Minor League Report...May 15, 2010
Coming off his no-hitter, Daniel Osterbrock collected 56% of the votes to become the first Player of the Week selected by the readers of Twinkie Town.
It appears the organization is developing a bad trend of playing about .500 ball one week followed by a really ugly week. That was the case this week as they won only nine games with seventeen losses. New Britain certainly isn't helping as they were winless in six games with only Beloit having a winning record at 4-3.
There were many moves as the Twins attempt to fix some of these problems. They placed J.J. Hardy on the DL, recalling Matt Tolbert to take his spot. They recalled Jose Mijares from his brief rehab assignment to Rochester. With Joe Mauer recovered from his heel injury, Wilson Ramos was returned to Rochester. They also activated Jose Morales from EST and optioned him to Rochester. Pitchers Deolis Guerra and Cole DeVries were promoted from AA to Rochester after the Red Wings placed Charlie Zink on the DL and Yoslan Herrera was granted his release. Jair Fernandez was returned to Ft. Myers by the Red Wings with Alan de San Miguel assigned to New Britain allowing the Rock Cats to return Danny Rams to Beloit. Pitchers Matt Williams, Michael Allen and Kyle Gibson were promoted to New Britain as was utility player Yangervis Solarte. Steve Hirschfield was returned to the Rock Cat disabled list. The Rock Cats also suspended Henry Arias for disciplinary reasons.
Loek Van Mil was activated from the DL and assigned to Ft. Myers. Liam Hendriks and Steven Blevins were promoted to Ft. Myers. Jonathan Goncalves was returned to EST by the Miracle with Andrei Lobanov joining the Miracle from EST. The Beloit Snappers placed Tom Stuifbergen on their DL with Michael Tonkin and B.J. Hermsen being called up from EST. If I got them all, that is twenty-six moves which is more than I recall in any week since I began this weekly report several years ago.
Rochester Red Wings (AAA) (2-5, 14-21, 5th place, -7.0 games behind Syracuse)
Red Wing Manager Tom Nieto told Jim Mandelaro this week that "Its early, but its not going to be early forever." Seven games out certainly doesn't mean their season is over, but the Red Wings need to start making a move soon if they are to make a run at the playoffs.
The Wings are in a stretch where they are facing some big names with a date next Tuesday against Stephen Strasburg. Ryan Mullins missed a quality start by one out when he squared off with Ardolis Chapman last Sunday. Mullins pitched 5.2 innings with 7 hits, 3 runs and 6K/3BB as the Wings lost 5-2 as Jose Mijares allowed 2 hits and runs in 0.2 innings. Mullins had a re-match with Louisville and Chapman last night. This time the Wings prevailed as Chapman had his shortest start of the season, lasting only 3.1 innings with 9 hits and 8 runs. Mullins was again good as he pitched 6.2 innings with 9 hits, 4 runs (3 earned) and 4K/3BB to improve his record to 3-2. Deolis Guerra made his first AAA start against Indianapolis on Thursday, pitching 4.0 innings with 8 hits, 3 runs (2 earned) and 3K/1BB as the Wings lost,8-3. The Wings first win this week was Tuesday, 7-5 in ten innings, when Jeff Manship pitched 5.2 innings with 7 hits, 3 runs and 5K/3BB. Rob Delaney picked up his fifth win in six decisions, pitching 1.0 shutout inning with 1 hit and 1K/1BB.
Mullins leads the staff with 42.0 innings with a 4.50 ERA and 29K/11BB. As a starter, he has an excellent 3.31 ERA in 35.1 innings. Glen Perkins had one of his better starts on Monday when he didn't allow a run in his first four innings. Unfortunately, Perkins got only one out in the sixth inning before departing with seven runs on the board for Indianapolis. Perkins has a 0-4 record, 10.72 ERA and 20K/11BB in six starts (22.2 innings). Kyle Waldrop made three appearances this week, allowing one run in 6.2 innings with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks as he maintained his excellent 1.73 ERA. Rob Delaney made four appearances, pitching 3.1 innings with two runs and 4K/1BB raising his ERA to 3.86.
Slama watch.....Slama made three appearances this week, picking up his seventh save. Slama pitched 3.0 innings with two hits, one run, two strikeouts and no walks. For the season, Slama has a 0-0 record, 7 saves and a 2.01 ERA in 18 appearances (22.1 innings) with 26 strikeouts and 9 walks (3.62 walks/9 innings).
Jose Morales had a big night in his first game of his season last night, going 5-5 with two runs scored, a double and RBI. Jason Repko also had a big night, 4-4 with a run scored, double, 4 RBI and 2 walks, raising his average to .320/.417/.474. The Red Wings' leading hitter for much of the season has been Dustin Martin, who had four multi-hit games this week. Martin, who was 10-29, is now hitting .330/.398/.557 while leading the team with 5 home runs and 30 RBI. Trevor Plouffe is also having an excellent spring, hitting .293/.358/.466.
The Wings top player this week was Danny Valencia who is currently in a 18-game hitting streak. Valencia was 9-23 (.391 Average) with 4 runs scored, 3 doubles and 5 RBI. After a very slow start, Valencia finished April hitting .256 in 78 at bats. May has been another story as Valencia is hitting .364/.391/.455 in 44 at bats. Although he has yet to hit his first home run, his average is up to .295 with a team high 11 doubles. Valencia has struck out 21 times in 122 at bats while picking up 7 walks.
New Britain Rock Cats (AA) (0-6, 6-27, 6th place, -16.0 games behind New Hampshire)
Former GM Terry Ryan spent much of his week in New Britain. I expect Mr. Ryan isn't happy with what he saw as the Rock Cats were winless and continue to have the worst record in professional baseball. The Cats are averaging two runs per game, have struck out 223 times in 936 at bats and are 1-16 at home where they have 20 errors led by Estarlin De Los Santos, who has eight of his nine errors at home. Although Mr. Ryan went on in some detail, he summed up the Rock Cats problem as a "lack of execution."
Deolis Guerra was excellent in his last start for the Cats last Saturday when they lost to Portland, 4-3. Guerra pitched 6.1 innings with 6 hits, 1 unearned run and 4K/2BB. Matt Williams picked up the loss in his first appearance in AA, pitching 1.1 innings with 2 hits and 3 runs (2 earned). Michael McCardell allowed only 1 run in Sunday's 2-1 loss to Portland, pitching 6.0 innings with 4 hits, 1 run and 4K/3BB. David Bromberg had been excellent this spring, however, that wasn't the case on Monday when he allowed 11 hits and 8 runs in 4.2 innings. Tyler Robertson was also very good in Thursday's 3-1 loss at Harrisburg. Robertson pitched 5.2 innings with 7 hits, 2 runs and 5K/2BB to pick up his third loss in three decisions.
