Minor League Report...September 12, 2009

Today's report will be abbreviated as I am in Madison for the Badger-Fresno State game.  Fortunately, the minor league season is almost over so there isn't a lot of news.

Star-divide

There was some player movement, headed by the return of Francisco Liriano.  The Twins also added Justin Huber to their 40-man roster and recalled him from Rochester.  There is a dispute brewing between Glen Perkins and the Twins regarding his injury and being optioned to Rochester.  This move removed him from the active roster which would reduce his service time this season.  This move may cause him to miss Super-2 status and arbitration this winter.  The Twins also recalled Armando Gabino who will join Liriano in the Twins bullpen for the balance of the season.

In other moves, this year's twelfth round pick, Tony Davis moved from Elizabethton to New Britain for the playoffs with Angel Morales moving from Beloit to New Britain.  Tom Stuifbergen moved up to Ft. Myers from Elizabethton.

The regular season ended with five of the Twins seven teams making it to the playoffs.  The DSL Twins made it to the championship round where they lost to the Giants.  The GCL Twins lost the GCL single game playoff for the second straight year, this time to the Nationals.  The Elizabethton Twins played Danville in the Appy League Championship Series for the fifth straight season.  After having won three of the previous four, they lost this year.

This week Ft. Myers opened their playoff run with a best of three against Charlotte, a team they had beat 14 of 20 times this year.  FSL Pitcher of the Year David Bromberg got the start in game one, and he wasn't at his best as he allowed 10 hits and 7 runs in 5.2 innings with 4K/4BB.  In somewhat of a surprise move to me, Steven Hirschfield came on in relief and pitched 2.1 shutout innings with 3 hits and 1 strikeout which allowed the Miracle to get back into the game for a 8-7 win.  Joe Testa pitched a shutout ninth inning for the save.  The hitting stars were Estarlin De Los Santos, who was 3-5 with a triple, home run and 4 RBI.  Joe Benson was 3-4 with a double and home run.

The Miracle lost game two on Wednesday, 7-4, when Tyler Robertson allowed 9 hits and 6 runs in 3.1 innings.  Boof Bonser came on to pitch 2.0 perfect innings with 4 strikeouts.  Nick Romero was 1-1 with a walk and 3 run home run.  The Miracle's season came to a sudden end in game three, 3-2, behind a solid start by Santos Arias.  Arias pitched 5.0 innings with only 4 hits, 3 runs (2 earned) and 3K/4BB.  Bobby Lanigan, who recently moved up from Beloit, pitched 4.0 one-hit innings without allowing a run.  Ben Revere was 2-3 with 2 RBI while catcher Jair Fernandez also had 2 hits.  The Miracle had an excellent year, winning both halves of their season.  Although they didn't advance to the championship series as they had last year, they must be congratulated for their accomplishments.

The New Britain Rock Cats faced an uphill battle as they squared off against the Division champion Connecticut Defenders in the first round of the Eastern League playoffs.  The Cats roster was hit hard with three players leaving for the World Cup (Rene Tosoni, Luke Hughes and Loek Van Mil).  To make matters worse, I read that the Defenders didn't lose anyone from a team that took 16 of 20 in head-to-head competition with the Cats this season.

Their best of five series began at Connecticut on Wednesday, where the Cats lost 6-2 behind Deolis Guerra.  Guerra allowed 8 hits and 5 runs in 4.0 innings with 4K/3BB.  Cole DeVries came on to pitch 3.0 innings of shutout relief with 3 hits and 6K/1BB.  Carlos Gutierrez allowed a run in his inning of relief.  Brian Dinkelman hit a home run while Erik Lis, Yangervis Solarte and Wilson Ramos all had one hit.  Matt Fox got the start in game two and didn't fair any better as the Cats went down 10-7 before returning to New Britain for game three.  Fox allowed 6 hits and 6 runs in 4.0 innings.  Kyle Waldrop, who had been as good as one can get all season, allowed 3 runs in an inning of relief.  Spencer Steedley and Alex Burnett each pitched a shutout inning of relief with Burnett getting 3 strikeouts.  Wilson Ramos was the hitting star of the night for the Cats with a 4-5 night with a double, home run, 2 runs scored and 4 RBI.  Ramon Santana, who was promoted from Beloit for the playoffs, was 3-5 with a run and RBI while Whit Robbins and Steve Singleton had 2 hits each.  The Cats game three was rained out last night.  They will send Ryan Mullins to the hill later today as they try to stay alive for another day.

