Twins 2010 Payroll

The Twins 2010 Payroll stands at $95,325,000 as of today.  This amount includes 27 players...the 25 players that will break camp on Thursday, Joe Nathan who will be moved to the 60-day disabled list (will open a spot on the 40-man roster when needed) and Glen Perkins, who may or may not be on the final roster when breaking camp.

The total does not include the many award bonuses or bonuses for plate appearances for Brendan Harris (would be $75,000 at estimated 450 plate appearances) and Jim Thome ($450,000 at estimated 400 plate appearances).  The amount also does not include salary earned by the many minor league players who will receive the minimum while called up to the Twins.  Considering all the bonuses and compensation to minor leaguers, the Twins final payroll at the end of the year will likely be in the $96,000,000+ range (more if they go out and pick up an expensive closer).  This amount will be offset however, by the amount of any insurance they collect on Joe Nathan.

Did I miss something?

Is Ramos going to be on the big league team to start the season?

Yes...

…however, Butera and eventually Jose Morales will be paid the same amount.

Insurance

Yeah, because of Nathan’s insurance they’re probably sitting more at 90-92 or so. Keep in mind that was where they wanted to be at the start of the year, so we’re already pushing the boundaries here…

Nah

I say we should just score enough runs every game that we won’t need a closer

Looks like......

The Twins will be able to shed approx. $24 million of that at the end of 2010.

I would rephrase

I think they will have $24 million they can invest differently.
I assume you mean Pavano ($7m), Hudson (5), Punto (4), and Cuddyer (9).

To me, that sounds like $24 million they can reinvest, and will have to, at P, 2B, IF, and OF. We can hope that another OF is ready to take Cuddyer’s place, but it is somewhat hard to picture him leaving. Similarly with Punto, I see a good chance he gets re-signed, but we’ll see. It’s going to be hard for them to cut payroll to much, with raises going to everyone else on the team, so we will definitley need some prospects to come through, and be ready to perform on the cheap.

My hopes are for Valencia, a Casilla/Huges/someone as a utility infielder, and an outfielder, but I really don’t know who I expect to be ready. I kind of doubt Revere will be.

Cuddyer's option was picked up for next year. It's 10.5 million, I think.

Yep

His contract stated that the Twins had to make the decision on his option after last year, so he’s on the books for 2011 already.

Other guys who could come off the books (although I don’t see the first one as likely):

Kubel ($5.25 million option for 2011)
Rauch
Crain
Thome

Agreed on Cuddy

Mauer may be the face of the Twins but Cuddy had been the voice. His 2011 option is for $10.5M. It seems most talk has him gone but I have a hard time seeing it. Punto on the other hand…

Right now the commitment in 2011 is $79,750,000...

…and that is for 10 players (Baker, Blackburn, Nathan, Mauer, Morneau, Punto, Harris, Cuddyer, Kubel and Span). They can save $4,500,000 by not picking up Punto’s $5.0mm option which has a $500k buyout. That cuts it to $75.250mm for 9 players. Assume that they spend another $3.5mm for Liriano and Slowey plus the minimum for someone like Duensing, Manship or Swarzak as the 5th starter and they are close to $80mm. Add another $10-12mm for the bullpen and they are in the low $90’s.

Lets assume they resign Thome for another $1.5mm and replace Punto with Valencia ($430k) at minimum wage. Tolbert or Luke Hughes replaces Hudson and battles Casilla for the second base job (+$500k) and Hardy gets another raise of say, $2.0mm and they are around $96mm. Delmon Young gets a raise of another $750k or so and Ben Revere sees a lot of time with the Twins at minumum wage puts them a couple million under $100mm. Any free agent pick ups would be limited to someone like the Hudson pickup this year in which case they would break the $100mm level by a million or two.

So the final line is that they will have to be a bit creative next year and will be counting on the farm system for almost all of the new blood in 2011.

by roger13 on Mar 28, 2010 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd be ok with that.

I’d like to see what guys like Valencia, Hughes and Revere could do with a little playing time.

It’s a long ways away, and plenty of things can go wrong or awry between here and there, but right now I’m definitely not worried about 2011.

Pavano a big league pitcher?

After watching his pitiful performance in today’s game against the Red Sox, would anyone believe that Pavano can actually pitch at the big-league level? My Gawd. I saw more more meatballs from him in his 3 innings plus than I did in the entire year and a half I worked in an Italian restaurant during my college days. One would hope it was just an aberration, but that was awful!

Everyone has awful outings.

Pavano’s been fine this spring. This was cringe-worthy, but I don’t think it means anything overall.

On his blog, LEN III said that half of Nathan's contract is insured, this year only

That said, I miscalculated. It should read – $4.5 million.
