Waiting on the Mauer Extension

Nothing's happened, so we'll keep it short.  On Friday, KFAN's Common Man reported the following:

"The deal will be signed by Sunday...It will end up being $165 - $175 million for eight years.  It will also include the ninth and tenth year as options... the length was the holdup, and it has been solved."

Our own lovable beat writers, Joe C. and LEN III, haven't said a peep and even MLB Trade Rumors was told to ignore the radio report.  Why?  Because no sources with the Twins had heard anything about it.  Stay tuned.

UGH.

Got my hopes way up for today, but it’s not looking good. Sad day.

The Yankees can't have Joe Mauer because #7 is retired, thus what number would Joe have? #99!? - Dealbreaker

Every time I hear this song now...

…I think about hearing it at the Metrodome numerous times in the final week last season. -And I’ll think about singing it, full throat, in the 11th inning of Game 163. I will also forever boo “South Detroit.”

I'm still numb from the Favre thing last summer

I’ve decided I’m a baseball fan and not a contract fan, so I’m tuning the whole thing out until the team issues a press release (or the season starts)

Come on!

I’ve been waiting all day. Get it done!

by Boss10 on Mar 7, 2010 9:46 PM EST reply actions

This is why I heard about it and chose not to post it Friday.

I’m not pretending to be much of a journalist, but I’m also not willing to run with wildly-sourced reports like this one.

THis

I try to be really skeptical of reports that are unsubstantiated, like this one, especially when they come from people like common, but I got wrapped up in this one. Maybe because I got the info secondhand reported with high excitement…

It’s a good reminder to remain skeptical…

If he's not signed by tomorrow

I’ll just wait longer.

Good philosophy.

"signed by Sunday"

It could be signed, but not yet announced. Not saying the report’s right, but maybe it’s not proven wrong yet either.

This is what I was hoping, too.

Grasping at straws :)

I think this makes sense.

They signed everyone else today it seems like. I am hoping they signed Mauer too. They just want to wait until tomorrow to make the big announcement.

Yeah… That’s gotta be it… right?

by Twins4Life on Mar 7, 2010 11:43 PM EST up reply actions

Hmmm

On one hand, this signing is major enough that they’d hold a press conference, which certainly wouldn’t happen over the weekend. The announcement of the Blackburn signing over the weekend doesn’t really change that – they can leak his signing, since it’s not like they’re going to hold a press conference for him.

On the other hand, I have a hard time believing that they’d wait very long to hold the press conference if they had the contract signed and in hand (you can keep the good press in the news all week), and you’d think something about that would’ve leaked by now.

he could still sign by Sunday

next Sunday or a Sunday next month, year…

by caluofmn on Mar 8, 2010 10:41 AM EST up reply actions

Next Sunday?

I don’t remember them specifying that it was this Sunday… maybe next Sunday?

If it’s next Sunday it’s going to be the perfect hangover remedy after a week of Spring Break in Key West.

I wonder if Common will mention this on air today.

Or if he will just ignore it and pretend he never said anything.

difficult

I think it will be difficult to sign Mauer. He is a real ballplayer — a hall of famer — and we are looking to lock him up here for 8-10 years. So, it will cost a tremendous amount of money to do this. My hunch is that the Twins are looking ok, but that we are going to have a very hard time finishing this job. In New York, Mauer would get $25MM. He’s the reigning MVP, batting title and etc. He’s a great clubhouse guy, community guy, all-around terrific player and the Twins should do everything they can to pay the man.

But, he is valuable. The Yankees are dying to sign him. So are the Sox. If we don’t have him committed to us by month-end, we’re in trouble.
