Playoffs
Ok, so the playoffs are always a crap shoot. I pretty much just went with my gut there, and I like the short rotations the Giants and Mariners have to offer. Pitching is magnified in the playoffs, and I think those rotations, provided they stay healthy, could have an edge.
Ya, I agree.
They have added so much to what was already a winning team. Now the WS might be a bit ambitious, but I wouldn’t wanna face Hernandez, Lee, Bedard in a playoff series…
but we have
The Franchise, Ole Chef, Big Game Blackbeard, Carls Jr, and Slowball!!! :)

They’ll have speed, defense and pitching. They’ll at least contend for the wild card. But the Angels are weaker this year, do they should contend for the division.

I disagree. Seattle will be improved this year, with Lee and Figgins, but they lost a productive Beltre and Branyan. Slight improvement, but I think the Angels and Rangers both finish in front of the Mariners this year. Bold pick though.

My thoughts on projecting the way I did was the fact that the Angels lost alot, so I don’t see any way that they put up the 97 wins that they did last year. 17 less might be a stretch, but anyway, and with the Rangers, I feel like although their young core will be improved they lost about their most reliable starter, so pitching could be a question mark, but they still get a boost of five wins. As for Seattle, they went 85-77 last year, and with all the moves they have made, I don’t see any reason that they can’t win eight more games than that. As for the playoffs, simply put they will be playing playoff type baseball all year, so I feel that if they make it there they can make a run. Gotta be bold somewhere…saying the Yankees would win it all again would be too boring for my taste
Figgins > Beltre
And I don’t know how you can say Branyan is more valuable than Lee, who was the top pitcher in the AL in 2008 and the top pitcher in the NL in 2009. The Mariners will have one of the top two or three rotations in baseball. That’s saying something.

Ms won’t be abysmal, but winning the west??? I somehow doubt that. The west has three (possibly four depending on Oakland’s gambles) decent teams in it, they are going to beat each other up a lot. I would not be surprised if the winner clears it with less than 90 games…

The team with the best pitching will emerge victorious
With Lackey gone in Anaheim and Lee added to Seattle, it makes the Mariners the team to beat. The Mariners might have the two best starters in the league, and Bedard is not a bad third starter. Add speed and defense to that equation, and they will be tough.

Damn Mariners!
This is OUR year!
I’m hoping for a repeat of 1987 myself.

Just pointing out.
You have the Twins at 92 wins which is the lowest in the AL and you have the Yankees at 98 which is the highest. Wouldnt the Twins then play the Yankees and the Mariners play the Bo-Sox? How do you like our chances against the Yankees?

Good point
I think I had gone through and had all those numbers differently, and then went back and made some last minute changes. I’ll correct quick.
I added one win to our total, taking another away from the royals. I also took one win away from each of the mariners and rangers and added them to the angels. This is probably more realistic now. But thanks for the catch.
Yup no problem

Sorry
In my mistake I didn’t notice that you had asked that. Um, this pains me more than just about anything in the world, but I don’t know that I l ike our chances against the Yankees still…I mean they did sweep us last year, although if we played them another 10 times with last years rosters I say it would go something like 7-3 in their favor. That said, we are definately improved, and they aren’t a lot worse, but I would say their team last year was better. I think that we can split from them during the regular season, but the playoffs I give them the slight edge just based on experience. I think that our teams are fairly close talent-wise, with them maybe having a slight edge, but I give them the edge in the playoffs based on that experience. That said, I think we can beat them, and much more likely than last year, but I still give them a slight upper hand.
I don't get all the love for Chicago
They have pretty good pitching, but they are old and S-L-O-W.

A Full Year of Peavy
I think will give them at least a handful more wins, and they shored up some holes on offense. I think they are our main competition for the division, unless the tigers sign damon, then the argument could be made for them as well. Simply put I think they are better than they were last year, even if they are aging, and the 86 wins I gave them are only seven more than last year.
I guess I'm not that high on Peavy
After pitching in the NL in the Grand Canyon, It’s going to be a rude awakening pitching against the AL in a park where the wind blows out.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
true
but I think Peavy is the real deal. That said, I think the Twins are better.

