Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

Minor League Report...September 5, 2009

As summer ends and the leaves begin to change colors, the Twins organization also changed following three exciting weeks.  With three teams in the playoffs, the organization managed to win only 15 games while picking up 24 losses.  The DSL Twins championship run came to an end in the DSL finals while the GCL Twins lost their one game playoff for a second straight year.  The Elizabethton Twins were two and out against the Danville Braves who they played for the League Championship each of the last five years, winning three of the five series.

Star-divide

There was a lot of movement this week, mostly connected to filling the New Britain roster that has been depleted by players leaving for the World Cup.  Matt Tolbert was called up by the Twins yesterday, joining the team in time for last night's game against Cleveland.  Brian Buscher was also recalled by the Twins earlier in the week.  One injury that I missed last week is that David Winfree was placed on the disabled list by the Red Wings.  Jeff Christy moved up to the the Red Wings to replace Jose Morales who was called up by the Twins.  R. A. Dickey was designated for assignment to create a spot on the 40-man roster for Ron Mahay.  Dickey cleared waivers and remained with the Red Wings.

Seth Stohs is reporting that two members of the DSL Twins (Jose Murillo and Francisco Nunez) were suspended for 50 games.  Yangervis Solarte completed his rehab assignment and was assigned to New Britain with Ramon Santana also joining New Britain following an excellent season at Beloit.  Zach See was added to the Ft. Myers bullpen following the GCL Twins playoff game.  The Florida State League named Jeff Smith, Manager of the Year; David Bromberg, Pitcher of the Year; and Chris Parmalee and Ben Revere as All-Stars.  The Twins also announced that Glen Perkins completed his rehab stint in Florida and was "optioned to the Rochester Red Wings."  This is odd because it means that Perkins would be using one of his three option years for a few days with the Red Wings.  One would have expected that he would have been activated and assigned to Rochester on a rehab assignment.  If the news released by the Twins is accurate, it doesn't make a lot of sense from a player management perspective.

Rochester Red Wings (AAA) (4-3, 69-71, 3rd place, -10.5 games)

Much like last year, the Wings are playing out their season with a goal of getting back to .500.  They had four big wins this week with different pitchers having solid starts in three of them.  Jason Jones pitched 8.0 innings with 2 runs in Saturday's 5-2 win over Buffalo.  Armando Gabino was solid in Tuesday's 9-6 win, pitching 6.0 innings with 4 runs.  R.A. Dickey also allowed 4 runs in 7.0 innings in Thursday's 6-4 win.  Anthony Swarzak struggled in his return to Rochester, allowing 8 hits, 3 walks and 4 runs in 2.1 innings last Sunday...a game the Wings would come back and win 5-4 in ten innings.  Swarzak pitched very well in last night's 7-3 loss, pitching 6.0 innings with 5 hits and 3 runs (2 earned).    The top pitching performance this week was from closer Anthony Slama who picked up 3 saves in 3 games, pitching 5.0 innings with only 1 hit and 8K/1BB...dropping his ERA to 3.46 with 17K/5BB in 13.0 innings since his promotion from New Britain.

Two of the team's best hitters this week were Jason Pridie and Trevor Plouffe.  Pridie was 13-33 with a home run, 4 runs scored and 7 RBI...raising his average to .265/.293/.386 in 498 at bats with 67 runs scored and 23 stolen bases in 29 attempts.  Prior to leaving for the World Cup, Trevor Plouffe was 6 for 11 in three games with a double, triple and his tenth home run.  Plouffe ended his season hitting .260/.313/.407 in 430 at bats with 26 errors as the Red Wing's regular shortstop this season.

