Did the Twins pay too much for Pavano?
If Pavano's case went to arbitration, would he have gotten $7 million? He did pitch well for the Twins and finish the season with a 14-12 combined record and a 5.10 ERA. Now, those two numbers didn't show how well he pitch last season as he had a FIP of 4.00, which we all now is a better indication of a pitcher's success. I'm of the belief that an arbitor wouldn't look at his FIP and pay more attention to his ERA and his W-L. Neither jump off the page. Also, to be a little nit-picky he failed to reach 200 innings.
So, what does everyone think Pavano would have gotten if he went to arbitration? Would be have gotten $7 million? Does he deserve a $5+ million raise?

Didn't he get more like $4.5 million
once you include incentives? That’s more like a $2.5 million raise. Seems about on the money to me.
Do you want to know the terrifying truth, or do you want to see me sock a few dingers?
Haha
Now I feel bad :-/

It's not worthless.
I still think it’s a debateable point, whether Pavano would have received $7 million or not.
For me I’m okay with it regardless, because considering what was on the free agent market (and the Twins’ liklihood of landing the “top tier” guys) I don’t know if we could have done much better than Carl for a cool seven mil. If he’s healthy, we should get our moneys worth.
The argument is valid.
Now that Joel Piniero has signed for 2/16, I think Pavano’s 1/7 salary is arguably a salary more fair to the player. Although it is one year less, I think many fans would have preferred Piniero at that price. Not to mention the fact that you could probably have Pedro Martinez, John Garland or Jarod Washburn at 1/5. Personally, I like Pavano, but with his injury concerns, he was wise to accept arbitration and then get rewarded with $7 million.

not sure
I figured he’d get 5, which is roughly what the Twins offered. It’s a bit more than I would have liked, but at the same time, it isn’t horribly overpriced. If he matches what he did for us down the stretch, he will be a nice signing. If he pitches closer to his FIP, we will have gotten a steal… Stay healthy Carl.

I'm O.K.
with the amount he got. I was just wondering if we would have been able to save a couple extra million dollars to sign a middle infielder or put that little amount to signing Mauer. Oh well. Hopefully he pitches as well as he did last year.
It's about right
On the open market, I think Pavano would get a one year deal comparable, but a bit below Joel Pineiro as noted above. Since Pineiro signed for 2/16, 1/7 feels about right.
