Tolleson Man Out for Thome, A's Claim Him
Story via the Star Tribune
The Oakland Athletics on Monday claimed infielder Steven Tolleson off waivers from the Twins. The Twins tried to get Tolleson through waivers to clear space on their 40-man roster to add desiginated hitter Jim Thome, who could officially sign as soon as Tuesday.
Hitting .270 with 6 homers as a 26 year old in AAA, while simultaneously moving more to the outfield from the infield made Tolleson expendable.

I was
really hoping they were in the midst of arranging a trade to clear this spot. I don’t know any more about Tolleson than the numbers listed above, but it just seems wasteful to let any prospect slip away.
Oh well, maybe next time….if they pick up a FA infielder, they’ll have to make another move anyway.

The dangers
The dangers of filling the 40-man.
"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all."

Not a great prospect
He’s 26. He’s had one good stretch in the AFL. Otherwise, he’s had a half season of AAA and he’s never had a very good year. He’s had decent years, but nothing special. He doesn’t have a position. His “natural” position is a position of organizational surplus. In short, he’s no great loss and he’ll get an opportunity this way.

He won't be a great loss but
we didn’t need to loss Him. Their is NO reason to have DeLosSantos on the roster!!! No one would have put him on the 25 man roster for a full year. Also, I’m not sure Burnett or Guerra need to be protected yet? LoekVanMil would have been a long shot to stay on a 25 man roster all year too. The point is these guys have some value, we got nothing. Who goes next if we sign a FA. -Crede Don’t fill the roster in winter.

de los Santos was subject to the minor league Rule 5 draft
Burnett and Guerra need to be protected. They both were signed in 2005, and have five years of minor league experience (though Guerra spent his first year in the VSL).
I don’t think you worry about future utility players getting a chance with another organization. If you lose a future starter, that stings. But utility guys are easy to replace.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
your right De Los Santos
I feel if De Los Santos was taken in rule 5 draft it would be no big loss. He may never be a utility player. Time will tell.

He's the only true shortstop prospect in the system
According to Mike Radcliff. That includes Trevor Plouffe. When a system only has one true shortstop prospect, you have to hang onto him.
Now, they’ve signed Sano and Polanco, but they’re six years away. de los Santos should see the majors in 2011.

Hudson or Lopez
can’t be added without a trade or designating someone for assignment. I don’t see a lot of easy choices to clear a 40 man spot.
Butera
Tolbert
Casilla(trade)
Perkins(trade)
Perkins
I’d be fine with dealing Perkins to make room for O-Dog. It would show that we’re having a little more confidence in Liriano. Maybe we can get some extra cash for Perkins to give to Mauer ;)
by John Veldhuis on Feb 2, 2010 11:20 AM EST up reply actions
If Tolleson was claimed
Any of those 4 woudl be, except for Butera but for some reason the Twins like to keep a million catchers on their 40 man. I would hope they could put Butera through waivers and if someone claimed him easily find another AA/AAA/AAAA level catcher.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
hmmm...
So Tolleson gives fischean an autograph at Twins Fest. Days later he’s no longer on the roster… Keep fischean away from Mauer!!! hahaha

AAHHHH
I was at that game about 10 rows up just past 3rd base. Freaking out as I saw the bouncer knowing Span could beat it out, worst case (or so I thought). When I saw Jeter go home then saw where Punto was I got that awful rush of nervous stomach acid. Worst moment I’ve ever been at the dome for.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
That's the thing
He’s done some good things here. But when I think of Nick Punto, it’s plays like that. And the more I think about them, the more I remember. Like all the times he’s failed to bunt and got a guy thrown out as a result. Or all the times he’s slid into first on the back end of a DP. Or all the times he’s whiffed to end a scoring threat. He’s bound to make one play like that in every series.

Tolleson
A minor loss. The Twins already have Tolbert. They have Singleton and Dinkelman in the wings, not to mention Gardenhire. Plus, Plouffe, Casilla, Macri is still around.
The A’s have to keep Tolleson on their 40-man roster, and they are looking for back-up infielders.
Oh, the Twins also have Hughes, another manwithout a home. Tolleson and Hughes could, conceivably, be considered the same player.
Butera. If the Twins would lose Butera and have to promote Ramos for even a short time…they basically have no one competent at AA or AAA.
I’m sure the Twins will be looking at a few more minor league free agents, as rosters are finalized befroe spring training and the last few free agents are signed and more players jettisoned. They could use a lefty or two for the minors, maybe another AAAA starter, an outfielder and or OF/DH/1B…plus a couple of catchers. They’ve signed like, what, two minor league free agents, both coming off injuries who could conceivably (again that word) start somewhere other than AAA Rochester.
Visit www.TwinsCards.com and check out "rosters" to see my collection!
Hughes>>>Tolleson
Hughes has had some very good years and has way more power than Tolleson. Tolleson might have a little better glove. But I’d much rather have Hughes, and so, it seems, do the Twins. Both were on the 40 man roster. Of the two, the Twins thought Tolleson was more expendable.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
+1
I’d much rather keep Hughes around. If we had some injuries, say to Thome and/or Cuddyer, I could see Hughes coming up to fill in as DH. I also suspect Hughes’ roster spot is safe now, if we decide to pick up Hudson or Felipe/Jose Lopez, it would be Casilla or Tolbert who would be waived.
by Adam Peterson on Feb 2, 2010 12:50 PM EST up reply actions
I can live with it
I would have preferred that Tolleson make it through waivers, but I think the Twins made the correct decision here. Tolleson’s skills are largely redundant compared to players above (Casilla, Tolbert) and below (Dinkelman, Singleton). The big winner here may be Brian Dinkelman, who is now penciled in as the every day 2B in Rochester. With Tolleson around, one would expect that finding time for Dinkelman as well as Luke Hughes is easier with the Red Wings.
Who makes the team?
Right now the Twins don’t need Casilla AND Tolbert. Aren’t they both out of options?
Tolbert has an option left
He was added to the 40 man in 2007. He spent time in AA in 2008, but I believe that was an injury rehab, not an option. He spent all of 2008 on the MLB roster (or DL). He was optioned in 2009. He can be optioned in 2010.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
Yes
He was added to the 40 man roster after 2007. Regardless of whether he was optioned in 2008, he has at least one option left. It doesn’t appear to me that he was optioned in 2008, looks like a DL + rehab stint.
by Adam Peterson on Feb 2, 2010 6:59 PM EST up reply actions
As it stands right now
I think it would be one of four options:
1. Go with 11 pitchers to start the season. Tolbert and Casilla both make the team.
2. 12 pitchers, Tolbert to AAA.
3. 12 pitchers, waive Casilla.
4. 12 pitchers, no backup CF. Tolbert and Casilla both make the team.
I don’t think option #3 makes much sense i the absence of another move. Since we have Harris and Punto, if we kept Casilla it would give us flexibility at all infield positions, same as Tolbert. Option #2 is most likely, IMO, with Tolbert promoted at the first opportunity.
