Orioles 3, Twins 1

One run on 8 hits wasn't enough this afternoon, as the Twins lost to a depleted Baltimore Orioles squad 3-1 in Fort Myers. While most of the Orioles stayed home for an intrasquad game (only one expected opening day starter, Nolan Reimold played), the Twins started five expected regulars (Hudson, Mauer, Cuddyer, Kubel and Harris) and never really got anything started offensively.

Studs:

Scott Baker: The Twins opening day starter was sharp, 4 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 SO.
Joe Mauer: After a brief recovery from a foul tip to the shoulder, 2 singles in 3 AB.
Ben Revere: Continues his hot spring, 2-3 with a bunt single.
Pat Neshek: Pitched one perfect inning, two fly balls and a grounder.

Duds:

Clay Condrey: 1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 BB, game up a 2 run home run to Chad Moeller.
Michael Cuddyer: 0-3 with a throwing error that put the Orioles up 1-0 in the 5th.
Juan Portes: 0-4 with two strikeouts.

What Can I Say?

These things happen. This Orioles team is likely one that we will see in the future. Besides, they are all battling for a roster spot.

Thumbs down is harsh for Cuddyer

Cuddle’s stats were a little misleading in this one. I was at the game and can say that even though he went 0 for 3, all three of his at bats were rockets that got caught right in front of the 405 in center field. He seemed to be seeing the ball alright.

I’ll give you that the throwing error was bad.

P.S. I’ve been reading TT for a year or so, but I’ve finally decided to get my bum in gear and join the commenting party.