The starting staff has been solid this spring, McCardell (4.70 ERA), Gutierrez (4.38 ERA), Robertson (3.86 ERA) and Bromberg (3.58 ERA). Spencer Steedley has been the lone reliever who has been getting it done as he has a 2.55 ERA in 17. 2 innings. Others working out of the bullpen are: Joe Testa (7.20 ERA), Chris Province (7.32 ERA), Santos Arias (5.00 ERA) and Henry Arias (11.42 ERA).
There isn't a lot that can be said for the hitters as the Rock Cats scored three runs twice this week while scoring a total of five runs in their other four games. Only two players, Ben Revere and Steve Singleton, had two multi-hit games. Revere continued to be their top hitter at .292/.369/.319 (Yancarlos Ortiz is hitting .300 Average in only 40 at bats) with 11 stolen bases in 15 attempts. The only other players hitting over .240 Average are Mark Dolenc (.288/.329/.370), Rene Tosoni (.280/.338/.432) and Alexander Soto (.277/.320/.340 in only 47 at bats). Tosoni returned to the outfield in several games this week after being limited to designated hitter for several weeks. Joe Benson is hitting .258/.343/.516 in his last ten games (31 at bats) with 2 home runs.
Carlos Gutierrez was the Cats top player this week as he made his best start of the season in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to Trenton. Gutierrez pitched 7.0 innings with 6 hits, 2 runs (1 earned) and 4K/0BB.
Ft. Myers Miracle (Hi-A) (3-3, 15-19, 5th place, -5.0 games behind Bradenton)
The Miracle began a four game series with the Tampa Yankees on Monday, winning the first three 4-1, 6-2 and 2-1. Kyle Gibson pitched 6.2 strong innings against the Yankees in his last start for the Miracle. Gibson allowed 5 hits and 1 run in 6.2 innings with 8K/3BB. Michael Tarsi also had a quality start on Tuesday, pitching 6.0 innings with 5 hits, 2 runs and 5K/3BB. Liam Hendriks was excellent in his first start for the Mircale on Wednesday, pitching 7.0 innings with only 3 hits, 1 run and 8K/0BB to pick up his first win. Daniel Osterbrock struggled in the final game against the Yankees, allowing 11 hits and 6 runs (5 earned) in 5.1 innings in Thursday's 6-2 loss.
Gibson moved up to AA after compiling a 4-1 record for the Miracle in 7 starts (43.1 innings) with a 1.87 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 1 complete game one-hitter and 40K/12BB. Shooter Hunt made only one appearance this week, pitching 2.1 innings with no hits or runs, six strikeouts and only one walk as he lowered his ERA to 4.34. Hunt has allowed four runs in his last ten appearances (18.2 innings) with 29 strikeouts and only 6 walks for a 1.93 ERA. Matt Williams had a 2.30 ERA in 15.2 innings and Michael Allen had a 6.43 ERA in 14.0 innings before they were promoted to New Britain. Billy Bullock leads the Miracle with 7 saves with a 3.13 ERA in 13 appearances (17.1 innings) with 20K/8BB. Andrei Lobanov struck out two in his first appearance when he pitched 1.2 innings. Loek Van Mil pitched 2.0 no-hit innings with 4 strikeouts in his first game on Tuesday, however, allowed the winning run in last night's 1-0 loss at Bradenton.
Although he was only 1-12, the big news is that Paul Kelly was back at shortstop in four of the Miracle's last five games. The light hitting Miracle had only two players with two multi-hit games this week, Brandon Roberts and Andrew Thompson. Yangervis Solarte was the Miracle's leading hitter before his promotion, hitting .330/.408/.462 in 91 at bats. Catcher Daniel Rohlfing is hitting for a .302 Average in 43 at bats. Jonathan Goncalves hit .290/.303/.355 in 31 at bats during his brief assignment to the Miracle. Drew Thompson is hitting .267/.328/.371 in 105 at bats as the 23 year old works his way back onto the Twins radar.
The Miracle's top player this week was starter Bruce Pugh. Pugh began his week with a tough loss against St. Lucie, 3-2. Pugh pitched 5.0 innings with only three hits, two runs, 9 strikeouts and 3 walks. Pugh had the week's best starting performance last night when the Miracle again lost, 1-0 at Bradenton. Pugh pitched 7.0 shutout innings with only 1 hit, 10 strikeouts and 1 walk. Pugh walked the lead off hitter before retiring the next 12 batters as Bradenton got their only hit off him with two outs in the sixth inning.
Beloit Snappers (A) (4-3, 21-14, Tied/first place with Quad Cities, +0.5 games ahead of Peoria)
The Snappers moved into a first place tie following a sweep of Wisconsin in last night's double header, 2-1 and 5-3. Brad Stillings pitched 6.0 innings with 7 hits, 1 run and 5K/2BB in Saturday's 5-1 win in his best start of the season. He followed that performance with another solid start last night when he pitched 5.0 innings with 9 hits, 3 runs (2 earned) and 2K/2BB in a 5-3 win at Wisconsin. With three holes in their starting rotation, Peter Kennelly made his first start of the season on Sunday, pitching 4.0 innings with 6 hits, 3 runs and 2K/1BB. Edgar Ibarra pitched 4.0 innings with 2 hits and 3 runs in Monday's 8-7, ten inning win versus Kane County. Michael Tonkin was solid in his first start of the season in Tuesday's 5-1 loss. Tonkin pitched 4.0 innings with 6 hits, 3 runs and 4K/0BB. B.J. Hermsen was excellent in his first start last night, beating Wisconsin 2-1 with 5.0 innings, 4 hits, 1 run and 2K/2BB.
Steven Blevins had a 3.86 ERA and 6 saves before moving up to Ft. Myers. Jhon Garcia hasn't allowed a run in his first three appearances (6.0 innings). Dakota Watts has a 2.86 ERA with two saves in 13 games (22.0 innings) with 23 strikeouts and 13 walks. Kane Holbrooks has 3 saves in 14 games (20.2 innings) with a 0.87 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 27 striketouts and only 3 walks. Edgar Ibarra has a solid 3.92 ERA and 3-2 record in 20.2 innings. Liam Hendriks had a 2-1 record in 6 starts (34.0 innings) with a 1.32 ERA, 0.59 WHIP and 39K/4BB before taking the next step in his journey to Minnesota.
Brian Dozier and James Beresford both had two multi-hit games this week. Third baseman Anderson Hidalgo leads the Snappers at .330/.348/.466 in 88 at bats. Danny Rams returned from his brief stay at New Britain to hit his first home run of the season. Although he is hitting for only a .215 Average, Rams is tied with Hidalgo for the team lead with 9 doubles. Beresford is hitting .382 Average in his last ten games (34 at bats) to get his average up to .245/.316/.283 following a very slow start.
Eliecer Cardenas has made three appearances (5.0 innings) for the Snappers since his promotion from EST last weekend. Cardenas has yet to give up a run while allowing five hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Cardenas picked up the win in Monday's ten inning victory against Kane County. He picked up his second win last night at Wisconsin with 3.0 shutout innings to merit his nomination for this week's Player of the Week.

