Will Kubes hit .300 again this year?
My guess is yes. Yes he will.

And really?
Gordo just said the ball was “fisted on the pitch”. Ahh.

LoMo!
Logan Morrison is one of the most interesting people to follow on twitter. Wish I could be listening.

listening to the game that is. And not just because of Morrison (lol).

He must be the one Gordo keeps calling "Morgenson".

Someone help me....
Where has Jose Morales been? I thought he did great last year. I could swear he would have been # 2 catcher this year. Whats the deal?

He had wrist surgery.
Still healing.

Do0 we know...
If he would be # 2 after he returns?

Oh, who's slow now?
:)

As do I. That's what I miss most about him.
And the part I miss least? Watching him try to throw someone out.
oh I do not miss the strike outs
He always went down swinging…
"I couldn't do that. Could you do that? Why can they do it? Who are those guys?"
Could he make the team?
I don’t know. Cuddy’s getting playing time In CF this spring ahead of him so I don’t think he can play CF anymore.
And there is a big logjam at CornerOF/1B/DH with Young/Cuddyer/Kubel/Morneau/Thome.
Its too bad he can’t play 3rd.
That would be funny...
We’d have to put a cutoff man between the mound and home plate.

Nick Punto
would be a damn good pitcher from 20 feet in front of the plate until he got killed by a line drive
pfft...
Punto would catch it with his teeth. A line shot taking out Punto… Good luck!
I'm gonna go ahead and refrain from the obvious joke here.

probably for the best...
This on the radio? I need some quality procrastination
Casilla or Jones??? I'd take Jones
If we lose Casilla, we have Tolbert, and more at AAA

I think the 3B job kinda dictates this actually.
If Punto is your ‘starter’, I think you take Casilla north.
If it’s Harris, then Casilla is unnecessary and you take Jones.
If Punto's the starter
We should have kept Valencia!
by b1 on Mar 24, 2010 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions
that makes no sense
If punto is the starter, then we should have Valencia north with the team? So Punto starts, and Valencia just sits on the bench when he could be playing everyday and improving at AAA. Ya, ok that makes sense.

Slowey
threw really quite well today.
5 IP, 3 H, 0 BB, 0 R, 5 K

really encouraging...
for this rotation. If he’s really healthy, this staff should eat up a LOT of innings. which should really help the pen.
eat a lot of innings
and hardly give up any runs if spring training is anything to go by! (which it isnt.)

Rauch
has a nice inning; struck out one hitter.

bomb….

Slowey's lookin' good...
…but so are all our starters. Wow. I can’t remember a spring training where we turned in so many great starts — though that’s just the impression I’ve gotten. Does anyone know where I can find this spring’s stats on this?

this spring's stats?
mlb.com has it…

Casilla moves to CF
and Matt Macri comes in to play SS. I thought Macri was a minor league free agent this past year.

This is one thing Casilla has on Jones perhaps
Emergency CF. Can fill in for a game or a game and a half if Span goes down. Long enough for someone to get here from Rochester.
Wouldn't that be a thing Jacque has on Casilla?
Unless he has really let himself go.
Sure Casilla is faster, but Jacque used to be a pretty good fielding center fielder. Casilla would have to be a lot faster to make up for the difference in proven ability.
Yeah
I’d rather have Jacque right now. But they don’t want to lose Casilla.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
But Casilla and Cuddyer played CF today... not Jacque
I thought it was quite telling that they are giving Cuddyer training time in CF this spring and not Jacque. Has Jacque played CF yet this spring?
I'm thinking...
that Jacque’s presence in ST is more of a favor to him and what he’s done for the organization in the past than anything. And he provides some temporary depth in the meantime at Rochester.
I’ll be ridiculously shocked if Casilla isn’t the 25th man on the roster. And he should be.
I mostly agree
But it’s hard to look at what Jones has done in ST compared to what Casilla has done and say with a straight face that people can “earn” their spots in ST. It’s really just a case where there is no place for Jones on the bench and where Casilla is winning his spot by virtue of his lack of options, but it’s still got to be disheartening for Jacques.
I agree
I don’t want the Twins to lose Casilla and Jacque’s best days are far behind him
But that doesn’t mean we should pretend that in some ways Jacque wouldn’t be better right now for the Twins than Casilla. Just like we know that we’d rather have Casilla at 2nd than Jacque there.
I just fail to see how Jacque has any value on this club...
especially if he can’t play a good CF anymore. When would you play him?
He shouldn’t EVER be playing over any of Kubel/Thome/Cuddyer/Span/Morneau, so where does that leave him?
Insurance for another Delmon start like last year
Which is best served in Rochester. If Delmon doesn’t bomb, Jacque has an extended audition and gets picked up by another team.

