Twins Agree to Terms With All Arbitration-Eligible Players

Well, that was quick and painless.

Name '10 Age Service Time Arb Status '10 Estimate '10 Actual Difference
Jesse Crain 28 5.039 3rd Year $2.3 MM $2 MM + $300 K
Matt Guerrier 31 5.056 3rd Year $2.6 MM $3.15 MM - $550 K
J.J. Hardy 27 4.164 2nd Year $5 MM $5.1 MM - $100 K
Brendan Harris 29 3.112 1st Year $1.1 MM $1.45 MM - $350 K
Francisco Liriano 26 3.104 1st Year $1.5 MM $1.6 MM - $100 K
Pat Neshek 29 3.087 1st Year $700 K $625 K + $75 K
Carl Pavano 34 11.161 Type B Free Agent $7 MM $7 MM --
Delmon Young 24 3.034 1st Year $1.75 MM $2.5 MM - $850 K

We now have all the figures in, as according to Joe C., all eight of our boys have accepted a one year contract.

Largely we didn't do too bad in our predictions, but big misses on Guerrier and Young, and an unforeseen move to sign Harris to a two-year deal threw things a little bit.  In all we under-estimated by $1.575 million

Guerrier’s is being reported as $3,150,000 by Kelly Theiser.

I can’t wait to get all these figures so we can see just how close to the $90 million mark the team is. The further away the better, because it may leave a little extra money in addition to the $5 million they apparently are willing to spend (Washburn offer).

by Twins Territory on Jan 19, 2010 4:08 PM EST reply actions

Ditto.

But it’s not looking good, considering how far we’ve missed on a couple of these. Going off what I know now, I might bump Crain another $400K, Harris another $200 K and Liriano another $500 K.

by Jesse on Jan 19, 2010 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

If these bumps were correct...

…they’d be at about $89,277,000 I believe (I may be off by $100,000).

by Twins Territory on Jan 19, 2010 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

Joe C. had the Twins at $89.8MM with his estimates. He was $1MM over on Hardy and $125K over on Neshek. But, he was off by $600,000 (he had $2MM even) on Young and we don’t know about others.

by Twins Territory on Jan 19, 2010 4:17 PM EST reply actions

So far then...

…we’re at $88,277,000 if his estimates for Harris, Liriano and Crain are correct. He has Crain at $3 million though.

If we trade Perkins/Casilla, that would save close to $1 million.

by Twins Territory on Jan 19, 2010 4:19 PM EST up reply actions

I originally had us around $85,

but that was pre-Hardy.

Hopefully we get the rest of these numbers soon.

by Jesse on Jan 19, 2010 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

That sounds about right then if Hardy is at $5.1 million. I’d have to think they are looking at a $95 million payroll if they offered Washburn $5 million.

by Twins Territory on Jan 19, 2010 4:28 PM EST up reply actions

I’d definitely do that. I think it might take up to $6.5 million for them if Hudson’s demand started at $9 million as reported.

by Twins Territory on Jan 19, 2010 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

Kouzmanoff looks better now. He just agreed to a $3.1 million deal for next season, meaning he would have been a pretty cheap option.

by Twins Territory on Jan 19, 2010 5:11 PM EST reply actions

Brendan Harris has agreed to a 2-year deal according to Joe Christensen.

by Twins Territory on Jan 19, 2010 5:12 PM EST reply actions

He's now reporting...

…that Harris will get $3.2 million over two years. If it’s equal, it’ll be $1.6 this season.

by Twins Territory on Jan 19, 2010 5:17 PM EST up reply actions

Crazy!

I don’t see Harris as a starter and he is lousy as a bench player. Why lock him up for two years? I thought he should have been non-tendered.

by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Jan 19, 2010 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

Puzzling

Makes sure he won’t get non-tendered but I don’t see the incentive for the Twins. It’s not like Brendan Harris is going to break out and provide marginal value above his contract. Good for Harris, no upside for the Twins.

by DJL44 on Jan 19, 2010 5:21 PM EST up reply actions

The estimates were slightly above $1 million for his arbitration figure. All in all, he’ll make about $1.6 million each season. Plus, he would have went through arbitration next season and seen another bigger increase.

by Twins Territory on Jan 19, 2010 5:24 PM EST up reply actions

Not likely

He would have been non-tendered next year and the Twins would have re-signed him cheaply or found someone else. Harris is fungible.

by DJL44 on Jan 19, 2010 5:40 PM EST up reply actions

I wonder if this might show their intentions for him next season. Maybe they see him at third and are looking to upgrade second.

by Twins Territory on Jan 19, 2010 5:44 PM EST up reply actions

I hope not

He’s cost-certain trade bait now if Valencia wins the job. I do hope they upgrade at 2B – then a Punto/Harris platoon at 3B becomes the likely scenario. It’s not much to worry about either way, if he’s put on waivers someone will claim him.

by DJL44 on Jan 19, 2010 5:50 PM EST up reply actions

Someone said that Bill Smith hinted that Harris might be the third basemen with Tolbert or Punto as his backup (at the Caravan in Fargo). This signing seems to go along with that hint.