New Britain Rock Cats (AA) (4-4, 70-68, 2nd place, -12.0 games)

The Rock Cats remain in the hunt for a second place finish which would put them into the Eastern League Playoffs.  They began their week with a three game lead over Trenton with four games against Trenton to begin the week followed by a three game series with Reading before closing out the season with another four games against Trenton.  The Cats dropped three of four against Trenton on Saturday thru Monday, losing 6-5 (Cole DeVries lasted only 2.1 innings with 5 hits and 5 runs), 2-1 (Ryan Mullins pitched 4.2 innings with 5 hits and 2 runs) and 4-2 (Matt Fox was strong, allowing only 2 runs in 7.0 innings on 6 hits).  Their one win, 5-3, was behind a 4.2 inning start by Deolis Guerra who allowed 5 hits and 1 run.  With their lead down to one game, the Cats moved on to take two of three from Reading, extending their lead to two games as they enter their season ending series.  The big game in the Reading series was a 2-0 win on Tuesday by Michael McCardell who pitched 7.0 innings of shutout ball with 5 hits and 8K/3BB.  The only loss to Reading, 3-1, was a game DeVries started and pitched very well (5.2 innings, 5 hits, 3 runs (2 earned) and 5K/2BB).  Carlos Gutierrez came on to pitch 2.1 shutout innings of relief with 2 hits and 2K/0BB.  Since giving him extra rest, Gutierrez looks a lot more like the dominant pitcher we saw earlier this season in Ft. Myers.

The Cats got a solid start from Deolis Guerra last night as they beat Trenton 8-7, stretching their lead to two games with three head-to-head games remaining.  Guerra pitched 6.0 innings with 6 hits and 5 runs while picking up a lot of support from Wilson Ramos, All-Star Brian Dinkelman and newcomer Ramon Santana.  Ramos was 3-5 with a run scored, double and 2 RBI...giving him a team high .318/.343/.446 which would be the fourth highest average in the league if he had enough at bats to qualify.  With the team in the midst of a playoff run, Ramos has been hitting .395Average in his last ten games.  Dinkelman was 2-5 with a run scored and double and his .298/.386/.444 puts him amongst the league's ten best hitters.  Ramon Santana was 2-5 with 2 runs scored in his first game in AA.  Eric Lis has been battling a bad back, however, returned with a 3-4 night with a home run in Wednesday's 11-6 win.  Lis leads the Cats with 17 home runs and is second to Rene Tosoni with 66 RBI.

If the Rock Cats can take one of three from Trenton, they will begin the playoffs against the division champion Connecticut Defenders.  We all know that anything can happen once you reach the playoffs, however, the Cats have lost 16 of their 20 games with the Defenders this year.  Maybe they are due to have some good fortune should they meet them again next week?

Ft. Myers Miracle (Hi-A) (3-3, 37-30, 1st place, +3.0 games)

The Miracle clinched the second half championship, making them league champs for both halves of this season.  After their regular season ends on Sunday, they begin the playoffs with a best of three game series against second place Charlotte.  The Miracle had identical 7-3 records against Charlotte in both the first and second halves, including taking 3 of 4 two weeks ago.

The FSL Pitcher of the Year, David Bromberg, began this week with a 5.0 inning start with 3 hits, 1 run and 8K/2BB in a 2-1 win against Jupiter.  Bromberg picked up his fourth loss (13 wins) Thursday, pitching 5.0 innings with 6 hits and 3 runs.  Although David Bromberg is the league's Pitcher of the Year, Steven Hirschfield may have been their best pitcher since the all-star break with a 2.46ERA in 80.1 innings with 60K/20BB.  Hirschfield was the loser, 2-1 on Wednesday when he pitched 6.1 innings with 4 hits and 2 runs (1 earned).

Ben Revere is closing out this season strong, hitting .395Average in his last ten games as he battles for a league batting championship.  Revere, .311/.371/.367, currently trails Logan Schafer of Brevard County who is hitting .313/.367/.448.  Revere has taken 39 walks with only 33 strikeouts in 460 at bats while swiping 44 bases in 61 attempts.  As the season comes to an end, Chris Parmalee is tied for second in the home run race (16), two behind the league leader.  Parmalee is also one short in the RBI race with 73.  Although my pre-season prediction could be two-thirds wrong (that his home run total would lead the Miracle, lead the FSL and set a Miracle record), Parmalee has had a wonderful season with a .811OPS.