Can't wait...
for these guys to make the big club so they can LOSE TO THE YANKEES! This is driving me insane.
26 Moves!
No wonder why the organization had a bad week. At least the players are performing well individually.
New Britain
The Rock Cats should be better as the season moves on and they get guys like Gibson and Van Mil coming in. Their hitting is just putrid though, wow. You’d think in AA you’d be able to get 3 runs a game off of errors alone…
2 more moves you missed (if you count 7 day DL moves)
Brad Tippett and Bobby Lanigan were 7 day DL-ed, which means tonight we are very likely to get an extended does of one Mr. Shooter Hunt. Blake Martin will be the official starter, but he’s never started a pro game before and I find it tough to believe he can even go 5 innings — IF he lasts that long against the tough Maruaders offense. This is hopefully the beginning of easing Hunt back into a starting slot. I’m looking slash hoping for him to throw a bare minimum of 3 innings of relief, barring performance issues.
It gets better (re: tonight's shooter hunt non-start game)
Bryan Morris is pitching for Bradenton. Statistically he’s pretty much the best starter in the minors so far this year and it’s harder for the Bucco side of me to wrap my head around him not being called up to Altoona (AA) than it is for the Twins side of me to deal with Slama rotting in Rochester. I think the Miracle will be need a miracle…
Hunt did pitch 2.0 innings...
…unfortunately, after a string of excellent outings he reverted to the pitcher of old for the first time since his first time out this year. Hunt’s line: 2.0 innings, 0 hits, 2 striketouts, 4 walks, 1 wild pitch, 2 hit batters and 4 earned runs. Hunt needs to get this game behind him very quickly! With Blake Martin making a spot start, the Miracle did get a 6-5 win.
Dude.
I had a game thread for the game in the fanposts section. I cut work to listen to it. I know. I know all too well.

