My Line Up Thoughts and Expectations for 2010 (and Nicknames)
1. Denard Span CF, should hit around .300 with maybe six or seven homers and 50-60 RBI. As far as defense goes the guy is sweet 'nuff said. Nickname: D-SPAN outfield coverage 24-7
2. Orlando Hudson 2B, Should hit between .270 and .290, .300 would be sweet, add a dozen long balls and 70 RBI's and possibly a gold glove Nickname: (I have not thought of anything funny yet. I am open to ideas)
3. Joe Mauer C, The dude is the second coming of Christ need I say more? Nickname: Baby Jesus
4. Justin Morneau 1B, .300 batting average 40 dingers and 120 RBI's. While he is close to gold glove contention I dont think he is quite there yet, but he might do it why not? Nickname: The Doctor
5. Michael Cuddyer RF, .250 for the low end .280 for the high end. I am guessing 25 bombs and 90 RBI. Nickname: Cuddybear
6. Jason Kubel DH, I am guessing Thome will cut down Kubel's at bats a bit. I am going to go with a .260 average and 20 homers. When he does play left I will say he is ok at best. Nickname: I have never thought of one for Kubel I will take ideas
7. J.J. Hardy SS, a bit of a question mark. I am hoping he will have a bounce back year. these numbers are optimistic: .275 average, 18 homers and 80 RBI. Great Defense.Nickname: Detective Hardy, helping the Twins solve the mystery of how to win the World Series.
8. Delmon Young LF, I think and hope this should be a make it or break year for Delmon. If he stinks we need to cut our loses and let Thome DH full time. My guess for his numbers: .240 average, 12 homers and 60 RBI. Sub par defense. Nickname: Elmon (he got no D)
9. Whoever 3B, Punto, Tolbert, or Harris. Whatever we get from any of these guys will be bonus. I am still hoping but not optimistic the Twins will bring back Crede.

I've always called Kubel "Patches", because of that awful beard.
Cuddyer, Cuddles.
Tolbert, Tol-Bear.
I’m a big fan of D-Span and Elmon!
O-Hud already has O-Dog
Bat-Girl already did Dr. Morneau. Twitchy McXanax for Joe Nathan is a Bat-Girl classic. I forgot about that one.
Brandon Herrors works for me.

Kubel nick name
I told my dad last year that when Kubel has a buzz hair cut he looks looks kind of crazy. Reminds me of Rodney Farva in Super Troopers. Ramrod or Shenanigans.
Let's just hope that this isn't the case.

"What is best in life?"
"To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women."
This is confusing....
so he has no D at the beginning, but he has D at the end? Like he plays D at the ends of games, after just hanging out at the beginning?

Kubel
Let me just preface by saying I have never met Mr. Kubel face-to-face, and my impressions of him as a big leaguer are very good. I have a lot of respect for a guy who can compete at that level, and hit a ball that far.
That being said, around my house, he’s known as Jason “White-Trash” Kubel. Just looking at that sick, patchy, red beard and those squinty eyes just makes me want to punch him in the face. It’s way too easy to picture him in torn up blue-jeans and a cut-off flannel shirt with a camo “Ducks Unlimited” cap sitting outside of a beat-up single-wide with a case of Budweiser (cans, of course) at his feet.

Really? Nobody likes "White-Trash"?
…damn, I’ve always really hoped that would catch on.

I’m sorry but projecting Delmon to hit .240 is the worst projection I have ever seen. He’s a career .290 hitter, and has always hit better outdoors than indoors since he’s been in Minnesota.
Right
He’ll hit between .280 and .300. He’ll have an OBP between .300 and .320.
The projection also shorts him in the HR department. Considering he hit 14 last year after not hitting one in the first three months, I think we can bank on between 18 and 20. I wouldn’t be surprised if he hits 25.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
I would
agree with this.
And I think is not the point anyone is trying to make here, but its something I’ve noticed the past little while when people are picking on Young. I know Delmon is no Joe Mauer, but Joe was given the opportunity to “build up” his power numbers, everyone said “they’ll come” and it seemed like everyone was really surprised he hit for power “so early” last season already. Well, Delmon is 2 years younger still, so why is he not being given the opportunity to “build up” some power?
He was the #1 prospect in the league during the 2005 & 2006 seasons, and keep in mind that the guy lost his mother in the first half of the season. That may not be a good enough reason to not be a good teammate or to not actively listen to your batting coaches’ advice, but I was sure willing to give him a pass under the circumstances. Sure enough he turned it around, and really could come out huge offensively this year. Reports said he lost 30 pounds this offseason? Of course, so did Boof a couple years ago, and that didn’t get him far…
by WindyCityTwinsFan on Feb 8, 2010 2:31 PM EST up reply actions
Exactly
I have been saying this the last 2 seasons, every one is always ragging on him with these lofty expectations. He was already playing in the Majors at 19-20, he never got 3-4 years in the Minors like most big time prospects comming out of high school do. Also, struggled huge first half of last season when his mother died. Now they are saying he has dropped 30 lbs, and worked his a** off this off season.
Really The worst you have ever heard?
I have 0 faith in Elmon he has proved nothing
by Ryan Conway on Feb 10, 2010 11:44 AM EST up reply actions
He’s proved he is a .290 hitter, not .240. You must be one of those fans who expected him to win a MVP by now, or built up unrealistic expectations without thinking he ever deserved any time to develop. Yes, it is the worst projection I have ever heard absolutely no reason to believe he would hit 50 points below his career average. He still ended up at 284 last season, after he had that terrible stretch after his mom passed.
OK
I hope I am wrong. I hope he kicks ass this year and you can say I was wrong. But I have no faith in him right now.
by Ryan Conway on Feb 10, 2010 11:29 PM EST up reply actions
I agree with dyoung21
He hasn’t had his breakout year or anything, but he is coming into camp 29 pounds lighter this year, and he ended last year on a tear. I definitely don’t see any reason for regression from him this year. Especially not 50 points below his average. I expect him to have a better year than last year.
Kubel hitting .260?
That’s pretty low. He’s a career .278 hitter and he hit .300 last year. I don’t see any reason for that much regression. I would probably put him around .285 with 23-26 dingers.
Thome
Thome is going to take some at bats from Kubel. I hope Kubel has another good year but I just am wondering if Thome’s presence will affect him.
by Ryan Conway on Feb 10, 2010 11:31 PM EST up reply actions
I kinda doubt it.
I think Thome ends up taking more of Elmon’s at-bats, with Kubel playing the OF a little more this year. Kubel has been one of our best hitters for the last three years. I don’t see Gardy taking him out of the lineup very often. His bat is too valuable.
Remember, we are in a division with a LOT of RH pitching. We are going to want to go as lefty as we can more days than not.