Beloit Snappers (A) (2-5, 27-40, 7th place, -14.5 games)

The Snappers season will soon end, a season that is certainly disappointing for many of the young stars from last year's Appy League champs.  There haven't been a lot of high spots this season, yet, several of the organization's top prospects took steps forward in their development.  Included in this group is Angel Morales, who struggled mightily at the start of the season, however, made the adjustments by hitting .310/.361/.517 since the all-star break.  After two very disappointing seasons for former second round pick Danny Rams, he earned a promotion to Beloit where he began hitting like a future star.  He cooled as the season wore down, yet, hit 7 home runs and 14 doubles in only 168 at bats as he is finishing at .232/.303/.440.  Ramon Santana was the team's leading hitter at .296/.384/.453 and we will now get a glimpse of how he will do in AA as the Rock Cats battle for a spot in the playoffs.  Brad Tippett (9-8) was solid all season with a 3.21ERA and 107K/25BB in a team high 146.0 innings.  Bruce Pugh was a pleasant surprise when added to the starting rotation where he has a 1.98ERA in 7 starts (36.1 innings) with 39K/17BB.  Recent second round pick, Billy Bullock, was solid out of the bullpen with 7 saves and a 2.59ERA in 24.1 innings with 31K/11BB.

Elizabethton Twins (Rookie) (1-3, 45-23, 1st place, +7.5 games)

The Twins finished another dominating season, facing the Danville Braves for the fifth straight year in the league Championship Series.  After winning three of the previous four meetings, this year didn't go as well for the Twins.  The Braves have an excellent pitching staff that was able to silent the potent Twins bats, beating the Twins 7-1 and 5-0.  Tom Stuifbergen got the start in the first game, pitching 7.1 innings with 8 hits, 4 runs and 7K/1BB.  After beating the Braves a couple weeks ago, Edgar Ibarra was unable to repeat in game two when he allowed 7 hits and 4 runs (only 1 earned) in 6.0 innings with 3K/3BB.  The Braves Matt Crim pitched a 9.0 inning complete game shutout in the second game.

Brian Dozier finished his season hitting a league second best .353/.417/.431.  Josmil Pinto had the league's fifth best average (.332/.387/.610) while leading the league with 13 home runs.  Tobias Streich was tied for second with 10 home runs.  Pinto had the league's second most RBI (55) while Michael Gonzalez had the fourth most (43).

GCL Twins (Rookie) (1-0, 34-21, 1st place, +4.5 games)

The GCL has an odd playoff format.  Three division champs plus one wild card team qualify for the playoffs.  The playoffs begin with a one game playoff with the winners moving on to a championship series.  The GCL Twins faced the Nationals in the one game playoff, a game they lost last year.  This year the game was an unbelievable game, a 12 inning affair that they lost 1-0 on an unearned run.

B.J. Hermsen got the start, pitching 7.0 shutout innings with 5 hits and 1K/0BB.  Jose Gonzalez followed by pitching 2.0 one-hit innings with 2K/0BB.  Zach See came on to pitch the final 3.0 innings, allowing 3 hits and the lone unearned run of the game.  The Twins 19 year old Hermsen faced off against the Nationals' ace, Daniel Rosenbaum, who is a 21 year old lefty taken in the 22nd round of this year's draft out of Xavier University.  Hermsen right out of Iowa high school ball last year matched the older college ace, pitch for pitch.

Congratulations to Manager Jake Mauer and all of the Division Champion GCL Twins!

