Twins 2010 Payroll Estimate

Thought we'd take a look at the updated 2010 payroll, so here goes:

C-Mauer-$20M (I'm banking on a raise for this year with his extension)

1b-Morneau-$15M

2b-Punto (uggh)-$4M

SS-Hardy-$5.1M

3b-Harris-$1.45M

RF-Cuddyer-$9.4167M

CF-Span-$470K (my pre-arbitration estimate)

LF-Young-$2.6M

DH-Kubel-$4.1M

Bench: Casilla-$450K

Pridie/Martin-$430K

Morales-$430K

Tolbert-$450K

Total offense: $63.85M

Baker-$3M

Slowey-$470K

Blackburn-$470K

Pavano-$7M

Liriano-$1.6M

Bullpen:

Nathan-$11.25M

Rauch-$2.9M

Mijares-$470K

Neshek-$625K

Crain-$2M

Guerrier-$3.15M

Duensing/Condrey-?

Total staff: $29.34M

So I have total payroll at basically $96.675M, plus whatever the figures come to for Condrey. I'd guess that would put us as a total of around $98M or just under that. Meaning assuming we are giving Mauer a raise right away to $20M, and have a payroll of around $100M, we only have about $2M to work with to find an upgrade at 2b, 3b, and/or SP, plus a potential bench bat. That makes it that much more critical, IMO, to deal Crain/Guerrier and free up that $3-5M or so in payroll.

Anyway, thoughts? I thought this would help us get an updated look.

Cuddyer and Morneau

They both got $1M/year signing bonuses when they signed their contracts in 2008. For accounting purposes this is prorated over the life of the contract. The point of doing that was to free up future payroll, so I’d credit the Twins with an extra $2M for 2010.

Minimum salary

I may be wrong but I thought that players who weren’t yet arbitration eligible (Span, Blackburn, Mijares et al) didn’t have to get raises, they would still be paid the league mimimum, which, this year stays static at 435K.

2nd and third year players

are almost always given at least a little more than the bare minimum.

Seems to me

a question as to whether Mauer will get a raise this year. They might rip up his 2010 contract as part of a new extension, or they might simply negotiate an extension that begins in 2011.

Still

trading one of their right handed bullpen arms seems like something to do.

They have to find room for another infielder.

I'm holding out for a trade still.

Just a hunch. I’d like to be right on a hunch, just once.

TIme to get creative ? and Save some Cash ???

Lets offer Glen Perkins and Alexi Casilla

to the Colorado Rockies for 2B E.Y.JR or Eric Young the rookie second baseman

offers what we need to this offense and down the role could develop into a #2 hitter in our order….
right now would probably have to bat 8th…

How do I tell my kid brother about Desmond Jennings? (he loves the Rays)

The Roster Needs Some Work

Too many RH relievers, they probably could use a LOOGy. Way too many futility infielders, and right now two of them would start. No real backup outfielder.

by Alexi Casilla All-Star on Jan 19, 2010 11:58 PM EST reply actions

With Mijares as the lefty set-up guy, the LOOGY might be Perk or Duensing,

depending on how the rotation plays out.

You could also look at LOOGY as a waste of a position—as long as there’s someone who can get LHB out, that’s all that matters.

With Granderson out of the AL Central it's not AS much of a concern

I agree that having a LOOGY is mostly overrated.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

Payroll........

Condrey was reported at $900,000.

The Twins are hoping Perk or Duensing become the sceond elfty, or maybe Liriano if the Twins sign Davis or Washburn, which is still a possibility. Be ncie, though, to have someone other than Maroth at AAA Rochester. Mahay is still looking for work, too.

I can live with an expensive bullpen, for 2010. But Guerrier, Crain and Rauch can all be amrketed as closers. Look for them to be phased out as the season happens. The Twins need to showcase at least one or two future arms this year (Delaney, Slama).

Yes, the Twins need a #2 hitter. I don’t want to see Punto in that spot. I don’t need to see Hardy in that spot. There is no reason to have Harris in that spot. Get someone, please!

See that Kouz signed for $3.1 million, and Carlos Gomex got $1.1 in arbitration. I’ll still be adding Carlos to myf antasy team in 2010!

Give me a Carlos' fan estimate of his batting line

as a Brewers fan, I’m apprehensive when I look at his past numbers. Give me some hope.

p.s. I hope JJ has a great year.

For Gomez,

.250/.310/.380.

Not great, but he’ll be one of the top two or three CF’s in the league in terms of saving the Brewers runs. Lots of talent, and I really hope he out-hits that triple slash, but he’ll need to learn some discipline and pitch identification skills.

by Jesse on Jan 20, 2010 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

+1

I’m not optimistic about Gomez’s hitting, but I really hope he’ll do well.

His real value will still come from his defense, even if his bat improves.
