Closer Watch: Jon Rauch vs Joe Nathan

I'm not trying to make any point here, other than to compare Jon Rauch with Joe Nathan (in 2009) through their first five appearances.  It's more of a testament to how well Rauch has done to this point than anything else.

Pitcher IP H HR R ERA S/Opp BF Ptch Avg Obp Slg
Nathan 5.0 2 1 1 1.80 3/3 18 71 .118 .167 .294
Rauch 5.0 5 0 1 1.80 5/5 19 72 .263 .263 .316

Hits, walk, strikeouts

Yeah, Rauch has been good so far, but he’s clearly not dominating like Nathan.

On the other hand, there’s a lot of luck in closing out games (ie Rauch gave up a run once, but it was in a game when he had room, do you give up your 1 run when you have a 3 run lead, or a 1 run lead? There’s a lot of luck in things like that) so you just have to take it and run with it. Things dont “even out” statistically in the end, he’s just ahead of pace at this point, so yay.

Otherwise known as the Todd Jones principle.

I was trying to be subtle about it.

Now you’ve ruined it, and if he’s reading this he’s crying. You’ve made Ron Davis cry.

Eh

He’s doing fine, but they’re not actually that comparable. Rauch has given up 2.5 times more hits. (And don’t say it’s just 5 to 2 so the sample size makes it virtually meaningless — that’s true of the entire comparison.)

Jesse

You shoulda’ just cherry picked out the similar numbers so we couldn’t bash your lighthearted little post like an angry mob of cynics.

OOPS

Good point, Adam. Let’s try that again:

5 innings, 1.8 ERA, meet 5 innings, 1.8 ERA. Not bad!

On second thought, I’ll take that any time!

Completely off topic

But WOW, does the Royals bullpen just suck. Bannister had a fairly solid game, bullpen just blew a 5 run lead. Royals now losing to Detroit 6-5. In one inning. Awful.

Bingo bango.

exactly

Two out of their last three games the Tigers crawl back from a 5 run deficit. I can’t wait til we get them head to head. See how that works out for them against OUR pen.

Notice that it was Juan Cruz who started the disaster?

According to Fangraphs he decreased the Royals chances of winning by 48%.

Remember when he was the guy a lot of Twins fans wanted for the bullpen last before 2009? I remember he sounded pretty good to me.

Me too.

Glad I wasn’t in charge of that decision.

I feel like a Twinkie Town failure for asking,

But is Rauch just called Shank because of the tats?

by Yabbs on Apr 13, 2010 3:54 PM EDT reply actions

A shank is a prison made knife

Often from utensils and other common objects. Rausch has a neck tattoo. Based on the core belief that men in prison are hardcore and have neck tattoos, Rausch=The Schank.
You dig?

I always loved that one.

Oh yes, I know what a shank is.

And he’ll use one to kill you. He’ll kill all of us.

He does look like someone who would bring death

The Reaper would be a good nickname, too.

Do they have a cheesy Jumbotron intro for Rauch like they did for Nathan? They should feature him in a black robe carrying a scythe.

Well the tatoo is a representation of his marriage bond with his wife

He’s too classy for me to think that is about conjugal love. So I won’t even suggest it.

Early Troy Percival looked intimidating enough to kill you

But 2008-2009 Troy Percival would kill you by giving you a heart attack. He always looked like he was about to blow the save, and a lot of the time he did.

no ....

when he plays golf, he hits a lot of those shots that start out 45 degrees off line …..

Rauch has been great so far

He also leads all MLB in saves at the moment (next closest pitchers have 3).

But I think we’re getting spoiled by Jon Rauch. He’s a good pitcher, but his ERA with the Twins has been a lot lower than his career ERA so far. When things finally catch up to him, we have to remember that.

One thing I cant shake

Is the ongoing thought that the sound of velociraptors is what Jon Rausch is ALWAYS thinking. Always. Just this constant high pitched-war screech. Its unnerving, but more soothing in save situations than one might imagine.

I always loved that one.

Ha. Awesome.

And now it’s happening to me. Worst earworm ever!