DSL Twins (46-23, 2nd place, -0.5 games)

After finishing second, a half game behind the Yankees-2, and winning their first two playoff series the DSL Twins moved on to face the league's best team in the championship series.  The Twins pitchers performed as they had all year, yet, the Giants pitching staff was a little better as they swept the Twins, 4-3, 3-1 and 2-1.  Cesar Ciurcina (5.2 innings with 4 hits and 2 runs (1 earned)), Wilson Sanchez (5.1 innings with 1 hit and 1 unearned run), and Luis Nunez (4.0 innings with 4 hits and 1 run) all pitched very well.  The problem was that there weren't a lot of bright spots from the Twins offense.  Finishing second best in the 33 team Dominican Summer League is an excellent accomplishment, one that Manager Ramon Barrego and all his DSL Twins can be very proud of.

Player of the Week

This year's final Player of the Week goes to someone who is really one of the organization's best stories.  After being selected in the 49th round of the 2002 draft, Brock Peterson began to work towards his dream of someday playing for the Minnesota Twins.  He began his professional career with Elizabethton in 2003 where he hit for a .290 Average with a .404OBP and 9 home runs.  Peterson struggled a bit the next two years at Quad Cities (.253 Average with 7 home runs) and Ft. Myers (.250 Average with 12 home runs).  Brock returned to Ft. Myers in 2006 when he had his break-out season, hitting .291 Average with 21 home runs and 75 RBI.  He moved on to New Britain in 2007 where he hit a respectable .285 Average with 15 home runs.  He returned to New Britain for most of last year, hitting .264 Average with 14 home runs before a late season promotion to Rochester.

Peterson had to be excited this spring as he joined the Twins for spring training.  He returned to Rochester where he struggled early (hitting .214 in April and .114 in May).  Peterson found his swing in June and has been the Red Wings best hitter since the all-star break.  With only three games remaining, Brock has the third highest average on the team (.311) behind Alexi Casilla and Jose Morales.  For the season, Peterson is hitting .311/.386/.483 in 302 at bats with 18 doubles, 2 triples, 10 home runs and 42 RBI.

Peterson went from a strong second half to a torrid pace this week with 13 hits in 24 at bats (.542 Average) with 7 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs, 7 RBI, 3 walks and only 2 strikeouts.

Peterson has worked hard on his defense the past few years as evidenced by his committing only four errors this year.  Normally players having a year like Peterson would be rewarded with a September callup.  Brock isn't on the 40-man roster which makes it unlikely he will finally achieve his dream this season.  This winter Peterson will be a six year minor league free-agent, one who this writer believes the Twins should sign.  Peterson's professional career began when his name was called in the second last round of the 2002 draft.  It appears that sometime during the next year he will hear his name announced for the first time in a major league ballpark.

It’s become my weekly Saturday morning routine to grab some coffee and go to twinkietown to read this article. Great work

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

Pino...

…I forgot to mention this morning that Pino got a win for his first game in AAA for the Tribe over Louisville. Pino pitched 7.0 innings with 7 hits, 2 runs and 8K/0BB. Nice first game for a young pitcher who has been very good this year.

great write up! Pino..

Hi Roger,
I also look forward to your weekly column.. Its great to follow these youngsters before they make it to the big leagues. You just had to include that about Pino.. A lousy trade for the Twins, hopefully some of the other guys they kept instead do well. He must have good moment on his pitches to get that K rate without a lively fastball.

Okay.....

Major League clubs are reluctant to call up players when teams make the playoffs, but World teams can pull players out of the organization system before the season even ends. What gives, here.

Shades of having an international baseball season DURING spring training.

Waiting to see if Huber goes Australia or makes the Twins as a bench guy instead of Buscher!

Jesse talks about it today and Joe Christenson has a great article in the Strib...

…but my question yesterday about Glen Perkins being outrighted seemed odd, has been answered. Yes it was odd, and maybe had something to do with his being close to being arbitration eligible after this season as a super 2!

by roger13 on Sep 6, 2009 9:51 AM EDT reply actions

New Britain clinches a playoff spot...

…with a 6-4 win today over Trenton, the Rock Cats have a two game lead with one game remaining against Trenton and the season will be over. With this win, they will now meet the division champion Connecticut Defenders…against who they are 4-16 this season.

