Cardinals 5, Twins 3

Daniel Descalso won this one in the ninth with a two-out, two-run walkoff homer off of Cole DeVries. Albert Pujols and Ryan Ludwick also homered for St. Louis.

For the Twins, Brendan Harris's two-run triple did the most damage. Brock Peterson, playing first base, also went 3-4, including an RBI double to briefly tie the game in the top of the ninth inning.

Kevin Slowey went five innings for the Twins, giving up three runs (courtesy of Ludwick and Pujols's dingers) on seven hits. He walked no one.

Delmon Young had two singles, but earns the Dud of the Day award for misplaying a ball into a double, another sign that Delmon Young's Comical Left Field Misadventures Tour will continue for another season.

Your stars: 3) Toby Gardenhire (pinch-hit double); 2) Harris; 1) Peterson.
Anti-stars: 3) DeVries; 2) Juan Portes (struck out twice); 1) Young

In Delmon's defense, the wind really played havoc on that ball.

Off the bat, Harris went out for it down the line. The ball just kept drifting towards center. At the last minute, a gust must have taken it 10 feet farther than Delmon thought it would. It ended up being closer to the center fielder than Delmon. But Span was nowhere to be seen because he probably judged it like Harris: A routine fly ball toward the left field line. I can’t recall a ball being more wind blown than that one, judging by the fielders’ reactions.

Delmon also made

a diving catch on a Pujols liner. Yah the pop-up made him look slow and stumbling.

I think most big leaguers would make that catch. He should have been aware of the wind- it had been blowing all game, it’s not like a sudden gust came out of nowhere. He’s a little skinnier but otherwise the same Delmon… can’t field, no discipline at the plate.

But the best part was...

Just in the prior half-inning, the annoucers were discussing the new ball park which of course led to musings about losing balls in the roof of the Dome. Buck Showalter put the mojo on Delmon…

I agree

I think Delmon Young is a decent fielder most of the time, just has some bad plays/breaks sometimes. He’s nowhere near what the Mets fielders were last year. This one was just a bad break, a lot of outfielders might have made the same mistake. And to put him as the number one anti-star for this is inane.

Slama

I see ahy he could walk some people, he throws corner to corner with late movement. I looked like if you just took, most of his pitches would break out of the strike zone. I did’nt see any funny motion or hidding the ball. His ball moves in and out.

He looked surprised by some of those calls

He kept sticking the sinker on the outside corner for a ball.

He struck out Pujols twice

Only to see him jog to first base with a walk. Think a rookie will ever get a borderline call against Albert in his own park in a spring training game?

Never.

Its not just rookies or ST or the park

When pitches on the black are called for strikes, Pujols makes faces and does that thing where he arches his back in distress. LaRussa will badger the umpires to the point where they’ll stop the game and jaw back and forth. Once the pitchers are forced to either walk him or go down the middle of the plate, he’ll send one out at which time, like yesterday, he’ll admire it and eventually get around the bases. Then he’ll be declared to be the greatest player is baseball with plenty of ooohs and aaaaahs.

I was surprised that there was no melodrama when KS made that pitch up and in to him. That’s a forbidden pitch.

I think any good ballplayer worth his salt

needs to face a little chin music from time to time.

Cole DeVries

is no longer in contention for the closer job.

BIG smile

That lollipop he threw to end the game just defined for all time the term “hanging curveball.”

Where did he play last season?

I thought I followed the Twins minor system decently close but I have never heard of him.
I suppose with that slow pitch softball style ball he threw at the end it could be a while before I see him in the bullpen anyway.