He isn't right now
I believe he’s in Florida in EST. Sounds like he might head down to play in the DSL next month, then maybe come back to play in the GCL.

I've got a few ideas...
Baseball reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.-Terence Mann/James Earl Jones in FoD
Anthony Swarzak has to be close to coming off the DL...
…and needs to get back into Rochester’s starting rotation. He could take Perkins spot with Perkins moving to the bullpen.
I think Swarzak sometime this season should make the Transition to the Bullpen.....
I see the 2011 staffs as follows:
Twins: Baker, Liriano, Blackburn, Slowey, Manship/ FA
AAA
1. Kyle Gibson
2. David Bromberg
3. Deolis Guerra
4. Tyler Robertson/ R. Mullins
5. Michael McCardell
BP: 1 of Delaney/Slama/Burnett, Swarzak, Steedley, Waldrop, Fox, Mullins/Robertson, Lugo?
AA
1. Cole DeVries (hmm)
2. Liam Hendriks
3. Santos Arias
4. Bobby Lanigan
5. Bruce Pugh
BP: Loek Van Mil, Matt Williams, Billy Bullock, Joe Testa, Mike Tarsi, Andrey Lobanov, Shooter Hunt
A+
1. Bradley Tippett
2. Dan Osterbrock (85 MPH?)
3. Tom Stuiffbergen
4. Adrian Salcedo
5. Matt Bashore
BP: Dakota Watts, Brad Stillings, Ben Tootle, Tony Davis, Matt Tone, Kane Holbrooks, Jhon Garcia
A
1. Michael Tonkin
2. B.J. Hermsen (did GREAT in start numero uno the other night)
3. June 2010 Draft Pick
4. Blayne Weller
5. Martie Garcia
BP: 2010 Draft Pick, Edgar Ibarra, Ed Cardenas, Miguel Munoz, Ramon Acosta/ Kelvin Mota
I know it is impossible to predict what will happen the rest of the way THIS SEASON so this could be off by a ton;
but if you just simply do a little bit of projecting Swarzak could be much more useful in my opinion, as a 7th or even 8th inning pitcher late in games as sort of a secondary Set-Up guy for 2011…..
Wow Blackburn makes nearly identical money as Baker does now....

Ummm Carlos Gutierrez should be in AAA but where?
and the other “2” of Slama/Delaney/Burnett
I see on the Twins roster or even dealt in a trade this year.

Steve
Often I agree with your post, but as far as positions go. Swarzak will stay as a starter. Like Duesing and Manship, if called up they will switch him at the Big League level. As far as McCardell goes, he doesn’t look as strong as once thought. (IMHO). As far as Gutierrez goes thats who should switch to relief. Plus I don’t whan to hear anymore about him having the best sinker in the Farm System. Gibson,Bromberg, and Guerra look strong. Tippett has been knock to relief I see. Some of the young arm are showing well.
by b1 on May 22, 2010 9:03 AM EDT up reply actions
Swarzak will need his innings
and he can get those as a starter in AAA. I like that the Twins are using the back end of their bullpen for young arms like Duensing and Manship to learn how to get big league hitters out. I think that’s a good way to go, see what it’s done for others like Phil Hughes, etc.
Whether Swarzak or others remain a starter when they reach the big leagues for good will depend on the “core” four starters health/contracts and who steps up and shows he can do it as a starter. The others will probably end up in the pen and work their way to meaningful 7th-8th inning roles through their performance in relief.
by Adam Peterson on May 22, 2010 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions
I think that lowered his ERA
That’s actually a step in the right direction
Gibson's first game at AA...
…was wonderful. He pitched 7.1 innings with 4 hits, NO runs, 1 strikeout and no walks as the Rock Cats beat Harrisburg, 6-0. YEAH! Rock Cats Win!!!!!!!!
correction...
…that was a typo, 10 strikeouts and 1 walk…
Plus a 9 / 3 GO/AO
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
Morales......
So, how soon before the Twins bring Jose back to Minneapolis in a swap for Drew Butera? Or will Jose become a minor league veteran and move on…being supplanted by every other catcher in the Twins system as a super backup?

