Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Fire Joe Vavra

This will mark the second season since 1989 that the Twins will finish above the league average in walks

In the 12 games since Morneau went down the Twins have 48 walks, or 4 per game. That’s a 13 percent increase in walks from before Morny's stress fracture, or as some like to erroneously call it to dramatize the situation, "a broken back."

Observant followers have known throughout the season that this edition of the Twins has been more patient than any Twins’ team in recent memory. Those same fans have noted even more patience since Morneau went down.

Whipping boy Nick Punto has a .500-plus OBP in the past seven days and more than .420 for the past month.

What is the team now? 16-3 without Morneau in the starting lineup this year?

That’s a good lesson for the "trade Cuddyer," "trade Delmon," "trade Gomez," folks, although folks like that tend to forget real quick. With someone like Jason Tyner as a spare part, a team is screwed when a daily player goes down. But with the extra talent, no such problem. Big-league teams don’t win with Jason Tyners as spare parts.

There’s no such thing as a "crowded outfield" situation or "too many starting pitchers."

Joe Vavra’s name not even mentioned in the post. Just a random rant about several unrelated things.

Your point is…. what exactly?

Are you feeling OK?

I'm not sure how firing Joe Vavra makes anymore sense than

those stating Morneau has a broken back or the “trade player X” statements, but maybe that’s your point.

by Jesse on Sep 27, 2009 11:08 AM EDT reply actions

Really though, JS, what do you have against Morneau?

Should he have not played so well when he was healthy so his numbers didn’t drop so dramatically? Would you have preferred that? Or maybe he shouldn’t have played the game hard; that certainly would have helped his back. Hmmm, you’re right, now that I think about it. Morneau is such a hack and useless player for the Twins to have.

In this single case,

I think he’s mostly saying that it’s nice to have offensive depth to be able to cover Morneau’s absence. At least that’s what I’ve taken away from it. Which flies in the face of the Twins-Still-Lose-With-Morneau theory we’ve heard about from Johnny recently.

Or I’m just making it up as I go.

by Jesse on Sep 27, 2009 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

You were really able to pull that away from there?

Your brain is more adept than mine, I see. :)

i think so too

that was my interpretation as well. He’s saying that the depth we have is important.

Still, I’m not totally sure I agree. The problem is that, as a team, we don’t have great depth. We have adequate depth in the OF, and I guess at SP, if you compare to league average. I agree that you can’t have “too many” OF or SP, but we don’t have decent first string options at 2B, or 3B, and SS was a hole until we got Cabrera, who really isn’t that strong of a player.

You can win with someone like Tyner, if the rest of your positions are filled with quality. It is a waste to have your talent backing up your other talent.

I think the fact that people have to really work to

see, Johnny's so smart, he's analogies are even over our heads.

Twins more patient = Vavra doing his job, + foolish fans calling for Vavra’s head = Irony

in the same way that foolish fans calling for the org. to trade Young or Gomez or Cuddyer is ironic now that Morneau is hurt.

Unfortunately, he isn’t as smart as he would like us all to believe as his analogy falls apart.

He recognizes it, so he hides it through a bait and switch, and subtle deception, all the while calling people who would disagree with his opinuions foolish, even before they’ve had an opportunity to open their mouths (or punch their keyboard).

He recognizes it so he resorts to propping up players that he has previously been ruthlessly dismissive of in the past (see nate below), ignoring his own hypocrisy all the while calling others out for his perception of their hypocrisy.

See, Delmon hasn’t been that good since coming to the Twins, and Gomez hasn’t been much better, and poor Johnny (who has trashed both before) has to resort to propping them up today to try and make his strained analogy. And poor Johnny has to resort to ruthlessly dismissing Jason Tyner, a man who hasn’t been here for two years instead of invoking Pridie, or Kubel as the team’s two actual backup OF who are more than passable, and capable of being the backup OF for a world championship team.

Poor Johnny. He outsmarted himself with his vinegar tongue and foul ‘Ed-Begleyness’

Poor, poor troll.

"folks like that tend to forget real quick."

Lucky for us, Johnny’s statements get archived. And guess what? This isn’t the first time he’s mentioned Delmon Young and Jason Tyner in the same post. Turns out the people he’s tearing down are… himself?!?

We’re almost two weeks into May and Delmon Young’s OB% is higher than his slugging average. And both are well under Jason Tyner’s ’07 numbers.

For those of you scoring at home, Delmon’s first half of this season has been worse than the first half of the ’07 for Jason Tyner. Or the second half of the ’07 season for Jason Tyner. That’s right: Jason Tyner was a better baseball player in 2007 than Delmon Young is now. Yew.

Thanks to baseball achieving what Pete Rozelle envisioned for the NFL decades ago, parity the Twinks have been able to overcome an outfield that has been potholed bi-monthly (Cuddyer’s finger, Span’s inner ear problem, the death of Delmon Young’s mother, plus his inability to understand he’s supposed to be a big-league hitter).

(Ripping down Delmon in the same sentence you mention his mom died? Classy to a fault, Johnny. But hey, the people who merely wanted to trade Delmon are fairweather fans huh?)

This team hasn’t got much personality, and working the robotic Delmon into the lineup isn’t going to change it.

