Somewhat weak bench.

Would have loved to see some Wilson Ramos this spring. Would have been a very nice right-handed bat on the bench. I guess our right-handed pinch hitter is Harris?

Other than that, this team looks stacked. Very excited about the potential here.

by Twins4Life on Mar 31, 2010 10:26 AM EDT reply actions

I still think it's a better bench than we've had in years past,

at least offensively. Thome alone adds a lot of value in that sense.

by Jesse on Mar 31, 2010 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Pinch hitting

Harris from the right and Thome from the left? Really not bad.

by Neil on Mar 31, 2010 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions

True true.

It’s much better than what we have had with the addition of ol’ Jimmer. But I had my hopes up for Ramos.

by Twins4Life on Mar 31, 2010 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Seriously.

Remember when the bench was like Lew Ford and Jason Tyner? This is exponentially better.

by matty_b on Mar 31, 2010 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Not only that...

I remember when Jason Tyner was the DH and the sixth infielder was Luis Rodriguez, who was basically a slow Alexi Casilla.

Shudder

That was the worst bench in the league, bar none.

I see Harris getting more starts at third as the season goes on

At least until they deem Valencia is ready. Then it’s time to make a move with Punto and Casilla. All things in good time.

Even though Ramos is better

It’s the smarter move to bring Butera. Ramos is too valuable and needs to play every day.

by John Veldhuis on Mar 31, 2010 10:27 AM EDT reply actions

I agree.

I do think Gardy would have found a way to give Ramos more playing time, whether that meant Joe shiting to DH one more time a week or whether that meant Mauer being removed late in any blowout game, but ultimately it’s more important for Ramos to get a chance to see full-blown competition at AAA first. There’s no rush on him at this point, and his impact on this roster would have been minimal right now.

by Jesse on Mar 31, 2010 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

Gardy said he’d get Ramos a lot of playing time. Well, that’s at the expense of The MVP, The Beast, The Shrimper or The Natural. Not sure if he’s a better hitter than any of these. Maybe The Shrimper.

Hardy's nickname

Do chicks dig him? If so, we could call him “Bad Boy Hot”, after the spiciest sauce at John Hardy’s Barbecue in Rochester. I admit that is going to mildly awkward lengths to connect his name with a Minnesotan reference, and it sounds a bit… odd coming from a straight male, but that maybe makes it funnier.

If it’s not an acceptable nickname, I think it would work smashingly as an exclamation when he is on a hitting streak.

Ramos as pinch-hitter

How often is Gardy going to use his backup C as a pinch hitter? You all know he would never do that, so if we had Ramos’ bat on the bench, we would have….Ramos’ bat on the bench.

Well...

He did that a few times last year when it was Mauer on the bench (I even recall them sacrificing the DH so Mauer could come in as a defensive replacement), so he’s not completely averse to the idea.

TBH

I’m rooting for Delmon more than anyone else. Please please please be kind of good Delmon, please.

I'm rooting for Delmon too.

I picked him up with my last pick in my fantasy league so it would be really convenient for him to have a nice breakout year ;)

I always loved Neshek coming into a game

It seems like certain batters just want nothing to do with him. I hope we see a lot of that this year.

Punto over Harris to start

I haven’t really had a chance to watch many games so far, but I seem to remember Harris doing a much better job on the field and at the dish. Is this further proof that Punto has compromising pictures of Gardy?

by Ranger_Bob on Mar 31, 2010 10:43 AM EDT reply actions

Are the positions set?

Or did we just get the names of the 25 man, and assume they’re in these slots? Because if we just have the names, Harris could still be the opening day 3B.

platoon with more Punto

I just assume we’ll see plenty of Punto at least early on.

After all, it’s an even year but he’s also been handed the job for the most part. So it’s one astrological sign of something good and one of something bad.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

In this situation, the Twins just have too many guys to choose from.

When Glen Perkins gets sent down, you know there were too many bodies for the number of spots available. Slama will see time this season eventually, or he’s just going to waste in AAA.

by Jesse on Mar 31, 2010 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Mijares

Note that Mijares is also experiencing some problems right now. One would assume that, if he can’t go, Mahay (or Perkins or Slama, if Condrey is out) might get a shot early on.

by Jon Marthaler on Mar 31, 2010 11:10 AM EDT reply actions

La Velle or Joe C (or both) commented on his eye problems,

and said that right now he’s fine. He’ll have to “deal with it down the line”, but apparently Mijares is going to pitch today and doesn’t think it’s serious?

by Jesse on Mar 31, 2010 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Mijares

Hasn’t been blowing them away in Spring Training. Wonder if it’s just him getting tuned up, or if the eyesight is partially to blame? We’ll find out more today.

I would be more content with that scenario.

by John Veldhuis on Mar 31, 2010 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions

I have to believe the Twins are hard-pressed to keep finding reasons to keep Slama off the team.

