Painting A Picture: Possible Twins-Tigers Outcomes
Breaking it down to all that matters: wins and losses.
Two games down with seven games left isn't a horrible, unscaleable wall...but it's not far off. With that in mind I wanted to make it clear what each scenario through four games in Detroit would mean to the Twins.
| Series Result | Twins Record | Tigers Record | Twins GB | Final Series Implications |
| Twins Sweep | 85 - 74 | 83 - 76 | + 2.0 | Any combination Twins wins or Tigers losses leading to two = Twins AL Central Champions |
| Twins Win 3 | 84 - 75 | 84 - 75 | TIE | The better team wins; Twins need to win one more than Detroit over the final three games of the year; game 163 possible. |
| Series Split | 83 - 76 | 85 - 74 | - 2.0 | Twins need to sweep Royals; Tigers must lose two (enter game 163) or get swept (Twins win AL Central). |
| Tigers Win 3 | 82 - 77 | 86 - 73 | - 4.0 | Twins eliminated. |
| Tigers Sweep | 81 - 78 | 87 - 72 | - 6.0 | Twins eliminated. |
This is going to be one helluva week. Let's go Twins!

I should point out
that in the case of a series split, game 163 could come about if the Twins only take two from the Royals. The Tigers would still need to get swept, however.

Yikes.
Today’s loss really hurt. The odds are still looking pretty think. Thanks for the breakdown.
I always loved that one.

Almost forgot!
Big thank you to Ozzie and the CWS for slapping the Tigers back down and winning the series!

Three wins are a must
I can’t see the Twins gaining two games after splitting with the Tigers. They control their own destiny as long as they only lose one game or less to the Tigers.
Interesting until the end, I hope!

Ahhh!
Less than 3 games this week and we might as well call it a season…aka: a series split isn’t good enough. We can’t rely on other teams to beat the Tigers for us to win anymore. It’s pretty much do or die, which is exciting, but has the potential for a lot of heartbreak this week.

Dear Royals
please don’t let Greinke make his final start. Thanks.

After what has been a mediocre season
to go on a run like this and be able to get “big game” experience for our young players, is about as good as it gets for the Twins.
I ain’t giving up, but, even though Detroit is not playing their best baseball right now, they still play well enough at home to outflank the Twins and win a couple of games.
Then again, there is that crack in the door, and if a team is brash enough to rush into the room and believe they belong, anything can happen.

Pretty close to the way I see it
The Twins are certainly underdogs and should be. A split will do no good, but at least the Tigers would not clinch in front of the Twins. Three of four and it is a new ballgame with only three games to go.
In this season long war of attrition, the Tigers have more weapons left than the Twins. The have a better starting staff, a functional bullpen, and a successful closer. The Twins lost their top power hitter, two or three starters, and their infield has blown up. I couldn’t imagine that the Twins would be in the race in the last week with an infield of Cuddyer, Punto, O-Cab, and Tolbert.
The Twins are playing well and they have a chance. The Tigers have their two best pitchers going Monday and Tuesday. If the Twins win one, they still have a chance, if they win both, they have a bit of an advantage.
It should be fun!

I agree with everything but the bullpen comment. I think we have an advatage there.

I'm still convinced that the Twins are a better team
and have been all year. They’ve shot themselves in the foot on numerous occasions this year and have faced as much adversity as any other team.
I won’t say they got cheated if they don’t make it in the end because they’ve earned their failures this year. But I won’t be surprised if they win the division and I’ll have no doubt in my mind that the best team won the division.
That may say more about the division than either the Twins or the Tigers though. I’d still take it.

I already know...
Who’s going to break our heart this year. Placido Polanco. That pesky f#@%er will be the death of us.
And seriously, what is up with that dude’s head? It’s all f’ed up and misshapen. He is a phrenologists’s wet dream…

Aint nothin to it but to do it

Fix is in?
If the White Sox had swept Detroit I would have sworn someone paid them to throw the Twins series.

Nobody's been playing worse than the ChiSox
If you were trying to throw a game, that would be how you do it – don’t field.

let’s pay the Royals 100,000 or so to not pitch Greinke

Reminds me of that year that Torii gave KC a present for beating Detroit
It was sort of a joke, but the league office didn’t approve. He had to take the gift back.

All we need to do is win the series.
If we take 3 out of 4, we’ll be all tied up, and I like our chances over the Royals a lot better than the Tigers over the Bitch Sox.
