Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Another interesting move for the Royals. Their starting nine now looks something like this...

C-Jason Kendall
1B-Billy Butler
2B-Alberto Callaspo
SS-Yafasfas Betancourt
3B-Alex Gordon
LF-David DeJesus
CF-Scott Podsednik
RF-Rick Ankiel
DH-Jose Guillen

With a bench including a mish-mash of Anderson, Aviles, Getz, Bloomquist and Fields. Not horrible, but they're still relying on Butler and Gordon to have big seasons for the middle of their lineup.

I have no idea how they'll construct a batting order.

Haha, the contest between Dayton Moore and Omar Minaya continues

Dayton: “Rick Ankiel, 3.25 M and an option for 6 M! I dare you to make a worse move than that, Minaya!”

Omar: "How about… Gary Matthews Jr!

More seriously

This isn’t an awful move for the Royals, more just a nonsensical Dayton Moore move. Ankiel won’t be great for them but he shouldn’t be as bad as 2009, barring another injury.

Also – Yafasfas Betancourt? Wha?

Dayton Moore

The frustrating thing, is that Dayton Moore was absolutely the right hire for the Royals. He was filled with such promise and for the life of me, I can’t figure out what in the heck he is trying to do now. Does he want a team with OBP guys, power hitters, defense, pitching??? It’s like they morph to a different side each off-season. Those poor powder blue fans. They deserve a better, more concentrated effort.

Ouch

C-Jason Kendall – suck
1B-Billy Butler – below average
2B-Alberto Callaspo – average
SS-Yunieski Betancourt – worst in baseball, sub-replacement
3B-Alex Gordon – below average, potential to be average
LF-David DeJesus – average
CF-Scott Podsednik – suck
RF-Rick Ankiel – suck, potential to be above replacement
DH-Jose Guillen – below average

Lots of recognizable names but >70 wins only because they have Grienke.

sub-replacement?

is that like after trying out all the other players first, and then trying out fans and beer vendors, and then trying out just not having a player at SS, then and only then they try out Yuni?

wow that dude sucks!

I like parts of the Royals.

Butler still has a shot I think, although I’ve always been optimistic. Callaspo I like, Gordon I like, DeJesus I like, and Guillen could be a good supplemental bat in the right offense. Here I think he’s wasted.

Podsednek, Kendall, Betancourt and Ankiel, however, all look like wrong pieces. Or at least pieces you don’t want to start and rely on in any way.

This is a lot better than Podsednik, one of the worst CFs in the league

I wuldn’t be surprised to see Dejesus move back to center, cause he’s a better fielder. Not that he’s all that good. But he’s not a dog.

And and Yasfrasass is just the worst. To thine Moore actually traded for that guy!? WTF?

Jack Z.

deserves an extension in Seattle for that alone.

Trading Yuniesky was nothing short of a miracle.
