reasonable contract to boot (very unlike Vernon Wells). At least that’s what one of the better analytical minds in the game thinks —> http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/rios-wells/
I’d be very disappointed and a little shocked if the White Sox picked up Rios
He's one of the core in Toronto
JP is probably floating him out there like he did with Halladay. If he’s blown away, maybe. I just don’t see the White Sox being able to blow them away, not after giving up three of their top five pitching prospects for Peavy. Also, Williams has been regularly depleting the system to acquire veterans. It’s a weak system from which to draw.

Well if they just let him go then yeah it would be a good pickup for the Sox, but not if they have to give anything for him.
And those 2011-14 seasons are going to be murder for the White Sox

eh, maybe
If you think he’s started a steep decline in his age 28 season, then yeah. But I find it more likely he’s having some bad BABIP luck now, and is probably nearly worth his contract, considering he’s been worth $55.6 million the last three seasons.

True, but the White Sox wouldn’t get those three years worth of production, they get the future.
Also, they would presumably play him in center, correct? He doesn’t have a ton of time there, but I don’t think he will be a good CF. I kind of think he’s the type of guy who could be a 4 or 5 WAR guy, but could also absolutely collapse as well. In short, if the Sox get him for nothing good for them, if they give up something of value I wouldn’t be jumping for joy on the South side.
Also, this is a separate thought entirely, but after 2010, or maybe 2011, the Twins and possibly the Indians are going to rule the roost.

I hope you're right about the Twins ruling the roost
But right now the Twins aren’t inspiring any confidence in me for the future. I question whether we are really going to be able to fill Liriano and Perkins’ spots in the rotation with competent pitchers or if it is just going to be an experiment with minor leaguers in those spots like it’s been this year with Swarzak. And even if Swarzak works out, we still don’t have any pitchers that are dominating for long stretches of a season.
We have holes in the middle infield, a question in the outfield (can either Young or Gomez establish themselves as deserving of an everyday job?), an unknown at 3rd base, and a lack of depth in our starting rotation and bullpen. In addition, it looks like our farm system is more depleted now than it has been in recent years. If the Twins are going to improve themselves, they are going to have to make some trades this offseason or even dabble in free agency, which they don’t normally do. It should be an interesting offseason.
Yeah, I'm a little pessimistic too
The farm system is very mediocre, and too many black holes with the major league club. Things can turn around quick with an excellent GM at the helm (take a look at what’s happened with Seattle this year), but Bill Smith doesn’t inspire much confidence. And even if we should dabble in free agency, even decent values are hard to find on the good players.
They'll need to go outside for at least three jobs
1. Shortstop
2. Second base
3. Starting pitcher

I'm hoping they keep Orlando Cabrera
Mainly because I don’t think they are going to go after anyone better. Also, it would allow them to focus on their biggest two needs (pitching and 2nd base).
They should go after
somebody better! Perkins/Liriano need a change in scenery and if that means that they can shift him/them in a trade for a SS (aka Hardy/Escobar) then they really should do that.
However, that said, if they do not go after a tradeable SS this year (none of the FA SS interest me), then the Twins should keep Cabrera. We are already seeing the influence Cabrera has had on Gomez and maybe just starting to see Casilla come around (fingers crossed).

Alas,
the question is, “does he help them?”
I infer, probably correctly, that this means does he help them this year, not in 2011.
The answer: Of course.

Sure.
He’s better than the aging/limping hacks they have in their corner outfield spots now. Sox have to be thinking Quentin needs to take a seat. He’s just a loud out right now, and time’s a-wastin’.

UPDATE
White Sox acquire Rios from Blue Jays while giving up absolutely nothing in return. The White Sox take on all of Rios’ contract.
That's amazing
Even if he doesn’t help them much this year, he’s a huge upgrade for next year. Sure, he’s having a down year, but his OPS+ the three years prior to this are 120, 122, 111. If he bounces back, it’s a steal. If he doesn’t it’s only money.

hopefully
he sucks for the next 6 years and the Sox have to eat all of that money.