Michael McCardell got the start today, allowing 4 runs in 6.0 innings with 5 hits. Kyle Waldrop pitched another 2.0 scoreless innings while Alex Burnett came on to pick up his 9th save with a perfect ninth inning.

Wilson Ramos was 2-4 with a home run and RBI to raise his average to .317. Whit Robbins was 1-4 with his ninth home run and 2 RBI. Erik Lis was also 2-4 with two doubles and 2 RBI.

Ramos

Is it just me, or does this guy always seem to improve down the stretch. Last year in FSL, winter ball, AA… Estimated arrival late 2010? Maybe.

by Adam Peterson on Sep 7, 2009 7:53 AM EDT up reply actions

No Adam...

…it isn’t just you. Down the stretch last winter in the Caribbean Series playoffs he played better than anyone, being named the finals MVP. He is doing it again and just maybe he can lead the Rock Cats to a series win over the Defenders. When will he be ready to join the Twins, good question. I think he is ready now!

It is more likely he will get a lot of action again next spring before being sent out to New Britain. If the Twins keep three catchers next year, it will likely be Mauer, Morales and Butera. That would give Gardy the flexibility to get Morales bat into the lineup while having Butera on the bench. So look for Ramos in a Twins uniform a year from now, that is unless there is an injury to Mauer…in which case I suspect he would be here 24 hours later.

Testa and Slama have remarkably similar numbers

Two levels apart.

Waldrop had a nice season, but the K rate is pretty darn low. Does he throw a lot of ground balls, or is his low ERA mostly due to luck?

The Miracle won a tight game last night, 8-7...

…with David Bromberg having one of his roughest starts of the year. Bromberg pitched 5.2 innings with 10 hits, 7 runs and 4K/4BB. They were at Charlotte last night and now return home tonight, and tomorrow night (if necessary).

The hitting stars were Estarlin De Los Santos who was 3-5 with a triple, home run and 4 RBI. Joe Benson also hit a home run while going 3-4 with a double. D.J. Romero wsa 1-3 with 2 runs scored, an RBI and 2 walks.

Santana has been there for awhile...

…Morales was promoted following Beloit’s season this weekend. With lots of guys from NB in the World Cup, they need players. There were comments made about Morales second half…he kind of is replacing Rene Tosoni who has been gone for nearly two weeks.

by roger13 on Sep 9, 2009 10:27 AM EDT reply actions

Morales

This means that if he is not on the AA roster next year, he could be stolen in the minor leauge draft.

If the above is correct, then that is quite a jump for that kid!

by clutterheart on Sep 10, 2009 9:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Morales to NB

Slap in the face to Ben Revere, if you ask me. Ben deserved a year end promotion to New Britain for the playoffs, with Morales going to Ft. Myers.

by ComeOnBlue on Sep 9, 2009 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

The Miracle are the one team in the organization...

…that has a legit chance of winning a championship. They aren’t going to take a player off that team to help a team that has an extreme long-shot of getting past Connecticut. They did the same thing last week by moving Ramon Santana from Beloit to New Britain bypassing all the infielders at Ft. Myers. I don’t view it as a slap in the fact to Ben Revere and I doubt that he does either. I expect he is 100% focused on winning the championship with the players he has played with every day this season.

by roger13 on Sep 9, 2009 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

OK, I hear 'ya

…..I appreciate and respect your opinion. I just know that these kids hope everyday to get the call up and it would of been nice for Ben. I’ve seen Parmalee, Benson and Dolenc play and still think that FtM would be OK. I am routing for NB to be more than a long shot and without Rene and Brandon Roberts we could use Revere. I’ve never seen Morales play but I know that Beloit is no New Britain (AA). I hope he does well for the teams sake.

by ComeOnBlue on Sep 9, 2009 6:07 PM EDT reply actions

I think it does a disservice to Morales

It’s a long way from the Midwest League to the Eastern League. And there aren’t any struggling pitchers in the playoffs.

I'm going to assume that they're promoted

That would make a logjam in New Britian next year if they have Parmelee, Benson, Revere and Morales all fighting for time in the outfield.