Except, much like JS, you missed the point

By not reading the post. He’s now calling Delmon “talent” to suit his current needs. He cherry picks stats and has a selective memory. The “Fire Joe Vavra” title was meant to be controversial, and attract folks to this post. This is really another (poorly disguised) attack on Justin Morneau, a recurring theme of his.

He is a classic flamer and a troll. His whole raison d’être is to get people upset and angry.

Yes

The real difference is that Delmon is hitting a lot more fly balls than he was, some of which are going over the fence. Unless you’re really fast, it’s tough to hit a ground ball homer.

Even the 447 foot homer is discredite by the writer

“Hit tracker says it was greatly influenced by wind and temperature.”

How many 450 foot wind-blown homers have you seen?

In short, the writer formed his opinion and selected stats that support it, even if the stats are basically meaningless.

I could see using it in some cases...

…to complement park factors as a way of predicting future performance. But you don’t use it to invalidate past performances. That’s like saying: “Well, Santana does get a lot of strikeouts, but analyzing the strikeouts, it seems he barely missed bats and he got the benefit of a lot of close calls from the umpire.”

Blind Willie McTell

Wow. I had no idea I was THAT consistent about ol’ Del. Thanks for going back and reading all my stuff. An enviable enjoyment for you.

But what are we going to do about these meager reading and comprehension skills of yours, RoomTemp? It’s a chronic problem.

Note the " ’s " here, which serves as “is”: Young’s an awful ballplayer.

It doesn’t say “will always be.” It’s present tense.

I wrote the some five months ago when it was true. The landscape changes fast in the big leagues. I’m not someone like Mathewson, who tenaciously clings to the same “chapter and verse” refrains, such as his favorite: claiming Ron Gardenhire “hates rookies,” even though it’s been disproven.

(Of course, ol’ RoomTemp couldn’t even name the three rookies Gardy started in a crucial game recently. Yikes.)

Baseball is a game of changes, and 6 good weeks can make a guy’s season look good. So it is with Delmon.

However, he still is an awful player.

Oh, heck, let’s mitigate that, given his improved recent OPS (an OPS worse than Nick Punto’s recent OPS, but an improved one still): Delmon is a little less awful these days. He’s not as bad a Jason Tyner anymore, but then no one expected that to continue (there’s that “game of changes” theme, RoomTemp. Make a note of that.)

Being a wise baseball man, I was never so stupid as some here. I said Del was awful. And he’s still awful. Or pretty close to it. Don’t you watch the games?

But I didn’t suggest trading or, in one case, releasing Delmon. That’s because I’m a smart boy, and I can see that he’s blessed with some talent. Oh, no, he can’t run as well as Tyner or cover the same amount of ground, but he has way more offensive potential. He sure does pepper the ball around the whole playing field, doesn’t he? Maybe the power will come next.

The guy sure can’t run bases. See that “slide” into third the other night? Remindful of Pedro Guerrero during one really bad day in spring training.

Can’t field. People run on him all the time and still he’s maybe got five assists this year. Lots of times you’ll see outfielders with bad judgment and good arms pile up assists, but Delmon can’t even do that.

Even at awful, or nearly awful, Del’s a way better option than Jason Tyner offensively. Never said he wasn’t, though, did I. But you’re not much for context. Darn those old feeblie comprehension skills anyway, huh, RoomTemp?

Thanks for reading my Fanposts, though I’m sure you enjoyed them as much as I enjoy reading Less Cowgirl, Moreneu’s FanPosts. Oh, that’s right: He’s never written a Fanpost. Oops. My mistake. After 2,000 comments he’s finally written one. He’s gonna catch up to your 3 pretty soon.

Four Fanposts from you two? We call that “following,” and man, no one follows my stuff more than you, RoomTemp.

Keep a-readin’.

The last sentence is definitely true

There is not such thing as too much talent, especially for pitchers. There is such a thing as an overabundance at some spots that can be traded to fill weaknesses elsewhere, which can be a more efficient and effective allocation of resources.

Really, all of the paragraphs but one in his article are just weird little facts, which I think are interesting. It is very very strange how well this team has played without Morneau this year. A big part of it has been Cuddyer went off the last couple weeks, but it went on before too. It’s a definite statistical anomaly with this team.

One more other thing

Why would the author not discuss his post?

People have questions and the author is a no show. Isn’t that the first sign of a Troll?

by clutterheart on Sep 28, 2009 12:23 PM EDT reply actions

definitely has nothing to do with being a troll

Not commenting on your own post is irrelevant. Also, I’m sure he’s reading everyone’s responses and enjoying it.

I’m sure there is a better definition for a troll out there, but my problem is with people posting content that isn’t related to the topic, or is advertising. If you post anything that gets 50 responses and some debate, I think you can call it constructive.

by snolls on Sep 28, 2009 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

You're confusing spam with trolling...

There’s nothing constructive about this thread. The rant at the top had nothing to do with the title. The rants in the second paragraph had nothing to do with the rants in the first paragraph. Walk rate and Morneau’s injury? Justin has been out a few weeks and he still leads the team in walks. None of it together makes any sense at all.

a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion

Now, we’re a small group here and the 50+ responses are mainly people making the best of the situation by just mocking him. There’s no debate here. His lack of responses just proves he didn’t actually believe anything he said. For a small board, things can be handled this way… makes it kinda fun. But on larger boards people like this eventually get banned because there’s too many newbies around who will unwittingly take him seriously which disrupts the whole board and not just a small handful of “troll threads”.