some intriguing names are emerging this year
that arent as well known in the twins prospect world…
Liam Hendriks – Having a out of this world year start
Michael Tonkin – 7 innings, 3 hits, 0 er, 0 walks, 6 k’s today in front of billy smith twins gm
BJ Hermsen- An impressive first start in Beloit
Bruce Pugh- Putting up some big stirke out games, and showing he’s legit.
Twins farm system as a whole isnt doing that well, but there is a lot of good individual performances to like, especially from our pitchers.
Agree our "next wave"
Is looking strong.
But we still need power arm bullpen type guys

Remember......
Someone ahs to win, someone ahs to lose. Overall, the players may not be totally putrid, but maybe otehr teams in certain divisions are just outright better. The Twins have a lot of talent in the low, low minors and instructional league. A lot of promise. The good guys are spread pretty thin from Ft. Myers to Rochester, and many are still young and inexperienced. Amazing how few minor league free agents made it with the Twins this season and those that are on the Rochester team, for example, are not all that promising. Would I rather have Matt Macri and Jacque Jones in the majors, or Trevor Plouffe and Dustin Martin, for example.

A massive reworking of the New Britain roster...
…New Britain was involved in NINE roster moves on their day off yesterday. Moving up to AAA is Toby Gardenhire. Joining the Cats from AAA is Erik Lis. Moving down to Ft. Myers is Joe Benson, Estarlin De Los Santos and Chris Parmelee. Moving up from Ft. Myers is Brandon Roberts (was on rehab assignment), Chris Cates and Loek Van Mil (also on rehab assignment following EST). The Rock Cats also placed their most consistant reliever, Spencer Steedley on the DL.

Surprising and disappointing
that both Parmelee and Benson were demoted. Perhaps the organization is looking to send a message here. Neither had a good batting average, but Benson at least is getting on base and hitting with power. It’s curious who got promoted and demoted:
Promoted: Toby Gardenhire (.225/.295/.250)
Demoted: Joe Benson (.219/.346/.419), Chris Parmelee (.186/.241/.333)
I’m sure it’s a position thing, but it sure looks like “grit and hustle” as usual.

Rochester...
…is short of players and needs someone who can play many positions. Also, playing Ramos and Morales every day means they would like to have a backup catcher
They can have Butera
Get Morales up here and sent Butera to backup in AAA.
Morales......
Comes abck to Minnesota after he ahs shown he can throw the ball consistently, in a game situation, to second base.

Toby = bullpen catcher?
He can warmup a reliever in the pen, unlike the other infielders.
It's a question of readiness
TR was in New Britain watching the club. Those three guys were obviously struggling, each hitting under .200. Rather than force them to struggle in a league that is over their heads, he recommended getting them back on track at a more appropriate level.
One thing: The 2006 draft is officially the worst in the 00s. We still got some guys from the later rounds (Singleton, Manship, Valencia, Slama). But for Parmalee and Benson to not be ready for AA after four years in the minors is an indictment of their draft position.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
It would be an indictment if they ACTUALLY weren't ready.
But the numbers say they are.
Benson: looks like a moderately unlucky BABIP guy who’s also been striking out a little too much, not a guy who’s truly struggling, especially lately. His line drive rate for the year is 16% and it was 22% so far in May, so after a slow start he’s been squaring the ball up with aplomb, just not getting a lot to show for it. He’s walked almost 15% of the time, so it’s not like he’s not recognizing what’s being thrown. I just catergorically disagree with his demotion and hope he goes ape on the FSL to force his way back pronto.
Parmalee’s LD rate for 2010 = 19% and his BABIP = .229, so with all caveats re: LD rate not perfectly predicting BABIP in mind, you do that math. That’s just HORRIBLE luck. Yes, his Ks are up, too, but the only real area of concern (for either guy) is his walk rate, which has dropped precipitously. Again, though, he’s shown improvement in May, so WTF?
Roberts is an old 25 and I assumed he was just being used to fill space in the FSL — had no idea they were still bothering with a guy who’s never shown anything vaguely exciting.
I guess Terry Ryan sees 4 PAs and a couple outfield chances and he feels comfortable ignoring the deep numbers (oh wait — the Twins FO doesn’t use those numbers to evaluate performance anyway). At least that’s what it looks like. I just hope these are very short term moves designed to move some guys out of the way higher up
by tobynotjason on May 18, 2010 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions
Flaming out?
I agree that Benson was actually handling AA as well as anyone else. I’ll trust what Terry Ryan saw. Maybe he needed an attitude adjustment.
However, it is possible that Parmelee is hitting his ceiling and ain’t ever getting past AA. I agree that they both need to be in AA to see what they are made of. At this point I take trade offers on both of them. Parmelee projects to be Mike Jacobs, not Adam Dunn.
The FO. needs wins 7-28
Lis and Robberts will help batting 1 and 4th in the line up. In the last 7 games they have scored 1-2-1-1-3-6-1 per game for1 win.