Do they want to keep Pridie?

My guess is that Rochester lineup gets thinned out by players the Twins are willing to dump. I don’t see why Moses returns either.

by DJL44 on Sep 10, 2009 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Gone

I’m not seeing Pridie, Hughes, Peterson or Moses being back with the Twins. Not sure if Winfree will be protected.

Toby gardenhire will make it to Rochester as the spare infielder.

Wonder if Dustin Martin will be around.

Angel Morales was promoted just for the playoffs, so not sure if he is officially on the roster of the team at year’s end?

Be interesting to see what AAA guys the Twins sign to take the place of the Macris and Machados. I would like to see a Rochester team of all Prospects and then elt the town complain about not being competitive. Jeez…thought this would be a good year for the Red Wings with all the AAAA guys taking spots.

Did you see the article Jim Mandelaro wrote a couple days ago?

Was tough on the Red Wings, but moreso on several players who didn’t produce. He pointed out that the Wings haven’t won or made the playoffs most of the time since they have been with the Twins, but most of his wrath was taken out on players like Macri and Plouffe who did not do what was expected.

We know the Twins will sign a few veteran minor league pitchers and a couple position players. But I agree that there should be some good prospects with them next season. I do however, see Peterson, Hughes and Pridie all back with the Red Wings. I doubt Winfree will get protected, I also don’t see them losing him unless he signs with another club during the offseason.

I was going to say

I’d like to see these guys on the roster, but Rantz will probably sign five or six veterans and keep as many guys in New Britain for their third years as he can.

CMath...

…great to see someone else thinking about what the four full-season rosters will look like next spring. I am fearful, however, that the third baseman at Rochester to start the year will be Danny Valencia. That will again put Luke Hughes in limbo, eventually they have to decide that he is either going to be a second baseman or corner outfielder and let him settle in. Alot will depend on the FIL, but I also see a good chance that they will have Hicks begin next season at Beloit with a move up to Ft. Myers at the all-star break. Moses will be a six year minor league FA. Do you think he will sign with someone else?

by roger13 on Sep 10, 2009 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Valencia

If he sticks out of spring training it will be due to his glove. If Gardy thinks he can field, he’ll stay. His bat isn’t good enough yet to get him to the majors with a stone glove.

by DJL44 on Sep 10, 2009 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

That's the thing

He consistently wins rave reviews for his glove from opposing managers and scouts. In spring training, he was clearly better than Harris, for example. Only Gardy wants defensive perfection from rookies.

by cmathewson on Sep 10, 2009 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions

My guess is he sticks then

But don’t expect him to be good right away. My guess is we get a pretty mediocre rookie season from Valencia – above average glove and below average bat. If he can be Brendan Harris with more glove we should be satistfied.

by DJL44 on Sep 11, 2009 10:02 AM EDT up reply actions

But...

that’s the case with any rookie. You’re never sure what you’re going to get to start. But you have to let them make adjustments and learn. No one expects him to turn into Albert Pujols as a rookie. But he can be very solid. And that’s all they need. It’s not like they’ll hit him 3-4-5. He’ll hit 6-7-8 and play average defense. Gotta start somewhere.

by SethSpeaks on Sep 12, 2009 9:42 AM EDT up reply actions

If Valencia is the best solution, all things considered, Gardy has to accept that and work with him. And, really, what are the alternatives?

  1. Harris/Buscher platoon: There’s really no upside here and the status quo is about replacement level. It’s nice to have a replacement level fall back. But it’s not an answer for the future.
  1. Crede: I don’t think his back will ever get to the point where he can play 120 games a year. Suppose you sign him to an incentive-laden deal as a way to ease Valencia in. I think you stunt Valencia’s growth with him on the bench.
  1. An outside free agent: You could sign someone like Rolan or Lowell. But whatever money you pay a third baseman detracts from your ability to improve your middle infield and starting pitching. Valencia is the closest to the majors of any minor leaguer. If you keep him in AAA for another year, you are forced to use less able players at critical positions.

