Orlando Hudson Excitement Open Thread Friday

I just thought the other thread was getting a crowded, and seeing as Jesse was too lazy to write a new post but instead chose to just put a note on Adam's I thought this might help. haha j/k lol and all those things.

I wasn't happy with but was ok with having a Punto or Harris at #2 in the batting order.  What I was most afraid of was a Span injury leading to a Punto, Harris 1 and 2.  This will help prevent that from happening in the event Span gets injured we've still got a good leadoff option.  This is now a lineup that can withstand a few injuries here and there as Thome protects most of our big guns and now we have 2 viable leadoff options.

Who goes off the 40-man

My guess is they’ll try to trade Casilla for a PTBNL. Worst case, they can DFA him and buy a little time.

I think it'll probably be Casilla, too.

He will forever be remembered for the game against the Sox in 08 and 163: Take 2, though. Never forget.

although

with the reports that Butera’s defense is questionable, it could be him too. Butera hits so badly that his defense must be on par with a Henry Blanco or Yadier Molina. Butera could probably slip through waivers. My vote goes to Casilla or Butera.

I am really hoping that Wilson Ramos starts the year with the Twins if Morales has not yet recovered.

Where did you hear about Buter's defense?

Curious. I’ve only heard good things.

kind of a confusing post on 33M-MVP's part

He did compare him to Yadier Molina so that speaks well

CHONE projects Butera for

a line of 202/259/290 or -40 runs below average. As a regular he’d project at -1.6 WAR. His MLE is 167/223/235. I think he’d pass through waivers and if not, no loss.

by Jon Kammerer on Feb 5, 2010 10:18 PM EST up reply actions

Now that's what I call replaceable.

I think you nailed it: even if he didn’t slip through waivers, you could easily replace him with someone of equal or greater value. Catchers who will never ever be able to hit big leaugue pitching just aren’t that valuable. It’s unlikely anyone would claim him, and if they did, we could get someone just as good off the trash heap.

Butera must stay because of Morales' injury

I suppose they could DFA Butera and sign an MFA catcher like Jose Molina if he doesn’t pass through waivers. I suppose they could also do the same with Pridie, DFA him in the hopes he passes through waivers. Sign Endy Chavez to a MFA deal if he doesn’t.

Don't need Butera

Remember we’re talking about someone backing up Mauer for a few weeks until Morales is ready. Unless Mauer is injured, he wouldn’t even play at all. And if Mauer were injured, Butera is the last guy you’d want starting for weeks on end. He can’t hit a lick. If Mauer were hurt they’d hire a veteran castoff for nothing who would hit better than Butera anyway. Maybe Butera has value in handling a minor league staff. But he doesn’t have much value in the bigs.

So Lehman or de San Miguel would be called up in case of injury to Mauer or Ramos?

That’s scary.

doesn't it have to be Perkins?

1. We don’t need him at all (same as Casilla)
2. Didn’t he spend most of the winter bashing the Twins?

Perkins would make a nice lefty long man

Which suits his stuff and make-up better than the starter role, imho.

good god

you dont just drop a pitcher of Perkins’ value – no matter what you think of his personality.

He could easily be #4 pitcher in a number of AL organizations or a #3 in some NL organizations. You dont just drop that kind of value. If you dont want him trade him.

by montanatwinsfan on Feb 5, 2010 7:42 PM EST up reply actions

Even so....

To many people think Perkins is expendable. He is a solid starter. You don’t just let him go for pennies and see what you can get to open up a roster spot. He has had success at the Major League level.

When one of the members of the rotation go down, which 3 served a good amount of time on the DL last year, I think alot of fans will hope we have a Perkins to fill in.

I’d rather see Tolbert, as much as he doesn’t deserve it, or another utility player who pretty much has met his ceiling go then Perkins.

Unless its in a trade where we get equal value back.

by Joshua P on Feb 6, 2010 12:20 AM EST up reply actions

Now is not the time to trade Perkins

His value is depressed by the injury and the grievance. If you trade him, you do so only after he has success for a couple three months in the majors. That likely will be as the long man in the bullpen.

Space in the bullpen to start the year?

You have to guess Nathan, Guerrier, Crain, Mijares, Rauch and Condrey will take up 6 of 7 spots, assuming we go with 12 pitchers. Liriano has the inside track on the #5 spot in the rotation, meaning Duensing, Swarzak and Manship probably start the year in AAA. Which means Perkins for the last bullpen spot with the big club. This makes sense to me.

by Adam Peterson on Feb 6, 2010 2:07 PM EST up reply actions

That's the way I see it

With Neshek starting the year on the DL. Condrey does have an option, so, when Neshek is ready, Condrey might need to go down.

While I think we'll try to trade Casilla and/or Perkins

I imagine we’ve been trying to do this all offseason. I’m beginning to think Luke Hughes is the expendable one, and we may be able to sneak him through waivers after his power outage last year. But since Casilla is out of options, he’s the likely drop if we can’t trade him.

by Adam Peterson on Feb 6, 2010 8:00 AM EST up reply actions

A few thoughts

Quite exciting to have a lineup that appears to be 7 deep. I’m expecting some regression from Mauer, Cuddyer, and Kubel, but improving the middle infield from replacement level to league average (or maybe better) will help make up for that.

This has a chance to be the best Twins offense in recent years.

However, I doubt this team winds up as good as the 2006 team. That team was 2nd in the league in run prevention…this team will not be. The pitching just isn’t good enough.

Still, I feel good about this team. I actually am optimistic for once. I have high hopes for Liriano; if you asked me to bet on who their best starter will be, I’d have a hard time picking between Liriano and Slowey, who I think are the most talented guys.

I think they have a chance to hold their own in run prevention and be in the top 4 or so in runs scored.

Kubel

I think your wrong about Kubel, yes we cant count on Mauer hitting 360 every year but i saw somewhere that Kubels OPS is like 150 points higher when he plays the outfield and this was basically his 2nd year as a fulltime player so i think he can be even better

by bighead306 on Feb 5, 2010 6:26 PM EST up reply actions

Kubel regression

I’m on the fence with this one. Last year really felt like the break out year we’ve all been waiting for from Kubel. Considering the hitter he was before the knee injury, there’s a good chance this is the “real” Jason Kubel. And with some real work to improve against LHP, an improvement there may cancel out other regression.

by Adam Peterson on Feb 6, 2010 8:04 AM EST up reply actions

If anything, given age/experience and better protection, Kubel should improve a little

But it’s dangerous to predict improvement from everybody. So I have him as about the same, just to hedge my bets.

Of those 3

Cuddy is the one most likely to regress. I think Kubel will improve, especially as there’s plenty of room against lefties. Mauer may drop off a bit, but he’s only 26, so it is still possible that the guy gets better… kind of scary to think about that. Either way, baring injury, I would not expect Mauer to be much worse than he was last year. I think this team is more poised for progression than regression. Delmon looked very good towards the end of the year. He made a lot of changes in his batting stance and started taking more pitches (even though he did not walk as much as we’d like). He cut down on the Ks quite a bit. I think he’s primed for a monster season. Slowey was having a breakout season prior to the injury. Morneau probably won’t go down again for a month. There’s good reason to believe that Hardy will bounce back. There’s hope for Liriano too. Baker will probably not get off to such a horrific start again either.

There’s a lot of reason to believe this team will be an elite team this year.

by diehardtwinsfan on Feb 6, 2010 12:51 PM EST up reply actions

I think Cuddy will regress some

You can count on him to have a slow start anyway. That’s not regression, that’s just him.
