Revere getting another start, that's good to see.

Cuddles getting some time in CF in case of emergency.

It is interesting

to see Revere getting so many starts. If Delmon does not perform, could he possibly be gone by the trade deadline and Revere brought up to replace him? It will be interesting to watch the development of this kid.

I'm not sure, I suppose it's possible.

But I think it’s pretty early to speculate as to how Revere makes his MLB debut. I think Young has a real chance to break out this year, and I hope he does.

I’m looking forward to seeing how Revere continues to develop this season too. The outfield in general will be a very intriguing spot to watch for the Twins over the next two or three years.

by Jesse on Mar 20, 2010 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh I hope

Young breaks out this year as well. It gives the Twins several options to play with then. But I am really starting to like Revere and would not mind at all if he was with the Twins by midseason.

Revere is a younger version of Gomez, minus the electricity, and Gomez minus the bat.

I'd say Jones gets the call before Revere

If Delmon struggles, I could see Kubel in left more often and Thome or Ramos DHing.

That made me Laugh. :]

I’ve backed Young all along, but times up. Put-up or shut-up. You’ve got one month to show some pop, or the Twins need to shop him and go with Kuble.

I thought

spring training didn’t matter….

I do think spring matters

That’s why I’m pissed it appears the Team is set. I’d like to see more guys earn their spot, inclucing Young. We’ve got some young guys knocking at the door, will Gardy open it. Looks like the’ll have to knock harder in the minors.

by b1 on Mar 20, 2010 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

To that point..

Delmon does usually earn his spot in ST. This year, no, but in previous years he has always been the 3rd or 4th best hitter during spring training (Mauer & Morneau always and sometimes one other guy ahead of him).

I’m kind of hoping that since he’s not doing so well, maybe we’ll see a change..in a good way. Maybe for once he’ll have a good first half.

The one game that has been televised, Delmon’s stance looked pretty much like the second half, but I think he had a lot of pre-pitch movement. A lot more than previous years. His arms were really bouncing up and down. I think it was too much and might be hurting him right now. I guess I’ll have to wait and see until the next televised game.

Is it possible they are showcasing revere to enhance his trade value?

by bballfan on Mar 20, 2010 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

One more thing.

Will Slama get a chance or will I be Piss-off about that too? If Nathan’s out, can’t we get Slama some innings against so big league hitters, or is that a shut door to like with Valencia? As you can tell I favore our mionr league players. I love our system and I’d love these guys to get a serious look. Thats why I get piss at some of the pick-up players we get (I don’t think we need)condry and that some don’t seem to get a real chance to make the team.

by b1 on Mar 20, 2010 11:51 AM EDT reply actions

If I had to guess I'd say Slama will start the year at Rochester, too.

There are a lot of guys with experience that the Twins will lean towards first. But he’ll be one of the first call-ups. I’m excited to see what he can do.

Slama is a good pitcher and all, but he still has not sniffed the major leagues. No telling what might happen. Better for him to season some more before going on the major league grill.

Some guys.....

Like Young…and Punto….will make the major league roster no matter what. They are being paid big bucks and have to play pretty darn hard to play themselves off the team.

Someone like Slama and Waldrop can shine and give the Twins one tough decision.

They need two relievers in the bullpen. One a lefty who can pitch more than an inning (Duensing or Perkins).

The other is now Neshek or someone else temporarily. Looks like Swarzak went down. Manship is still a possibility (nice to have a long man). One would suppose that Neshek should start April and into May at Ft. Myers (warmth) and then New Brit/Rochester before coming back.

Slama is not on the 40-man. That is a big negative for him, right now. All his contemporaries have gone south (Burnett, Delaney, Van Mil)…so it’s just him, Waldrop, Manship and…do the Twins go north with Neshek.

I’m more surprised Hughes, Plouffe and Valencia were cut this early…except, again, all three had little or no chance of going north with the club, who have to decide between Casilla, Tolbert, Jacque Jones basically for one job. They are taking a long and hard look at Revere, and Brock Peterson is hanging about, too!

surprised

that Peterson did not head south before Hughes. I believe Hughes had a shot at a bench role, although Gardy’s thinking might be to groom him in at 2B so that he could come up and play 2B next year.

Peterson

hangs around like some of the catchers. He’s not going to make the team, but Morneau doesn’t have a back-up so Peterson hangs around for the late inning 1B or DH.

by b1 on Mar 20, 2010 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Hughes on the 40 man roster, Peterson isn't

That’s all the farther you need to read into that one.

by DJL44 on Mar 21, 2010 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

It's probably already been said elsewhere...

I’m a little behind on the posts so sorry if you’ve read this somewhere else..

The Twins had to cut those guys because they were on the 40 man and Friday was the deadline to send them down. If any of them had stayed and gotten injured then they’d have to go on the ML DL and may get a year of service time. It’s too much to risk for guys who weren’t going to be here opening day.

by Twins33 on Mar 21, 2010 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm with you, sort of

I didn’t like the Condrey signing and I wanted guys like Slama and Delaney to be given a shot. Maybe not right away, but eventually. I thought we had enough guys within rather than to sign Condrey. It might be a good thing now that Nathan is hurt, but I definitely didn’t like it at first and still kind of don’t.

Like someone else said, Slama isn’t on the 40 man so that makes it tough. Someone else will have to be kicked off of it for Slama to be added. And you know it’s not going to be a guy who shouldn’t be on it.