There has been much written during the last few months that the Twins minor league system is in the bottom third of baseball.  Personally, sending five of seven teams to the playoffs tells me that those rankings are somewhat suspect.

The Twins organization has ten players in the World Cup (more than any other organization) with several playing key roles during the first few days of competition.  Liam Hendriks got the start for Australia in game one versus the Czech Republic.  Hendriks pitched 3.0 shutout innings in a 17-4 win for the Aussies.  Luke Hughes was 1-5 with a run scored, RBI, walk and double while James Beresford was 1-6.  The Aussies beat Taipei 7-5 yesterday with Brad Tippett and Matt Williams each pitching for the Australians.  Tippett allowed 3 hits and 3 runs in his inning while Williams allowed 3 hits and 2 runs in 1.2 innings.  Luke Hughes was 0-4, however, James Beresford was 4-5 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI.  After having a wonderful season in Beloit, this 20 year old middle infielder certainly has put himself onto the Twins radar as someone to watch over the next few seasons.

Nelvin Fuentes pitched 1.1 inning, allowing 1 hit, 1 run and 2K/0BB in Puerto Rico's 10-0 loss to Cuba.

Canada beat South Korea, 9-1, with Rene Tosoni going 0-3 with 2 walks and a run scored.  Last night, Canada beat the Netherland Antilles 15-0 with Tosoni going 3-5 with 2 runs scored, 2 RBI, a double and a home run.

The USA stands at 1-1 following a 13-9 loss to Venezuela and 9-1 win over Germany.  Trevor Plouffe was 0-4 with 2 walks against Venezuela.  He returned with a 2-5 game last night with 2 runs scored, a RBI, home run and 1 error.

Finally, Yohan Pino closed out his season with his second start for Columbus against Toledo.  Pino pitched 7.0 shutout innings with 5 hits and 6K/2BB.  In two games for the Indians AAA affiliate, Pino pitched 14.0 innings with 2 runs, 14K/2BB for a 2-0 record.  He closed out his AAA season with a 4-2 record, 2.49ERA, 65.0 innings, 0.95WHIP and 58K/13BB.

Thats it for today, enjoy the last few weeks of the Twins season.

Rock Cats extend Connecticut to game 4...

…The Rock Cats took game three, 6-1, behind Ryan Mullins pitching 6.2 innings with 4 hits, 1 run and 5K/2BB. Kyle Waldrop finished the seventh to get Mullins out of a bit of a jam. Alex Burnett, who is becomming the top closer in the organization, pitched the final two innings allowing 1 hit with 5 strikeouts. Burnett, who has been adjusting to the closer role since Anthony Slama’s promotion at mid-season, has now pitched 3.0 innings in this series with with one hit and 8 strikeouts.

Wilson Ramos continued with his hot bat, going 2-4. But the big hitting star was all-star Brian Dinkelman who had two home runs and 3 RBI. Whit Robbins also had a three run home run. Game 4 will be played this afternoon in New Britain. The Cats will be sending Michael McCardell to the mound. If they extend the series to game 5, it will be played at Connecticut’s home park.

A ray of sunshine

On an otherwise depressing moment in Twinsville. Its nice to see some guys playing like ‘elite’ prospects. Wow, Ramos is ready for the bigs! Lets see, now we can trade Joe Mauer for say, the entire Pittsburgh Pirates farm system. With Burnett ready, we can trade Joe Nathan to Oakland, not because they need him, just because Billy Beane would want to have him in order to trade later. And Dinkelman—plug him into 2B tomorrow. Today!

Rock Cats season ends...