Trade offers?
When someone is demoted in the minors, I think their trade value may be non-existent. Truly, if another team really cares, just wait for their release next season. Not going anywhere right now.

Joe Benson
Was Benson assigned with the understanding that he’d go back when Roberts was healthy (injury fill-in)? If that is the case he should understand.
I can see your point on Benson
But you can’t be suggesting that Parmalee and de los Santos are doing well.
Parmalee: .186/.231/.333 29K 6BB 102 AB
That’s not bad luck, that’s large quantities of suck.
de los Santos: .170/.248/.206 28K 10BB in 16 AB
Wow. Just wow.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
No, it is bad luck -- at least a significant chunk of it is.
Unless the batted ball numbers both firstinning and minorleaguesplits are just horribly wrong, he’s on the raw end of some end-of-the-bell-curve bad luck.
Parmelee’s line drive rate at New Britain is 19%. That’s good. He’s squaring up at a pretty normal rate when making contact. (Admittedly he’s striking out too much, but it’s not off the charts — it’s less than his 880 OPS 2008 season at Beloit.) BUT his BABIP on groundballs is .143 and his BABIP on flyballs is .103. That is terribly unlucky, especially for AA where the defense is much worse than MLB. He’s not fast so I wouldn’t expect him to hit .250 on grounballs, but he’s gonna hit better than .143 longterm. If you normalize all his BABIPs — taking into consideration hitting at AA defenses and him being a not-so-speedy guy — he “should” be hitting somewhere around .250 with an OPS in low 700s — not great, but for his first 5 weeks in AA not terrible.
I didn’t address Starling De Los Santos and don’t have a huge problem moving him down, but looking at the numbers here’s a speedy guy hitting groundballs more than 50% fo the time and getting a (wait for it) .128 BABIP on them. That’s just impossibly, unsustanably bad for a guy with above average speed. He’s actually seeing the ball OK (8.8% BB rate), although he’s also whiffing too often.
Sample size of 100-120 PAs just isn’t enough for everybody’s BABIP to get where it’s ultimately gonna be — you redirect 4-6 (of roughly 75) batted balls for either guy to slightly different spots on the field and their performace looks OK; you redirect 10 batted balls and these guys are the hottest guys on the teams. Note I’m not talking about changing their whiff rates — I’m just saying 3 groundballs go 8 feet to one side or the other, 1 flyball finds the gap, 1 linedrive isn’t hit right at somebody and voila.
Again: not saying either guy’s doing a great job, just saying it’s way too early to decide they need to be in Ft Myers if player development and/or merit are the sole criteria.
I actually deleted a compound part of my last sentence saying something like “or to generate a few more wins in the short term”, and it seems like other people have that idea, too, which may well be the case.

K rate
The LD% is just on batted balls. But when you’re striking out a third of the time, you’re not going to hit very well. At this rate, he’d strike out 160 times in 400 at bats. That’s not good.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
As stated, I considered K rate both in my analysis and (obviously) when normalizing his numbers for unlucky BABIP.
The reason his OPS would be low 700s and he’d be hitting .250 and not better is because of his K rate.
I thought the sentence “Note I’m not talking about changing their whiff rates” made that clear.
Nobody was striking out 1/3 of the time. Parmelee’s K rate was 25.9% — surely too high but for a K-prone guy in his first 5 weeks at a new level of baseball not hopeless.

Remember in the minors you might only
get 300 at bats, so 100 at bats is a good indicator it’s time for a change.

Scouting + small sample = decision
Add Terry Ryan’s scouting to the small sample and they can make a pretty solid decision.
Readiness
Benson is leading the team in OPS prior to his demotion and is above league average in OBP and SLG. Can’t quite figure out why you think he was struggling. His May stats are very impressive (283/411/609 in 56 plate appearances) and show he was adjusting just fine to AA pitching.
My guess is he had to move down to make room for Roberts.
Maybe I should have said "just not getting as much as should get to show for it".
Because as you say, his production has been fine, if unspectacular thanks to the slow April start (which, as I said, was somewhat unlukcy).