+1
Jacques needs more time to shake off the rust after the full year off.
Spring training is so short. I’m not sure the stats matter too much. I think its more important how the players look to the coaching staff if there is indeed a true positional battle going on. These spring stats are forgotten pretty quickly. It gets pretty hard to find them after a few years. I tried looking to see how Mauer/Morneau in their first springs but I can’t find the data.
I sure hope all the usual slow starters have at least decent Aprils. Young digs himself such a deep hole every year. Cuddyer is also notorious for being a slow starter (though for some reason he hits great in the past three spring trainings, so go figure).
I was thinking the same thing last night watching Cuddyer rake
“Save some of that for April Cuddy.”

I've been wondering this.
I noticed quite a few people that made their bullpen lists have him in there. That’s a little surprising.

Nobody else for the spot?
It seems the CW is that Neshek will need some time in Rochester to start the season, add in that it may be a bit risky to rely on the young arms right away… Granted Condrey probably shouldn’t be relied upon either.
Ah, that's right.
Dang.
RonGarde: Target Field is going to be exactly like Progressive Field, except you'll have a chance to die of frostbite in the middle of July
Condrey has an option
We can option him if he doesn’t improve
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
Got to think Condrey will get a chance
I know he isn’t making a ton of $$$, but, most of the guys who could potentially take his spot have 0 service time right now, so the Twins can take Condrey north and see if he works it out over April/May. If, say, around May 15 he is still not shown his form, the Twins can buy out what is left of his deal and pull up someone else.
Game over
Twins win 4-1. Woot.

I know it's been said a lot, but our starters are looking amazing so far.
Through 65 innings, here is the line for our collective starters.
65 IP
1.38 ERA
0.83 WHIP
7.6 K/9
55:12 K:BB ratio
5 HR allowed
I know it’s just Spring Training, of course, but these numbers are definitely encouraging for a staff that some say will be our weak point this year.
I have seen several articles recently talking about how #5 starters don't really exist
and most teams are lucky to even have 4 regular starters. The great majority of teams every year run through 6 or 7 or more starters each season.
That is why the Twins rotation is flying so far under the radar, IMO. Unless 2006 Liriano comes back, they don’t have a real dominant ace pitcher. They do have a multitude of quality, average to above average starters though. There are teams that would be better off with either Perkins or Duensing as their fourth starter and the Twins have one of them buried all the way down at #7.
This isn’t a particularly new revelation around here though. I just like repeating it. Unless very bad things happen the Twins should know going into every single game this season that their starter can give them a chance to win. With this offense that will be enough. And on the days when Baker and hopefully Slowey and Liriano are pitching, watch out.
I'm bullish on this rotation
It’s the best one I’ve seen since 91. Maybe better, considering that the 91 rotation had three above average guys and a a bunch of # 5s.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
I'm on the fence
Until I see Liriano with my own eyes. If Liriano is up to the task (playing at even a solid #3 starter level), I think this crew of pitchers carries us a long way towards the post-season. I’m less bullish on their playoff potential, but I’ll cross that bridge when we get there :)
Typically small sample sizes tell you more about pitchers
than position players. It’s still spring training, but it’s encouraging.