…The Cats dropped game four yesterday, 2-0. Michael McCardell had a short start, pitching 2.2 innings with 3 hits, 0 runs and 4K/3BB. Spencer Steedley allowed a run in 0.2 innings. Alex Burnett pitched the ninth inning with all zeros…however, didn’t have any strikeouts.

Whit Robbins was 2-3 to finish the series with a .500 Average. Wilson Ramos was 0-4 to finish at .412.

A great season for the New Britain fans as the Cats finally gave them a chance to see some playoff baseball. Congrats to the entire team and organization!

"Minor league system is in the bottom third of baseball"

I agree. The bottom third seems low.
But our problem is a lack of stars. We have a bunch of guys who are projected as utility / subs, or back of the rotation/relievers. Several seem to be just above the status of “just another guy.” Most of our prospects have flaws in fielding, arms, attitude, hitting. power etc.
In the next 2 years I don’t think we will have a front line starter coming up.
In the next 2 years I don’t think we will have an all star position player coming up. (Maybe Ramos is an exception)

Hopefully 2011 we will see some light with Morales and Hicks almost here but we will still need some of our young pitchers to step it up.
 - It be great if Hunt could figure out how to throw a strike!

Lack of stars

Pitching aside, I’d say that’s true for the top two tiers of the org (AAA and AA). Ramos is the only true star at the top two levels. Valencia projects as a solid player with an upside around league average for third basemen. Otherwise, there’s a lot of bench talent there. But there is some star power in A ball that’s about to break through to the AA level: Revere, Parmelee, Morales, Hicks. The problems is, they’re all outfielders. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems there’s not a future infield star in the organization.

The future Nick Punto is Toby Gardenhire. The only man Gardy loves more than Punto is his own son.

We are forgetting one AA star...

…Rene Tosoni could become a star and should be ready for the Twins sometime after September of next year. The Twins have moved him very fast (which isn’t normal for this organization) and he has adjusted each year as he did this year. So he and Ramos means that they have two position players at AA who could/should be the real thing!

I also expect that at least one of the three great relievers (Slama, Delaney, Burnett) should become a big time major league late inning reliever. As for middle infielders…I must agree that I don’t see anyone that can become a star. Could there be a slick fielder shortstop who can hit .260 or so, maybe Yancarlos Ortiz.

by roger13 on Sep 15, 2009 7:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Seth...

…has told me that Slama isn’t eligible for the Rule V draft this year. That explains why the Twins haven’t pushed him to the big league roster this year with a Sept callup. He was drafted in ‘06, but as a draft & follow wasn’t playing until ’07.

Twins happy with the bullpen now

Gardy said they’re fine with a Nathan/Guerrier/Mijares/Rauch/Crain/Mahay bullpen. I don’t see Mahay returning but I see Perkins or Liriano getting put in the pen next season. If not them, then Duensing will be in the bullpen as the 2nd lefty. You might see Slama, Delaney and Burnett all in the Rochester bullpen at the end of next season. I expect at least one of them to become Jesse Crain, I’m not ready to anoint them as future closers.

by DJL44 on Sep 15, 2009 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Bullpen

Mahay will take the free agent walk, I’m sure, and test the lefty-always-finds-job market. The Twins also have Boof and Neshek in the mix. Neshek might have to start the season at Rochester.

Pictrue that Slama will be a spring training invitee as the Twins dn’t need to 40-man him.

Wonder where Swarzak stands in the pecking order. Who will start at Rochester in 2010.

Perkins is a big question mark. Does he still have options? Not tradable right now, sadly.

Is Gabino another two-game wonder? He’ll get another chance, if its a big blowout, I imagine. Becoming the perfect player-to-be-named later.

Be interesting to see what AAAA guys the Twins go after for the pitching staff. Looks like a complete house-cleaning at Rochester pretty much (Lahey, anyone). Is Lugo still a prospect for the Twins or will he get Rule 5ived again!

The Dickey-era ahs probably passed!

also that is why Slama wasn't promoted to AAA sooner

Because thankfully now he doesn’t have to be put on the 40 man roster !!!

