Agreed
I just saw it on mlbtraderumors as well, then posted it in fanshots to hit home and see you already got it up here.
This late in the game and from a fairly reliable source it’s hard to not get a bit excited. If ole Billy pulls this off I’ll have to start respecting him much more.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
I was going to post something just like this
He had a tough rookie season but he’s not looking too bad right now.
THis would be double plus good

Anyone have ESPN Insider?
So we can see what the note on rumor central is? I would like to know if there is some more detail, or you know, sources.
Olney is the source.
Wherever he’s getting his info from, it’s probably not from the Twins, which is even better if you ask me.
Slam Dunk?
THis is a little less of a slam dunk move than I thought as there’s some age risk here, but he’s been a pretty solid player the last couple years with only very very slight falloff with the bat and the glove. There is some risk he’d take a moderate dive with his player type at age 32, but even a little regression would be OK and keep him a sizable improvement of watching Tolbert hit a lot, clutch hit in 163 or no.

He was my top choice coming nto the offseason
But if they had tried to sign him early, they would have overspent. By waiting, they let his price drop into their budget. The best of both worlds.

No way!
That would great! I hope it’s not just a rumor.

Sample Lineup
I know this has been done a lot but I just wanted to look at it once more
CF Span
2B Hudson
C Mauer
1B Morneau
RF Cuddyer
LF Kubel
DH Thome
SS Hardy
3B Valencia
I know that most days it would be Young and Punto instead of Thome and Valencia but that just doesn’t look as sexy. Thome batting 7TH and Hardy 8th. That’s insane, this would be one of the best lineups in the league IMO.

That’s the line-up in October.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
That's a terrific lineup
Hudson improves the up the middle defense also. The run prevention improvement from Harris/Casilla to Hardy/Hudson is just huge. Hudson also switch hits so they could run an all-lefty lineup with the exceptions of Cuddyer and Hardy (swap Punto for Valencia).
I hope Bill Smith’s offseason is:
Hardy for Gomez
Pavano for 1 year $7M
Condrey for just over the minimum
Extension for Mauer
Hudson for cheap ($3M)
That’s an A+ offseaon.
Thome is icing
Thome without Hudson because they “didn’t have the money” is actually a downgrade as far as I’m concerned. There was no hole to fill there. Decent move but not necessary.
That's fair enough.
I understand that viewpoint, it’s more or less where I started. For me it wasn’t so much Thome himself, but that our bench is better because of him.
... tempering my excitement
Why is Hudson so cheap? Gold Glove, solid OBP, “proven veteran”. All the high-revenue teams are set at 2B?
Flooded Market
There was a lot of good options at 2B this off season so the price is driven down. It’s simple supply and demand, which makes it even more intelligent for the Twins to take advantage of this.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
Wow
I can’t wait for the 2010 season to start already!

Joe C. has a note as well
It’s part way down and he comments that the Twins wouldn’t be willing to spend 3 million for him. That seems unrealistic to get him any cheaper than that, especially when O-Cab just signed for 4. Maybe 2-3 plus incentives is possible but I gotta think he’ll get at least 3-4 guaranteed.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
Damn it!
I’m at work, and I need to try to be productive, but now all I am going to do is refresh my sports pages all day. Hurry up and get this done, Twins.
man oh man I hope this thing happens! Watched him as a D-Back and he is great guy to have around a clubhouse and he brings unreal energy to the field!

This, in addition to mlbtr's latest
about how great Mauer’s contract extension talks are going makes for one potentially awesome day/week.

I am too
I am too Jesse, the Twins have really made all the right moves this offseason. It’s amazing what a little money will do to upgrade a roster. and the Twins really know how to stretch a buck, so they got a LOT out of the new ballpark bump.

well,
they are also beneficiaries of a lot of teams who have spent high prior to the recession. Some of these free agents are victims of a market correction and years of overspending. Now this offseason teams seem a little scared to spend.
Johnny Damon and Orlando Hudson are paying for that, the Twins are benefitting.

Please oh please oh please
Mauer would definitely sign if this were to happen!!! What type of deal? $3-4 guaranteed with incentives and option for 2011?

Wow...
its a fun time to be a Twins fan. I hope they can pull this off, it will easily be the best all around roster the twins have had in the time I’ve followed them!
My day is wasted before noon.
Now I will constantly be on the internet hoping for an announcement of an O-dog signing.
Rain.
Hate to rain on anyone’s parade but MLB TR:
11:15am: Ladson tweets that the Indians, Rockies, and another AL team – not the Twins – are in on Hudson, aside from the Nationals. He adds in another tweet that Hudson “appears unwilling to play for the Nats at a discount.”
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/02/orlando-hudson-rumors-monday.html
This doesn't mean anything about the Twins.
Chances are one source has some information, another source has some other information. All it means is that more teams want Hudson all of a sudden.
You’d think that being the only team on this list to contend in 2010 would be an incentive for Hudson.
You don't think
the Rockies will contend at all this season?

well
The Rockies should contend too but we are near locks for the post season with a Hudson signing. The Twins better not let a few million keep them from signing Hudson….and by a few million I mean if he signs with someone else for less than 6 million on a 1 year deal and we don’t get him, I’ll be upset.

Steve Singleton lets out a "yay"
I don’t think this one will bite them.
Seriously, most of the guys at ESPN MLB have a hard on for the Twins.
I suspect this could just be Buster reading between the lines of wishful thinking land.
but since
when did ESPN say anything besides “Rick Porcello is only 20 years old” – I realize that is Carey, but they were also big huge Porcello fans.

I regret to inform you
that Mr. Porcello turned 21 over a month ago.