So correct.....

Yet the problem is that the Twins have four glaring holes in their ofense right now and anyone from the minors would be equally as good as what the team throws out there on a daily basis, and you can spend alot of money to upgrade one or two of the spots, but Bill Smith & Co. still have to answer the magic question: “If they aren’t prospects, then why keep them around.”

Second Base: Alexi Casilla. Is he truly this bad? Where’s the bunting? Where’s the walks? He can’t steal bases if he doesn’t get on base. Still considered a prospect, but some conisder him the less-than-second-coming of Luis Rivas.

Alternatives: Matt Tolbert, who will probably be out of options and ahs hit even worse than Alexi in the majors this year. Do you keep hom on the 40-man.

Steve Tolleson, Toby Gardenhire. Not alot there in the immediate wings. Of course, you can always keep one guy around to bat 9th and make three outs in a game. Someone DOES have to make outs.

Shortstop. Cabrera, is he worth paying Punto-money for two more years. If the choice is only Punto, one could say — go for it. He has a bit of pop, can run, is a plus-side fielder. Otherwise, stuck with Punto or Harris. $4 million for a .225 hitter. Remember when the Twins balked at paying Denny Hocking a million. Times have changed.Harris ahs the bat and does work hard. If he isn’t the super-backup, he can fill a role here or at third. But the Twins could do better, you’d think. In the wings: Trevor Plouffe, Steve Singleton and more guys who hit less homers than Punto. Is SS a power position? If this isn’t the place you stick with a #9 hitter, than it should pack some punch. I doubt that Plouffe will hit more than .250 over time. He won’t be a Greg Gagne in the field. But the Twins need to get someone league average at either 2nd or SS. If Trevor isn’t a prospect, and a #1 pick is hardly glory if he’s the backup, go figure.

3B. Bushcer/Harris. Crede. Would the Twins make, and Crede accept, the same deal he got this year? Either way, Crede will try the market. Chances are, he’ll come up with a deal even less (no incentives) than he got from the Twins in ‘09. Almost wish the Twins had traded him. Is Brian Buscher worth even 40-manning for 2010? Hell, Matt Macri might’ve been equally as good (he did bang 11 homers for Rochester). Alejandro Machado is out, I’m sure. Brandan Harris is a back-up, and would be sufficient if that prospect, Danny Valenca, doesn’t produce. Why they didn’t give Valencia some bench here in September is beyond me. At least let him live the major league life. Some at-bats better than none. Instead, a cold entry in spring training. If you do sign someone else for 2-3 years, than you could’ve traded Valencia back in July and mayeb be 4-5 games better come September. The other system choices are Luke Hughes, who will probably be Rule 5ived by someone, and Debinson Romero, who shouldn’t be on the 40-man. All the converetd third-sackers playing other positions: Matt Moses, Whit Robbins, David Winfree are bench guys that you don’t care to put in the field.

Outfield. Carlos Gomez or Delmon Young. Both young and still prospects. Repalcements are at least two years away. Could you find a better repalcement for both as a free-agent? Move Kubel to left and get a decent 4th outfielder, allowing Morneau and Mauer to DH more?

So, the infield is absically prospects Trevor Plouffe (probably a back-up) and Valencia. Casilla is worth a looksee if you upgrade everywhere else.

So the Twins go into 2010 needing at least two bonafide everyday hitting free agents, one spot a fill in, and one spot you hate to let go of with a couple of promising 24-year-olds.

This is what I disagree with
anyone from the minors would be equally as good as what the team throws out there on a daily basis

I think Valencia is better than Harris, Buscher or Crede, all things considered. Morales is an upgrade over Redmond. Otherwise I agree with you.

The others are replacement level or below, all things considered. Casilla is not the answer. Tolleson can hit but not field. Tolbert just sucks all around. Toby? He’s a long shot to stick in AAA. Dinkelman has a decent bat but too little range.