Interesting inning for Francisco

2 K’s, but a variety of baserunners, a wild pitch, and a long fly ball that the Rays announcers didn’t think Cuddyer would get. They were at least impressed with his range…

by Han Joelo on Mar 20, 2010 1:28 PM EDT reply actions

A better second inning for Liriano. He struck out another hitter and allowed no hits or runs. Through two: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K.

Nice inning for the hitters off of a Major League pitcher

The competition between Casilla and Tolbert is heating up. As for Revere, he may lack the upside of some of the younger guys in the system, but appears to be a pretty sure thing when it comes to hitting.

The Rays announcers said Revere’s brother is a collegiate quarterback, and has been helping Ben with his arm strength. Add in the double off the wall to start the game (wind aided perhaps) and you’ve got a pretty decent package.

by Han Joelo on Mar 20, 2010 2:22 PM EDT reply actions

I personally think Casilla has the spot in the bag unless he really falls apart. Matt Tolbert still doesn’t have a hit this spring, his defense has been less than stellar on occasion, and he has one option remaining (whereas Casilla doesn’t).

by Twins Territory on Mar 20, 2010 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree about Casilla

But I do believe Tolbert collected a couple of hits yesterday. Casilla’s been playing a fair bit of shortstop as well. If he can play slick MI defense, pinch run, and switch hit off the bench (not that you need a pinch hitter, unless Butera is the backup catcher) what more do you need from the 25th man? Punto and Harris can both start/backup third thru second, Casilla in the Middle, apparently Cuddyer in center (with Revere as the long term backup.)

They keep saying Liriano is ‘competing’ for the 5th starter position, but I believe he has easily earned it, and it wasn’t much of a competition, as Duensing hasn’t been given a great deal of opportunity and Perkin’s has pretty much sucked.

So the only drama is in the bullpen…

by Han Joelo on Mar 20, 2010 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep, Liriano is #5 without a doubt. There has been zero competition.

Liriano’s Final Line: 3.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K

I thought he might go four today, but apparently not. I’m not sure what his final pitch count was though. Rauch pitched a one-hit scoreless fourth inning.

Color me speechless

as to why Toby Gardenhire is still at Major league camp aside from being the managers son. Toby should have been sent down long before Hughes/Valencia.

Like Roger pointed out...

Guys on the 40 man who are still in the big league camp, if they get injured, the player gets big league pay and (maybe) service time. Revere, Toby, Peterson, J. Jones, are not on the 40 so there is no risk to keeping them around.

If it were my choice

I would keep Ramos and Butera or Jones with a catcher and cut Casilla free. When you have Punto you don’t need another back-up infielder.

by b1 on Mar 20, 2010 5:39 PM EDT reply actions

Yes you do

need another backup infielder. Sometimes the starters will need a day off and at least one of them will likely have a minor, day-to-day injury. You can’t carry three catchers when you have a guy like Thome who doesn’t have a defensive position. It limits Gardy’s moves way too much. I would love to see Jones succeed, but, realistically, he is almost certainly done.

by Stefa on Mar 20, 2010 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions

There is alot of teams that

carry extra outfielders not infielders on the 25man, most in the N.L. because they need pinch hitters. I think Hardy and Hudson will play everyday, so having just Punto as a back-up is fine. Ditch Casilla and bring in a Bat. Jones,Ramos,Valencia,

by b1 on Mar 20, 2010 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Um, Hardy has been out for a week

with a minor injury. Hudson has also had injury issues on and off. I would not assume they will play every day. I remember how many times the team was short handed last year because of Crede’s various injuries. I have never been a Casilla fan, but I don’t think his sucktitude is reason enough to carry Jones or an extra catcher.

by Stefa on Mar 20, 2010 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

The answer--Punto

This is when Punto should play, as a back-up to Hardy and Hudson. Thus Casilla is still on the bench.

by b1 on Mar 20, 2010 9:13 PM EDT reply actions

pretty hard to do

since Punto can only play one position at one time.

so we have Punto

by 33MorneauMVP on Mar 20, 2010 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

so now we have 3 guys hurt at the same time.

Kuble goes to Lf, Cuddy to CF, Young to RF, Valencia to 3b, Harris and Punto SS and 2B thats why you don’t need Casilla. Give me another one! Who’s on first what’s on second?

by b1 on Mar 20, 2010 9:23 PM EDT reply actions

A)

Valencia is not on the major league roster and a day away, thus, the Twins cannot count on having Valencia for the game. Thus, Harris is playing third with Punto at SS and Drew Butera at 2B with only Thome left on the bench.

B) That outfield would be the worst in the majors. At least with Casilla, we have some flexiblity as to wether the Twins slide Casilla into CF or Punto. At least Casilla and Punto have speed and range. Cuddy, Kubel, and Young, in those positions you put above, would amount to about 5 runs given up alone. Factor in the horrible infield defense with having Harris at SS etc…ugh!

C) Why are you so anti-Casilla? Casilla is out of options and still is a valuable player….thus, he makes the team or we package him in a deal.

by 33MorneauMVP on Mar 21, 2010 12:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm not Down on Casilla

The facts are that we have all Middle Infielder on this roster and No 3Bman. We let Tolleson go already. If we let Casilla go we still have Hughes,Plouffe,Tolbert, and DeLosSanto as Middle Infielders. Plus Punto already will get the playtime if a infielder needs time. Tolbert,Ramos,Valencia,Jones and Rever are all looking for a spot on the 25 man roster. You tell me why you what to stop one of these guys from going north with the Team.