I think Benson was fine
but he was batting .219, and we know how the Twins organization tends to ignore OBP in favor of batting average (in general). I would have preferred to see Benson stick at AA and see if the batting average rebounds. He had lots of strikeouts though. It seems like there should be room in New Britain for both Benson and Roberts on a 7-28 team.
Then again, maybe Ryan saw a work ethic issue and wanted to send Benson a message.

The natives are restess
Roberts and Lis are local favorites. They needed to make room for them. That as much to do with this as anything. de los Santos, on the other hand, was really overmatched.

Some of these moves are surprising..
Terry Ryan was just in New Britain so it’s very likely he had input on many of these moves. He may have seen something with Parmalee and Benson and felt they were overmatched.
Parmelee wasn’t much of a surprise. In every level it has seemed like he’s been just good enough to move up. Well now that has caught up with him. Maybe they’ll let him catch up to a league for once.
Roberts and Van Mil were automatics. Gardenhire was a little puzzling but moving him to AAA and him not succeeding may force him into coaching sooner than later or he wasn’t playing up to his potential sitting at AA.
Gardy Jr. is a bench player,
he might was well be at AAA and not taking a roster spot of a younger player. I thought Benson would start at A because he olny played half of the season last year and they say he’s baseball raw, they kept Morales at Beloit too. Now when they move up Morales and Hicks they can join Benson. Thats an outfield!
Is Manship the answer to relief over
Slam,Delaney,Fox, or Waldrop? I don’t know, I guess it’s working good for Duensing. It’s seem to me though, that Slama and Delaney have pitched relief their whole career. We’ll see.
They need a guy who can pitch multiple innings at a time
When you have two short starts in a row, you can’t use your usual long guys fora few games.

Considering Slama
After reading the article about the “Twins way” of pitching I’m starting to think Slama is being held back because of one or both of the following reasons:
1) Too many walks and not enough work to correct it
2) Bad attitude in general (makeup)
The numbers say #1 is correct – he’s still walking too many. I have no insight as to #2.
His walks have been down...
…his last ten games. After being 4+ walks per nine innings earlier this year, I believe he is down to 3 or maybe a touch under in his last ten games.
Remember Ricky Barrett
Barrett dominated AAA all of 2008 and got nothing, and LaVelle finally hinted there was something “else” afoot and he just wasn’t going to get the call, then went to Japan, which is a different animal, and failed. Slama walked the leadoff hitter on 4 pitches yesterday — milb gameday (not sure if it’s accurate) had all 4 at the knees down the middle, very debateable balls.
by tobynotjason on May 20, 2010 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions
Ricky Barrett walked a lot of guys
227 BBs and 443 Ks in 414 innings of minor league ball.
By comparison, Slama is much better:
84 BBs and 300 Ks in 209 IPs.
There’s no conspiracy. Every time the Twins are looking for a reliever, they’re looking for a guy who fills a different role than Slama. Slama fills a right handed short reliever role, like Guerrier, Crain and Neshek. With Neshek out of the picture and Crain failing, Slama will get the call soon.

I hope so...
…but speaking of short relievers, anyone hear anything about Pat’s schedule?
I'd like to hope but
Ploffe hasn’t got the call, Valencia didn’t get the call last Sept. Slama was not put on the 40 man roster. To me the FO doesn’t want to send some guys to the Big Show. Why? I don’t know. They did it to Span too. Martin wasn’t invited to spring training?

I hope Plouffe's call-up
lasts longer then Manships!
by b1 on May 21, 2010 9:42 AM EDT up reply actions
Different cases
Last year, Valencia wasn’t added to the 40-man roster yet. Plouffe was on the 40-man, but we had a bunch of infielders in Casilla, Punto, Harris, Cabrera, etc, and he needed to work on a few things in AAA.
With Slama this year, it’s probably a combination of adding to the 40-man roster, as the Twins probably would prefer not to make a roster move and lose an option year if they don’t have to, and the fact that Slama can better work on his control in the minors.

CMath, could you imagine being the Rochester manager?
…Manship is set to be his starter on Friday. The Wings are already short a couple players, now he will have to piece together a bunch of relievers for that game. Even if Manship is only up here for a couple day, he probably won’t be back in time to make Friday’s start….thats assuming Hardy comes off the DL on Friday.
Mandalero was right again this week when the team was down to 21 players. Although they only were at that number for one or two games…not a week plus like a couple years ago.
That's life in AAA
I think Rochester was spoiled by the Orioles. They rarely called guys up because they signed so many free agents for the major league team. So guys would have two or three year careers down there routinely. The Twins move guys along much more quickly, once they get to AAA. When you do this and you have injuries, you’re bound to be short sometimes.
I don’t think it will be so bad, provided Guerra gives them a quality start tonight. They were rained out last night, so the bullpen will be rested. And they now have Gardy and Tolbert to bring up their quota of scrappiness and grit. :-)
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
The Red Wings.....
Keep getting flack because they have minor league free agents that don’t eally produce, and yet people say the Twins should send their proespects to the team faster than the norm, which, in reality, would also bring down oevrall production. You need the ncie mix.
I think, last year, the infielders for example played every position they possibly could. Try and name the definitive 1B, 2B, Ss, 3B DH for the 2009 team.
The Twins pulled a lot of pitchers out of that system.
And the DL seems to be used quite liberally these days…yet the guys stay around, so you seem to have a lot of one-again, off-again roster movemnts.

