Matt Capps
The twins are close to a deal to get Matt Capps from the Washington Nationals. I dont mind this deal because Capps is a good pitcher but if the rumors are true that were giving up Wilson Ramos of him i think that is wayyyyy to much and dont not like the deal. Philly gave up less than him for Roy Oswalt! I just feel that we can get way more than Capps since everyone in the league seem so high on Ramos as he is a cant miss prospect. What do you guys think????
I guess its now a done deal http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/07/twins-discussing-matt-capps.html

Its a done deal
MLB Network said about 10 minutes ago that its a straght up trade. Unless they’re wrong (Which I highly doubt) then its Ramos for Capps which Im fine with because Billy Smith has proven to know what hes doing. Everybody complained about the Younf for Bartelett and Garza trade and look at it now. We complained about Johan and look at how hes pitching and we got our SS of the future, a good bullpen arm and an emerging prospect out of that deal. AND some people complained about the Pavano trade last year and look where that got us. Thus as much as I dont exactly agree with the trade I have faith in Bill Smith
What you just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your entire rambling incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Ok
Garza just threw a no-hitter. Young has played better, but at least Garza had been consistently good ever since he left.
Bartlett had a season last year, comparable to Young’s. Just as he struggled this year, Young can easily revert to his past lack of success.
Not sure
I’m not really sure how I feel about this. I have no problem with trading Ramos, but I thought he could have gotten somebody better than Matt Capps. I guess if I just keep reminding myself of Ramos’ AAA OPS then it will make me feel better.

Thought we coulda got Capps for less
but as long as we’re giving up JUST Ramos, then I guess I’m fine with it

What?
We gave up something in addition to Ramos!? Overpay on top of overpay!
I'm fine with it...Ramos deserves a shot in the major leagues..and from what I've read
The Nats had wanted Valencia, Hicks and Revere….so i’m happy with the deal..Welcome to the Team Matt!!!!
Good Move
Ramos could prove me wrong but we don’t need a catcher in the next few years so flipping him for bullpen help should be a plus for this year and more. I can live with the POTENTIAL long term lose for this short term gain.
Testa as well...
He’s a nice minor league bullpen arm with upside. This appears to be a pretty poor deal.

So
does Capps take Rauch’s place, or Guerrier’s?
And if he takes the closer role, will Rauch shank him?
Am I the only one who thinks was a terrible trade?
The team with the AL best bullpen ERA just traded their top trade chip for another reliever owed 3.5 M with an arb raise next year. Oh wait, we had to add to sweeten the deal. Great.
they are paying most of the salary this year
according to the article.
No, you are not
Between this thread and the trade deadline thread, I think I’ve seen one or two posts praising the deal, out of probably 40 or so. Horrible overvaluation of a “closer” (which, along with Nathan’s current contract, seems like the Twins’ modus operandi).

Capps has pitched in useless, no pressure situations
with nats and pirates…better hope this isnt an issue
Save situation in the big leagues
there’s always pressure, no matter how bad your team is
a closer’s mentality is what makes him a good or bad closer, and if his mind is in the right place, it’s doesn’t matter what the situation is, he’s going to come through

Disagree
a closer’s mentality is what makes him a good or bad closer,
A closer’s skill at pitching is what makes him a good or bad closer. There are not a lot of guys who are good pitchers but lack the mental fortitude to close, and even fewer mediocre pitchers who somehow become great in that role.

Yep
I don’t think we should think of this as getting a closer. Matt Capps is now the best reliever on the team, which is a pretty big deal for this season IMO. Keep in mind that our bullpen isn’t going to keep up the great ERA mark the rest of the way.
Long term though, we could have gotten way more for Ramos. Why did we do this??
because this is the year
and it didnt look like Ramos was helping his value

Ramos Value
Ramos is not nearly of the value everyone seems to be thinking he is. Everyone in the league knows that he is our main trade chip, because he is not a backup and severely blocked by Mauer and is going to go before someone like Gibson/Hicks/Sano add on top of that that he has been severely under preforming in AAA and has had a few injury problems this year that leads to a low trade value. They wanted to make a move for bullpen help and where worried about Rauch so they used their trade chip that would not hurt them in the future in the slightest to get a good closer obviously not Nathan but putting up good numbers and an upgrade to our pen in both a closer and a setup middle relief role since we can use Rauch more in situations to his strenght. They got what they good for an area they were concerned about for a prospect that was having a bad year so probably got sold a little low but had no future in the organization not a bad move at all.
Two things
Philly gave up less than him for Roy Oswalt!
#1. Roy Oswalt is less than a month away from being 33. Capps is 26.
#2. I have to disagree with the idea that Philly gave up less. They traded JA Happ, who is a 27 year old with several years of major league credentials as a reliever and starter as well as one of their top 6 prospects in Anthony Gose. I’d say that is definitely more than a prospect who has yet to prove he can play in AAA, much less the major leagues.
Counterpoint
1) Roy Oswalt is an ace starter. Capps is a mid-tier closer.
2) Miguel Sano is a prospect who has yet to prove he can play in AAA. That doesn’t make him worthless.
Did you see Friday's Phils-Nats Line?
Roy Oswalt is an ace starter. Capps is a mid-tier closer

one bad start does not make
an ACE a mediocre pitcher. You should know this!

Besides, this is a frequent occurrence of just traded for pitchers...
…it often takes a game or two to get settled in on a new club, so it’s certainly WAY too early to judge the Oswalt deal as a bad one

JA Happ
= Scott Baker/Nick Blackburn/Kevin Slowey. There is nothing special about Happ when compared to our three SP. As a matter of fact, Baker is probably better than Happ. The Twins could have easily sent Scott Baker and Ben Revere to Houston for Roy Oswalt.