In the outfield, Tosoni might be a decent fourth outfielder, but not next year. Martin and Pridie are the same guy. Roberts’ upside is Jason Tyner. You have to go down to single A to find future major leaguers in the outfield.

I think they have to go out and get two middle infielders and resign Pavano or a comparable starter. They might be able to get one of the middle infielders via trade, like, JJ Hardy. But they’ll have to sign someone like Iwamura in any event to play second. They can’t afford to sign Mauer, Pavano, and Iwamura and go out and get Roland. They need Valencia to step into the third base role.

CMath...

…don’t take me the wrong way. I believe that the Twins should work to solve their middle infield problems and a veteran starter this winter. I believe they should go with Valencia from game one next spring unless he self destructs in spring training. My comment above is that I am fearful that a certain person in the organization will do everything he can to not allow that to happen.

So true

Again, you can afford to have one stinker in the lineup. That #8 OR #9 guy in the order. Someone does have to contribute to 24-27 outs. Can the Twins afford to have a stinker AND a prospect. Maybe. But they would be best served if they made the call on Shortstop/Young/Gomez and 2nd base now. Is Casilla a go? If he is, than Punto is pure backup (with harris). Could they get someone for Young…a thirdbaseman/DH/swing utfielder type with some punch?

Hummmm…how will the rotation work out in 2010:

Baker, Slowey, Duensing, Liriano, Blackburn. You have Swarzak and manship in the wings. You have Bromberg knocking on the mid-season door. You have Perkins (perhaps) and Boof as back-ups. You sign a first-line top of the rotation guy and become that much stronger. You get a weathered old lefty innings eating rookie…wow!

Power

Doesn’t Morales display a bit more power? If nothing else, a better bat off the bench.

Two losses...

…New Britain started their best of five series with a 6-2 loss. Connecticut isn’t dealing with as many losses to the World Cup as the Rock Cats, so after going 4-16 against the Defenders this year the Cats certainly have an uphill battle. Deolis Guerra gave up 8 hits and 5 runs in 4.0 innings. Cole DeVries came on to pitch 3.0 shutout innings with only 3 hits and 6K/1BB. Carlos Gutierrez gave up a could hits and a run in his inning. Brian Dinkelman had a big home run with Wilson Ramos, Erik Lis and Yangeris Solarte all getting hits. Angel Morales was 0-4 in his first exposure to AA pitching.

The Miracle also lost last night, 7-4. This forces them to face Charlotte tonight in a big game three with the winner moving on to the FSL championship. Tyler Robertson allowed 9 hits and 6 runs in 3.1 innings while picking up the loss. Boof Bonser pitched 2.0 no-hit, shutout innings with 4K/0BB. Nick Romero was 1-1 with a 3 run homer. He also had a walk. Joe Benson and Chris Parmalee also each had a hit.

Two more losses, ends Miracle season...

…After dominating Charlotte all season (14-6), the Miracle couldn’t get enough runs last night as Santos Arias pitched very well in a 3-2 loss with the third run unearned. Arias pitched 5.0 innings with 4 hits and 3K/4BB. Bobby Lanigan, who had moved up from Beloit recently, pitched 4.0 shutout innings of relief with only 1 hit. Ben Revere was 2-3 with 2 RBI while Jair Fernandez also had 2 hits. This ends a wonderful season for the Miracle who won both halves of their season.

Meanwhile, Matt Fox couldn’t hold down the potent Connecticut offense, pitching 4.0 innings with 6 hits, 6 runs and 5K/2BB. Kyle Waldrop gave up 3 more runs as the Defenders beat our Rock Cats, 10-7. Alex Burnett did pitch a perfect inning with 3 strikeouts. The Rock Cat offense was led by catcher Wilson Ramos who was 4-5 with a home run, 2 runs scored and 4 RBI. Recently promoted Ramon Santana was 3-5 while Whit Robbins and Steve Singleton each had 2 hits. The Cats return home for the next game, down 0-2 in this best of five series.
