OVT Twins vs Tigers

Game 163, Orlando Cabrera just hit a 2 run blast to give the Twins a 4 to 3 lead going into the 8th. Rick Porcello has pitched extremly well for the Detroit Tigers, and has become Ron Darlings new favorite player.

Wrong Game sorry. Twins are clinging onto a 6-5 lead right now heading into the top of the 6th.

Jimmers mashed a big two run tater

Hughes with a slightly less as big tater

Kubel with a RBI single

Same With Span

Same with O-dawg as well.

LETS GO TWINS!

A CATCH is the act of a fielder in getting secure possession in his hand or glove of
a ball in flight and firmly holding it; providing he does not use his cap, protector, pocket or
any other part of his uniform in getting possession. It is not a catch, however, if
simultaneously or immediately following his contact with the ball, he collides with a player,
or with a wall, or if he falls down, and as a result of such collision or falling, drops the ball.
It is not a catch if a fielder touches a fly ball which then hits a member of the offensive team
or an umpire and then is caught by another defensive player. If the fielder has made the
catch and drops the ball while in the act of making a throw following the catch, the ball shall
be adjudged to have been caught. In establishing the validity of the catch, the fielder shall
hold the ball long enough to prove that he has complete control of the ball and that his
release of the ball is voluntary and intentional.

The issue is bad pitching

But the bad pitching kind of throws the spastic bullpen management into sharp relief sometimes. Over the course of 162 games it works better than not. But when it fails it’s apalling.

by sw mn guy on Apr 28, 2010 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions

it's not stratomatic

whenever the bullpen door opens, the opportunity exists for the incoming reliver to be off that day, or not have “it” Burnett was doing fine, but we decide we need to use 3 relievers to get 2 outs and you see what happens when one of the guys didn’t have his good stuff, we’re down 5

You know what? I'm good with instant replay now.

I used to be a holdout. I thought that you can’t take the human element out of baseball. People make mistakes. But right now, I don’t care. I know that these calls go both ways. We’ve certainly benefited from them. But when an ump gets to keep his job even- though he clearly wasn’t trying to get himself in good position, and then gets to decide whether or not a potentially game changing play was actually an out, which could be determined by personal feelings towards the player in question, its time for a change.

He had perfect position.

I don’t see any possible way that he could have missed that call, when it was fair two different times and he was standing 10 feet away looking right at it. If that isn’t staged then I don’t know what is.

I think umps just need to be punished more than they are.

I’m not really for or against instant replay being used on plays like this. This was a pretty obvious call from the start, he would’ve had time to signal out before Span bobbled it. I think this just shows the umpire’s grudge against Span because Span walked away from him in an intimidating manner last night. That’s just unacceptable, I’d like to see a suspension for Paul Emmel after his performance the last two nights.

I love the Twins

and I’d never give up on ’em. But I have given up on this officiating crew.

Sucks that Mahay gets the loss instead of Crain. Gardy.

ok.ok

by ajmargarine on Apr 28, 2010 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Who started that lefty/righty overmanaging stuff anyway?

Anyone? I remember my dad screaming at Sparky Anderson in the Big Red Machine days for doing the “5 pitchers to get 6 outs” stuff. Sparky didn’t start that, did he?

by sw mn guy on Apr 28, 2010 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not all Gardy's fault.

Generally, he uses his bullpen well, much better than other managers in the league. Tonight, he did what he thought was right based on his options. The umpire did what he knew was wrong based on another guy pissing him off previously, and he wants to see make his hometown team win.

by kcoryell on Apr 28, 2010 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions

lost in all this is that he sent baker out for the 5th and pulled him after one pitch. gardy does NOT use his bullpen well and I keep pointing that out and people here keep groaning at his decisions, but then they say he uses his bullpen well!

by ajmargarine on Apr 28, 2010 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

He made some mistakes, but all of the bullpen moves were justifiable from a non statistical point of view

He played with fire by letting Baker go back out, but think about if he has a 1-2-3 inning. Praise. Then he acted quickly and brought in Burnett, which turned out to be a good decision. Then, he pulled Burnett for Mahay to get a lefty-lefty matchup, which didn’t make sense at all based on the platoon splits. At that point, who would you rather have brought in in place of Neshek? Crain was a terrible choice to put in, obviously, but he never would have even had an opportunity had the umpire made the right call. Inning would have most likely been over, Neshek, Guerrier, Rauch shutdown, game over. Gardy definitely made mistakes in this one, but that isn’t what cost them the game. The only one I have a real problem with is pulling Burnett for Mahay, which led to all the other moves.

we're only down 5 because of him.

Who knows?

Maybe Jesse’ll get his ERA under 7 if he goes long enough.

by sw mn guy on Apr 28, 2010 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Typical Crain

That’s why his ERA is respectable every year. He has great stuff. Just not in close games.

by bbeeck on Apr 28, 2010 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

This is from hittingthefoulpole.com

Jesse Crain

One of my least favorite pitchers over the years, Crain is kind of an annoying relief pitcher. He looks good when he comes in with the bases empty, but can’t seem to take care of business if there are runners on. That isn’t exactly a great quality in a middle reliever/setup man. Crain’s K/9 is in line with his career average so far, his BABIP sits at .323, so I expect that to come down. His GB% (29.2%) is quite a bit below his career average (46.5%). I don’t see him going anywhere, and I expect him to be an average pitcher most of the year. He will look pretty good when nobody is on base, and he will struggle if he is asked to get out of other people’s jams.

by kcoryell on Apr 28, 2010 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not even sure sending him to the minors would help that much.

His mechanics are fine, he just has an acute ability to throw it right down the middle every pitch when men are on base in a close game. It isn’t like he’s walking guys at an extreme rate leading to his ineffectiveness, it isn’t like he has a lack of good pitches either. You either try to use him sparingly in blowouts or you trade him for whatever PTBNL you can get for him.

Now they show Span dropping the ball in the exchange and Gardy getting tossed in the BG Leighton video?

makes it even crappier

I've seen them at O'Gara's a couple times.

They are a good time at Grand Old Days outside the Wild Onion, too. Of course, that might have something to do with the copious amount of alcohol consumed on that first Sunday in June :-D

I’d have a few choice words for him

Good lord, there's a Twins fan out there who thinks the Tigers have a better offense than we do.

Then proceeded to point out our 10 point difference in batting average….

unless you were serious, then…another Twins fan stated on another website that the Tigers have a better offense than the Twins and listed our team batting averages to prove it.