(although he still may be)

Deolis Guerra = Daniel Cabrera ?
I tend to think so

Good point

Forgot about him. I just wish there were more potential stars in the middle infield. That was devastated by injuries with Paul Kelley and Drew Thomspon plus the disappointing play of Trevor Plouffe. That’s two second rounders and a first rounder who haven’t panned out. Plouffe might a a useful replacement-level player comparable to Tolbert. But not the star you expect to get when you draft a high school player in the first round.

Tosoni

I keep forgetting this guy.
Not sure why. Hopefully he keeps his name in my face all next year.

by clutterheart on Sep 16, 2009 8:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Tosoni...

…I am very early in the process of grading all the minor league position players. I may find a surprise or two, but right now it looks like Tosoni may grade out as the #1 player in the organization with Revere a point behind. There is a total logjam of about 5 or 6 players another two points back, including Ramos, Peterson, Huber and Winfree with Morales and Valencia another point behind them. Key is that I have only graded out about a quarter of the players…so a lot left to do.

Prospect

At what point does a player not be a prospect. At-bats, time in the majors (I think of Swarzak, Duensing, Huber…even Morales now).

Prospect or not

Everyone has a different cutoff but you’re definitely not a prospect if you’re not eligible for Rookie of the Year anymore.

by DJL44 on Sep 18, 2009 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Fromal definition of a non-prospect

According to the MLB

A rookie [is] formally defined as a player with less than 130 at-bats, a pitcher with less than 50 innings pitched, or anyone with less than 45 days on any Major League roster.

Cross Swarzak off then

Also Duensing. Same with Morales (>45 days). I think Morales could be the best trade chit in the organization. Milwaukee needs a catcher, the Twins need a backup catcher, not another starter. Morales and Blackburn (or Perkins or Liriano) for Hardy?

Prospect recap

What’s the timetable for an updated prospect top 40 list?

by DJL44 on Sep 15, 2009 1:41 PM EDT reply actions

Seth usually does that in winter....

…but I have begun working on my year end rankings based on player performance. Have the preliminary work completed with several surprises in the Top 10….Alex Burnett (#1), David Bromberg (#2), Anthony Slama (#3), Joe Testa (#4), Steve Hirschfield (#5), Anthony Swarzak (#6), Kyle Waldrop (#7), Rob Delaney (#8), Santos Arias (#9) and Armando Gabino (#10).

Was also surprised that four GCL Twins (Hermsen, Salcedo, Lobanov and Gonzalez) were in the second twenty, which should give us some hope for Elizabethton and Beloit the next year or two.

by roger13 on Sep 15, 2009 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions

5 bullpen guys?

That does not bode well for the future.
No wonder they say we are in the bottom third.

by clutterheart on Sep 16, 2009 8:49 AM EDT up reply actions

I look at it different...

…that we have five very good guys who happen to be relievers, five pitchers who performed as well this year as players anywhere in minor league ball. To me that is a sign that we should again have a pool of relievers ready to join this club beginning sometime next summer.

And what is most interesting is that perhaps the best reliever isn’t in this group because he was at low rookie ball…Lobanov (was ranked #17). It is important to remember clutterheart that my ratings are done based on my analysis of their performance during the past season. Isn’t meant to be a prospect ranking, although there certainly is some correlation between past and future performance.

by roger13 on Sep 16, 2009 9:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Are these just your pitcher ratings?

Or are you saying 12 out of the top 17 players (just the ones you mentioned) are all pitchers? Makes the loss of Mulvey, Pino, even Morlan (how’s he done, anyway) a lot more sensible.

by Han Joelo on Sep 16, 2009 9:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes,

I rank pitchers and position players separately. So all of the above relates to just pitchers. Haven’t started working on my ranking of position players yet. Should get that started this weekend and expect to have it done sometime late next week.

what about Michael McCardell and Ty Robertson ?

they both have to be top 40 overall prospects in our system…. rather easily….

Deolis Guerra = Daniel Cabrera ?

McCardell...

…was hurt a bit by a few bad outings in AA. Overall he had a very nice year, but his numbers at AA caused him to drop to #21. Tyler Robertson was coming back from his injury and improved as the year went on to end with a ranking of #20.
