OT: Best Steakhouse in Minn?

What's up Twins fans!  Every year, my Dad, who lives in Los Angeles, and Myself, who lives now in Tampa, fly into a different city to watch the Texas Rangers play a different team.  It allows us to check out different stadiums and cities and experience the best steakhouse & resturants each city has to offer.

The 1st year we of course started in Texas, then hit NY to catch a game in the last year of Yankee Stadium, then last year we went to KC to check out the new Kauffman stadium.  This year we chose to check out the new Target field memorial day weekend and we'll be staying in the city.  Yankee fans pointed us in the direction of Peter Lugars Steakhouse (which is still #1 for us), and KC fans pointed us to Plaza III (which again was outstanding).  Where would you guys and gals recommend we go in Minn?  All suggestions welcome!

We're there Fri night - Monday which allows us to do some site seeing and a golf game.  Anything we should do or see is also helpful.

Thanks in advance everyone!  Really excited to see Target Field & Maur play.  Hope its a great series!

-Mike

Don't Eat at Steak Houses Much

But there is always Murray’s downtown. They are the ones with the new steak sandwich at Target Field (which is not as good as the Tony O Cuban sandwich, FYI). The decor is definitely…. tacky. But it’s been around forever and has some good meat.

I hear a lot about Manny’s too, but never been there.

As far as other things to do…

I would say for one thing, take in that baseball game! The field has an awesome location downtown, and everyone around here is so excited, baseball fans are all over the warehouse/entertainment district downtown long before and after the game.

The Guthrie Theater is a big draw, one of the best in the nation I hear. Even if you can’t/don’t want to see a show, you can still go there and get food and/or drinks and check out the “endless bridge” which goes over the Mississippi and has some good views of the city.

Personally, I feel some of the best stuff around here is outside. The chain of lakes in Minneapolis, Minnehaha Falls, and that stuff is great if you like to hike, be outside, etc. You can rent paddle boats, kayaks, or canoes at Lake Calhoun in uptown and then go through the lakes.

Tough one

No pun intended. I would rank them thus:

Mancini’s
Murry’s
Manny’s
Ruth’s Chris

I prefer the local joints, but I have to admit that Manny’s and Ruth’s Chris make the best steaks. Mancini’s and Murry’s beat everybody else on the appetizers, cocktails, ambiance, etc. And their steaks are very close to the best.

Here is one nobody has listed yet....

Fogo De Chao! Probably the best establishment I have ever been to in my entire life! If you have never been there, I highly insist you try it out! Amazing service, atmosphere and the best meats in town! It is the only place I will put my personal “stamp” on……

This is great guys -

Please keep the suggestions coming!

S-Dot: Fogo De Chao I will agree is fantastic – 100%. While its a great dinner, we’re looking for the place that only your city has.. Places like Fago, Flemings, and Ruth Chris are great establishments but we have them also in Tampa & LA.

If anyone comes to Tampa, www.BernsSteakhouse.com is a MUST.

Who else has favorites and suggestions??

Lots of good options

But if you are seeking the traditional, extravagant pure streakhouse, its got to be Mannys. It is king of all.

I also like Pittsburg Blue.

I always loved that one.

+1 on Pittsburg Blue

Mancini's

Murray's

Murray’s is the classic response, it’s been around forever, their silver butterknife steaks are really incredible. I don’t think the inside is tacky, it’s the type of place where the decor hasn’t changed in 60 years since it was a fine dinner club in the 50’s.

Fogo de Chao, which some others have mentioned, is really good too, but that’s different, it’s a brazillian steakhouse, I believe, which is obviously a different experience.

There is also the Capital Grill, which isn’t purely a steakhouse, but is incredibly good. They have a tendency to literally put lobster on top of everything. Your filet mingon will come basically stuffed with whole lobster claws, your salad will come topped with them, your mashed potatoes will have them, they will be floating in your soup. It’s pretty crazy.

But you asked for steakhouse, and while there are plenty of choices, I’d say Murray’s is probably the long-standing powerhouse brand.

Yeah, ok not tacky

Just trying to explain that it certainly isn’t a hot trendy place. Just a classic place that has been around forever and hasn’t changed much. If you’re looking for a classic local place, Murray’s would be the way to go.

Yeah

That “hasn’t changed much, ever” idea still really hits it on the head. That’s a big part of their appeal and brand, really.

Jax Cafe

Has never let me down.

The steaks are great, and the outside garden / patio is awesome.

Jax Cafe is absolutely the best.

The bone in tenderloin steak is the best you can get in this town. If you want a little fun before or after, Gastoff’s German restaurant is 2 blocks down from Jax and they have boots of beer, polka and a fun crowd.

Best of the Twin cities came out last week

http://www.citypages.com/bestof

I don’t agree with everything on it, but it covers a lot, and without knowing what you and your dad like to do, it’s a good place to start.

Stella's in Uptown

isn’t a steakhouse—but it has a great menu—seafood is what it is really known for, but it has a rooftop bar that offers a great view of downtown Minneapolis. Great food is also found at the Bullseye. Try the Townball Tavern on the second level for a Juicy Lucy or a Murray’s steak sandwich…I’ve tried both and they are awesome! I also love the Nachos Grande!! Have fun!

Juicy Lucy

I’ve seen these on TV – the Townball Tavern on the 2nd level I take it is @ Target Field? Thanks for the heads up with Stella’s too – looks like a good place to go after the game Sat night. Thanks!

Hrbek's has Juicy Lucy's too

They are just called Rex Burgers. Be careful with those, I bit into one and the whole insides splatted out onto my leg.

Capital Grille

Hands down the best food (steaks and otherwise) in the state, and it’s not even close.

Corey Ettinger writes for Infieldirt.com, a site that is primarily Twins related, but which has frequent notes, stories, and thoughts from other teams around baseball, with a focus on the AL Central. If you live in the Fargo area, you can listen to Corey on the Derek Hanson show every Tuesday at 3:30 on AM1660.