Let this dude have his chance! I hope we see some significant time from him this year.

by Twins4Life on Mar 31, 2010 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Experience,

maybe also the fact that Mahay is a southpaw…even though Condrey himself is a righty.

by Jesse on Mar 31, 2010 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Question

Isn’t the 40-man roster full right now? Mahay got a minor league deal and isn’t on it, so someone would have to be ditched to make room for him.

If Condrey needs to go on the 15-day DL

Mahay gets his spot on the team, and Nathan’s spot on the 40-man.

Third Base Possibility?

As much as I’m looking forward to Punto/Harris platooning at 3rd, has anyone thought about picking up Hank Blalock? The Rays aren’t putting him on the 25 man roster, so he’s looking for employment. His .269/.329/.465 career line is a big upgrade at 3rd, and fills the one big gap in a really solid lineup. Even in an injury plagued season last year Blalock slugged .459 with 25 hrs. Now that he’s floating around without a job, the Twins could pick him up for a song. Gardy could even platoon Punto and Blalock if the latter’s injury history was a concern.

by Cedoleban on Mar 31, 2010 11:31 AM EDT reply actions

The issue there is the same issue that Crede had, which is staying healthy.

The Twins bench is already strapped—they can’t afford to hide the walking wounded like they did with Crede last season. And if the Twins won’t keep a guy like Crede, who has GG defense, then there’s really no reason to think they’d go after Blalock either.

by Jesse on Mar 31, 2010 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think they are willing to spend anymore money. If they were, they would have found someone to replace Nathan by now I would think.

by TrevorR on Mar 31, 2010 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't think money is the issue for the closer thing.

I think it was the number/quality of prospects other teams were asking for. The Padres wanted 2 of our top 5 prospects for Heath Bell.

by Twins4Life on Mar 31, 2010 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Right

I still think they’re working on a deal for Frasor. They’re just not going to give up the farm for a one-year closer fix.

Nathan is not done

I’ve posted this before: Eck, Hoffman and Rivera have a combined 630 saves from age 36 on. Whether Nathan gets his saves with the Twins or some other organization is the question.

Rivera had TJ the year before his rookie year

Eck had multiple surgeries before becoming a reliever.

The way I understand it

Is they were going to perform TJ surgery on Rivera, but when they opened up his elbow, they discovered he didn’t need it.

Eck had surgeries, but never TJ.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO

A .269/.329/.465 line would indeed be an upgrade, if Blalock actually had that ability – his offensive success was almost entirely a product of The Ballpark at Arlington. His career road line is .245/.300/.414, which is basically a less-powerful Joe Crede, only Crede is one of the best third basemen in the league while Blalock is a notorious defensive butcher.

Even if Blalock is healthy, I don’t believe he’s an upgrade over the incumbents – Punto provides better on-base skills (yes, at the expense of power, but I believe on-base is more important given the collection of boppers already in the lineup) and far superior defense, and Harris is marginally superior both offensively (again, because of on-base skills, although his career slugging isn’t that far behind Blalock’s road split) and defensively.

I can live.......

with Butera eating time on the bench. But I do wonder if Morales is needed when he comes back. Of course, we can argue that Ramos needs AAA experience thing. Nonetheless, the Twins have a catching situation that many teams would love to have.

I’m glad Neshek comes north! Condrey and Duensing are on the wall with perkins, Mahay and Slama breathing down their necks.

Remember 2009

The Twins used something like 20 pitchers. Those that didn’t make the opening day roster almost certainly will get their shot sometime this year. Remember that Mijares didn’t make the trip north and Luis Ayala did. The Twins also had Craig Breslow on the team—how many remember that?

And Breslow is the guy they should’ve kept.

I know people are pumped about Ramos, but Butera should be just fine. At this point I’d definitely rather have him than Redmond.

As much as I like Ramos, I have to pull for Butera. He’s worked hard for this. He’s a good guy. And if not now, when?

Did Redmond win a spot in Cleveland?

I never know who’s playing for who until their numbers show up at bb-ref.

by DavidRF on Mar 31, 2010 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

No surprises

This is exactly what I’ve expected from the start, which is good, because they didn’t make any hasty spring decisions. Bringing Ramos with would be a pointless and wasteful gesture. I never understood all the people who thought Neshek might have to start in the minors, he’s already been rehabbing for a very very long time.

Let’s do this! This is a very good roster, even without Nathan! If the Twins get any kind of decent starting pitching, the AL Central is toast…

I think Twins Nation are underestimating the loss of Nathan. It’s a huge deal and gonna be a source of drama (and extra losses) all season long. :(

by ajmargarine on Mar 31, 2010 12:41 PM EDT reply actions

I think think its been underestimated

There’s just nothing anyone can do about it. He’s done for the year.

I don’t think his loss alone will cost us more than three wins this year (that would be a lot for a 70 IP guy). That said, it has there will be a major perception issue if middle relief starts to struggle. Every blown lead has the potential to lead to teeth-gnashing. We blow leads every year (often before Nathan starts warming up) but I think there’s a possibility that this year the blown leads will require more explanation.