Ha-ha
yup, he’s just another washed up 21 yr old now…
at least I hope so, so the Twins have nothing to worry about…
And he's still drunk

Heres what the INSIDER on ESPN said!
There are signs that the Twins have emerged as a serious player for second baseman Orlando Hudson, who has also drawn interest from the Nationals, Indians and Rays, among other teams, according to ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney.
Hudson, 32, hit .283 with a .357 on-base percentage last year for the Dodgers, and with the Twins’ situation unsettled at second and third base — and with J.J. Hardy taking over at shortstop — Hudson would fit the Twins well, as a switch-hitter who could slot in near the top of the lineup, or perhaps as the No. 7 hitter.
Hudson has an excellent reputation as a teammate, which is something on which the Twins have placed a high value.
AND HERE IS THE COMMENT LEFT BY KEITH LAW! “Hudson has become quite overrated with the glove; he’s good on popups but isn’t anything special on ground balls, although he’s flashy and plays with energy, making it appear as if he’s a better fielder than he actually is. One disturbing trend: Hudson became a pretty severe ground-ball hitter this year, and although he was never a big power hitter, he posted his worst isolated power rate since 2003. It could be an early sign of an overall decline at the plate.”
even if
Keith Law is correct in his assessment of Hudson, as declining at the plate, Hudson is still 100x better than Punto with the bat and also with the glove.
I can see Hudson in a Twins uniform and golly, I hope that he signs.
"Don't take life for granted, because tomorrow isn't promised to any of us." - Kirby Puckett
better than punto
Yes he is better than punto but his glove is not better. He has won gold gloves but he is overated. It would be nice to have hudson at 2nd and punto at 3rd tho
No Punto, then....
If Orlando replaces Punto on second base and in the batting order, how will I know when to get a beer, go to the bathroom, or take the dog out!? Ohhhhhhh wait……..is Casilla coming back? ;)
by MinnesotaRage on Feb 2, 2010 11:07 PM EST up reply actions
Remove Hudson's name from that sentence and you would think he was referring to Punto!
Hudson has become quite overrated with the glove; he’s good on popups but isn’t anything special on ground balls, although he’s flashy and plays with energy, making it appear as if he’s a better fielder than he actually is.
Bingo. Did Keith Law just describe Nick Punto?
And 33morneaumvp, where do you make this shit up from? I swear you are the king of anal ventriloquists. No one is better than you at making absolute statements filled with hyperbole and offerred as undeniable truths.
100x better with the bat?
Punto career avg 248 BB% 9.9 k% 18.7 OBP 322 OPS 647 BABIP 301
Hudson 282 8.8 16.4 348 778 320
Ok, Hudson is definitely better, but %100? Well despite the ridiculousness of that statement, on the offensive side of the ball I will excuse your offensive hyperbole, but on defense:
Punto’s UZR/150 at 2nd: 10.2 (2008), 9.4 (2009)
Hudson’s UZR150 2nd: -7.6 (2008), -3.7 (2009)
Not only is it pretty clear Hudson isn’t a 100x better defender than Punto, there is a good case to make that despite Punto’s overrated D, Punto is significantly BETTER than Hudson.
by montanatwinsfan on Feb 1, 2010 9:01 PM EST up reply actions
okay
let me put it this way: who would you rather have starting at 2B, Hudson or Punto?
Yes, 100x was a bit extravagant, but some words of mine were not written or I was typing too fast.
100x better than Punto with the bat and also with the glove.should read: 100x better than Punto with the bat and he is also decent with the glove.
"Don't take life for granted, because tomorrow isn't promised to any of us." - Kirby Puckett
Doesn't matter
Because Punto will still be with the team. What really matters is how much Hudson is better than Matt Tolbert. Orlando Hudson is much, much better than Matt Tolbert.
+1
My only worry is, the Twins could trade for Robinson Cano and Gardy would still start Nick “Yes-He’s-My-Love-Child-And-He-Has-The_DNA-To-Prove_It” Punto.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
Crazy Stupid Idea
If we don’t get O-Hud and the Nats do…we could trade for Guzman (for cheap). The’ve got their SS of the future and O-Hud at second. He’s 31 (32 in March), willing to move to 2b, and he’s hit .305 w/ a .334OBP over the last 3 years. BUT, he had shouler surgery last fall. I know this is crazy talk, but I thought I’d throw that out there. Just hoping they make an upgrade at 2b….any upgrade.
I agree!
Anythings better then Punto! Tolbert is absolutley JUNK! I still hope we bring back Crede for cheap 1 million…….Can anyone tell me how Pavano is worth 7 million…….I mean, I don’t mind brining him back but for 7 million GET REAL! We should Trade Glen WET The Bed Perkins to…. we have no need for him…..atleast get a draft pick or even a minor leaguer! Any news on Neshek?? I thought Duensing Pitched great last year and they say Liriano is back to form so it should be an interesting spring training…whoever don’t make the squad should be sent to the Pen. for either a long inning releiver or another short inning lefty!
Update from mlb traderumors
The Rockies are out:
3:53pm: The Rockies are out on Hudson as well as Felipe Lopez, writes Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post.
Meanwhile, Nationals manager Jim Riggleman said on Sirius XM’s MLB Home Plate show today that GM Mike Rizzo “feels confident that we’re going to get [a Hudson deal] done,” but other teams are interested and taking a lower-than-expected contract “might be a little bit of a hard pill to swallow” for the player.
Just get it done..
…we have 3-4mil left in the budget and that should be good to land Hudson or Lopez. Let’s make it happen! And before the MLB The Show roster deadline!