I wasn't either
when they picked him up at the trade deadline, in fact I laughed it off because he wasn’t likely to make many starts since he was hurt at the time and wasn’t going to give them a boost, but he came out for a couple games right there at the end and his stuff was FILTHY.
Baseball-reference.com says he put in 20 innings in 3 starts, 18 Ks, 6 BBs, 11 hits, 0.850 WHIP, 1.35 ERA – 2 of these starts were against the Tigers, the other was the Royals.
And I’m not sure if you guys remember, but the Tigers were in a division title race at the time, so they weren’t supposed to be a push-over – I can’t recall who ended up winning that division, who was it????
by WindyCityTwinsFan on Feb 10, 2010 3:05 PM EST up reply actions
Division race, yes
But their offense wasn’t very good…
by diehardtwinsfan on Feb 10, 2010 4:33 PM EST up reply actions
They aren't that slow
They don’t have Dye and Thome anymore.
Pierre, Rios, Beckham, and Ramirez certainly aren’t slow. Quentin and Andruw Jones have Cuddyer-like speed. Konerko is molasses but Thome is even slower.
They aren’t fast but they used to be much slower.
Braves under 500?
Sure they lost Vazquez, but they get a full season of Hanson and Huddy this year. They had the 2nd best record in the National league after the all star break. I’m just sayin I thought that was a little harsh.
Go Twins!
You mark that frame an 8, and you're entering a world of pain.
Point taken
I look at Atlanta’s roster, and I feel like they won’t do as well as last year, and they might be in the toughest division in the NL, unless all of the Mets get injured again in August. I feel like they could definately make a playoff push, but not likely. Also, I based my amounts of wins and losses off of the same record in interleague games to make it easier on myself, so there were less wins to work with in the NL, and less horrible teams. I look at the NL like the Eastern conference in the NBA. There will be a few great teams that stick out and distance themselves from the pack, but the majority will hover around .500.
But on that note, I did remember about having Hudson back, but didn’t think about Hanson. Granted there is no way of knowing how he will develop, i think it is worth bumping up a couple wins, which I will do.
Appreciate the Input
I really appreciate all the input, you guys are bringing up some interesting things I had not thought of. These standings were done on a whim when I should have been doing homework, so I haven’t thoughten through everything fully. Any input you guys give me is helpful and I really do appreciate it. So feel free to be as critical as you want, I will try to respond with what I based my predictions on as best I can.
Well since you brought it up...
…you’ve only got the Twins playing 162 games this year…seems like we’re really on a role here, so maybe you should pencil in that extra game again.

Good Job!
But what makes such W-L postings so tough is the head-to-heads in each division. Do the Yanks/Red Sox play to a drw…oir the Twins/White Sox? Can the Twins, say, dominate in their division but get their butt whipped by everyone in the East, including Toronto…especially if you constantly end up facing the other divisions winners rather than loses in the rotations?

I agree, wins and losses are super tough to predict. I didn’t have a very scientific method, basically what I did was look at last years standings, and looked at whether teams improved or regressed over the offseason. I also took into account injuries from the year before as best I could, for example the Mets. But ya, I was mainly concerned on standings, not on the record. Cuz that is almost a crapshoot in my mind.
WHY...?
Did you EXACTLY copy the thread that I posted just a day or two before you? It’s a fun idea thought, huh?
Huh?
I guess I’m not sure what you meant, the only thing I copied was your idea. I was putting off homework and I had saw your predictions earlier so I thought what the heck, I might as well make my own.
LOL
Giants over Phillies in 5
Giants over Cardinals in 7
They don’t have run support. Who will be batting there ?? The ugliest man on the Earth ?? Cain ?? Zito ??
