Around SBN: MLB Trade Deadline: Phils, Astros complete Roy Oswalt deal

Marlins 5, Twins 4

The Twins scored four runs in the fourth, but single runs for the Marlins in the fifth and sixth pushed the home Fish past Minnesota, 5-4.

THUMBS UP

  • Denard Span walked and rapped two singles in three trips to the plate. He is now hitting .600 this spring. Denard Span is a MAN who built the WHEEL OUT OF BRAWN.
  • Jason Kubel hit a three-run home run, going 1-4 for the day.
  • Wilson Ramos had a pair of doubles, one of them an RBI double.
  • Anthony Swarzak struck out all three batters he faced.
  • Kyle Waldrop pitched a scoreless inning.

THUMBS AMIDSHIPS

  • Francisco Liriano struck out six in three innings and didn't walk anyone, but also gave up three runs including a two-run homer. He also struck out at the plate, and left four guys on base. (Not that anyone really cares about his hitting.)
  • Brian Duensing gave up two runs, but struck out three in two innings of work.

THUMBS DOWN

  • Matt Tolbert was 0-2, struck out, and is still in search of his first spring hit. At this point, if he's on the Opening Day roster, we will have conclusive proof that he has compromising photos of Gardy.

We got it.

Not the first time we’ve run into this…we’ve actually seen much worse.

Tolbert

Tolbert has definitely laid a log this Spring, but who of our middle infielders has stepped up and earned a spot?

Tolbert – .000/.133/.000
Casilla – .118/.250/.176
Singleton – .000/.000/.000
Dinkleman – .300/.417/.300
Plouffe – .222/.300/.444
Hughes – .214/.214/.214

I mean, even the projected starters (Hardy and Hudson) haven’t gotten it going yet…

I know — small sample size at its finest, but starting to wonder who’s going to head north in that bench slot.

by gbg on Mar 15, 2010 11:56 PM EDT reply actions

Tolbert has an option

so he will need to do more to prove he belongs on the team. I’m not a huge Casilla fan, but it wouldn’t make sense for the team to give up on him unless Tolbert shows them something.

No middle infielder has stepped up

If I was the GM, I would look long and hard to keeping Valencia and moving Punto to the utility role.

Excellent point

Hadn’t thought of that, but might be the best way to go.

by gbg on Mar 16, 2010 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions

I'd think a lot about it...

but this is a small sample size too. I wouldn’t cut Casilla just yet. He still offers us a few different things, like speed.

I’m a bit surprised they haven’t had him play more CF yet though.

And of course, the elephant in the room is this: what has Punto really done any better than Casilla this spring so far? And he’s being paid roughly $3.5M more.

by DJSkillz on Mar 16, 2010 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Starters

Hudson .176 / .263 / .235
Harris .308 / .333 / .462
Hardy .214 / .214 / .214
Punto .143 / .333 / .286

How about he gives the starting job to Harris and keeps Punto in the utility role? I think Harris has proven more than Valencia at this point.

Ramos has clearly outplayed Butera so far.

"Practice?!?!?!, I mean, we're talking about practice, not a game, practice"

(Imagine Allen Iverson’s voice).

Spring training is practice. They are all warming up. No-one worries if Mauer goes 0-10, or whatever. I’m sure someone out there has done a study of the correlation between spring training success and regular season statistics, but I haven’t. I’m still willing to go out on a limb and say that we shouldn’t be using ST stats to make our decisions. The coaches are watching the players, and hopefully can recognize the players that are doing the right things.

by snolls on Mar 16, 2010 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

It is about approach

If you’re completely messed up at the plate and can’t field the ball (Tolbert) they’re not taking you north. If you’re seeing the ball well and just off on your swing (Hudson) they’re not going to worry.

by DJL44 on Mar 16, 2010 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

DENARD!!!

Glad he got the extension. Favorite player (besides Joe of course).

For some strange I really like Swarzak. He had an up and down season last year. Maybe I am still high from his first start. lol
Do you think he can get into the rotation?

Ski-U-Mah!

by CrazyCollegian on Mar 16, 2010 12:32 AM EDT reply actions

Swarzak

For Some reason I can picture him in the bullpen. He control his low 90’s fastball well and it has some movement. He doesn’t have a go to secondary pitch. To me that seems like a 7th inning guy.

I’d like to see him start out in AAA to work on his secondary offerings. When a started is injured, plug Swarzak or Duensing in there.

by Kyleb_82 on Mar 16, 2010 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Liriano

Not to concerned with the hits Liriano gave up. The 0 walks and 6 K’s in 3 innings is encouraging. To me it shows he was being aggressive.

Good to see

He’s getting back to his old form. Do you see his role as a Starting pitcher or closer?

def

a starting pitcher.

Injury concerns

Obviously if he is back to his bad self (bad in the good way, of course), using him as a starter would be ideal, but if his arm is going to curl up and die at the end of the season again, maybe he is more valuable out of the pen. Good thing I’m not a doctor and don’t need to figure it out. :)

by dctwin on Mar 16, 2010 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Starter

If he truly has turned the corner, as many suggest. Then I think he is much much more valuable as a starter. This team could do some scary things with a true ace and that lineup. Nathan hurts, but honestly I think Rauch could do a fine job. Neshek is the dark horse. I think he has what it takes to be a dominate closer.

by .mnqwerd on Mar 16, 2010 1:42 AM EDT reply actions

Dominant

The adjective, not the verb.

I think it would be a shame to waste Neshek as a closer, he’s almost an automatic out for RHB and I would like to see them leveraging that platoon advantage as much as possible. That means he stays as a setup guy but it probably means more wins.

by DJL44 on Mar 16, 2010 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions

+1

Same with Mijares for LHBs. Rauch or Guerrier or outside organization (my preference).