If this is the case, it could mean they are focused on second base and Punto isn’t in that plan.

by Twins Territory on Jan 19, 2010 6:22 PM EST up reply actions

It's not a horrible move

Harris had a bad season last year but he should bounce back some, he shouldn’t be a 77 OPS+ guy again. Punto will be gone after next season and Tolbert and Casilla haven’t shown anything so Harris will likely stick around to be plugged in where ever over the next two years. It also might mean that the Twins are ok with him at 3B until Valencia is ready.

by Gunnarthor on Jan 19, 2010 5:48 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed.

He could potentially be a placeholder at third until they think Valencia is ready to take over. It isn’t the worst move…

by Twins Territory on Jan 19, 2010 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

Disagree

I would say that Casilla has produced more in a Twins uni than Harris—Casilla was very good from May-July. Tolbert would figure to produce as much. Harris is 29 and put up OPS+ numbers of 94 and 77, while being subpar on defense (my layman’s opinion is that his defense is less of a problem at third). Casilla and Tolbert also have some speed, a commodity which the ’10 Twins will lack.

by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Jan 19, 2010 6:16 PM EST up reply actions

No

First, Tolbert is only a year younger and is a much worse player. I agree that Casilla could still develop b/c of his solid minor league record but he’s been dismal as a pro. His defense is substandard and he can’t hit worth a lick. He’s had an OPS+ of 44 or worse two of the last three years. While Harris had a bad season last year he was still much better than Alexi.

by Gunnarthor on Jan 19, 2010 6:33 PM EST up reply actions

+1

I don’t have a problem with us keeping Harris this year, but what reason is there to commit for two years? This feels like the Punto contract all over again. With him, there also appeared to be little need to go for two years.

Harris doesn’t even slide into 1B… at least it’s less money than LNP contract

Hudson-Lopez

Hudson made almost $8M last year IIRC (that is including incentives). I doubt he would settle for as little as 2-3 M per year, especially since he acquitted himself quite well last year.

Lopez made 3.5M. He also had a good season, especially after being traded to the Brewers. I think a fair contract for him would be $4-4.5M with an option for ’11.

by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Jan 19, 2010 5:17 PM EST reply actions

I would pay $4 to $5 million for Lopez.

Several people seem to think Hudson may eventually sign for $6-6.5 million and a third year might be the deal maker.

by Twins Territory on Jan 19, 2010 5:19 PM EST up reply actions

That's what's so frustrating about all this Washburn nonsense ...

They have the money for Lopez and are in the ballpark for Hudson. I’d almost be willing to bet Hudson would accept 5 million a year out of fear that the Nationals may be the only other team with an offer.

The Twins could sign either of these guys in a heartbeat and either one of them would give the whole pitching staff a boost.

by sploorp on Jan 19, 2010 8:47 PM EST up reply actions

For your board...

Harris will make $1.45 million in 2010 and $1.75 million in 2011.

by Twins Territory on Jan 19, 2010 5:36 PM EST reply actions

The rest:

Liriano: $1.6 million
Crain: $2 million

by Twins Territory on Jan 19, 2010 6:43 PM EST reply actions

The team now seems to be just slightly below the $90 million mark for their 25-man roster.

by Twins Territory on Jan 19, 2010 6:44 PM EST reply actions

Arbitration Finals:

Hardy: $5.1MM
Young: 2.6MM
Neshek: $625,000
Pavano: $7MM
Crain: $2MM
Liriano: $1.6MM
Harris: $1.45MM
Guerrier: $3.15MM.

Mauer

Think the FO is looking to stop looking for free agents and front load a Mauer deal?

by clutterheart on Jan 19, 2010 6:49 PM EST reply actions

So

With no free agents signings, the club projects to carry Punto, Harris, Casilla and Tolbert. That is a whole bunch of the same thing (except Harris can’t run) and they will occupy two positions in the batting order unless Danny Valencia wins the 3B job.

by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Jan 19, 2010 6:55 PM EST reply actions

They haven't really been looking....

….for FA’s anyway, have they? 40-man roster is full, so whenever they pick up a FA, they have to release somebody (see the Bonser for Pavano, then the Keppel for Condry move more recently), which is OK when you’re dropping guys you don’t mind losing, but they’re likely out of those types of people. Any more moves this offseason need to be a trade of 2 or more to even make room to pick Crede up again.

by WindyCityTwinsFan on Jan 19, 2010 10:25 PM EST up reply actions

Still plenty to drop on the roster

If they get a 2B, backup outfielder or 3B they can cut:

Luke Hughes
Alexi Casilla
Matt Tolbert
Steven Tolleson
Jason Pridie

None of those guys would be missed if they get Orlando Hudson for 2 years. Tolleson is 26 and hit .270 / .338 / .375 in AAA → not going to beat out Orlando Hudson.

If they get a pitcher they have to trade Perkins first.

by DJL44 on Jan 19, 2010 11:24 PM EST up reply actions

They’re open to trading both Perkins and Casilla for the right price, so if they can get a second basemen and/or a fourth outfielder, they have options to open up a spot as you mentioned.