My Math
Tells me Manship now has 1 option left
So if he doesn’t stick with the team this time, it will be the last time he comes up unless there is a permanent spot.
by clutterheart on May 19, 2010 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Um no
He uses one option a year, no matter how many times he’s optioned i that year. This year is his second option year. Next year will be his last option year. He will be out of options in 2012.

Salcedo had a rough outing: 4 IP 5 ER
On the plus side, Shooter Hunt threw 4 scoreless innings in releif. Maybe.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
He really had one bad inning...
…gave up a lead off home run in the second and it went downhill from there, allowing four of his five runs in that inning. Was good to see him settle down and pitch a couple more innings. With that game behind him, will be anxious to see how he does next time out?
Hunt only had two strikeouts with three walks and a wild pitch, but no one seems to get many hits off him.
Sign Chris Coste
And assign him to Ft. Myers.
Not a bad idea
He can be that player/coach guy. If we did, I know just the person he should hook up with. ‘Course, she’s probably already latched onto Nuke.
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
Kyle Gibson doing it again
He’s pitched 7 innings in his 2nd start with a line of 4 hits 2 runs, 1BB, and 6 K’s. In addition to that 3 of the 4 hits given up were to major leaguers Mike Cameron and Jacoby Ellsbury down on rehab assignments. He also is continuing to pound the ground with a 13-2 GO/AO ratio this game.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
Looking pretty darn good
…Two of those hits were from Ellsbury and one of his was an infield single to the second baseman. He’s looking more and more like a September callup bullpen option.
Please Gibson, don’t injure yourself.
I'm still doubting we see him in Sept.
If for no other reason than he was so short of innings last year because of his injury. If he keeps this up though I can see him in Rochester sometime in July and having a shot at a callup or at least being a major contender for the rotation next Spring.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
Good point
I was wondering about his innings, too. I’m hoping he’ll be skipped at least once or twice in the rotation just to give him a break and save some innings. Because i don’t think he can go the whole year like this. Maybe that plan on putting him in the bullpen come August… ala Carlos Gutierez
How many times...
…does he have to dominate AA before AA is pointless, too? I’m NOT saying it is right now — I’m asking the question in earnest. If he has, say, 2 more dominant starts, is that enough? Do they leave him there a few months just to get NB a couple extra wins?

six consicutive starts or so
"You're thinking too much. Just have fun." -- Bennie "The Jet" Rodriguez in Sandlot
I'd go with 6...
And then start complaining after 8 and no promotion. :)
"I couldn't do that. Could you do that? Why can they do it? Who are those guys?"
What's the hurry?
Leave him in AA until the midseason break unless he throws 3 consecutive shutouts or some nonsense like that. He’s beaten Harrisburg (worst hitting team in the Eastern League) and Portland. Let him at least beat the best teams in the league (New Hampshire, Binghamton) before you promote him.
+1
Considering Gibson’s innings, I doubt we’ll see him in the majors before 2011 at the earliest. Let Gibson dominate AA, help turn that team around.
by Adam Peterson on May 22, 2010 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions
Like Slowey and Garza
if he keeps dominating he will get moved up. If he shows that he’s the best pitcher in the minors he could see Minnesota in Sept, but I don’t think so. I like that he’s competing with Gutierrez,Bromberg and McCarell. If he’s better then he could be competing with Manship,Swarzak,Guerra,Robertson and Fox. Let the best man win.
The most exciting part of the New Britain win...
…was that there appears to be some chemistry on the offense now that Lis and Roberts are back with Tosoni, Portes and the boys. Add Revere getting on base more often and maybe the ole Rock Cats can have some fun after a long, long spring.
Thompson or Kelly
haven’t played at FT. Myers in about 3 days or sence DeLosSantos,Benson and Parmelee were sent down. I find this odd sence Thompson and Kelly are both good hitters and would improve the line-up. I wounder if they are giveing the other fielders a chance before cuts? I’d like to see Dozier move-up. That would give them Kelly,DeLosSantos,Thompson and Dozier in the infield. All four are with in a year apart in age, Kelly and Thompson ’86 and Dozier and DeLosSantos ’87
Thompson and Kelly have had injury issues.
Not sure if that’s why they haven’t played the last few days, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
