Ha!

Oops, I swear I read “LEAST” likely to receive a callup right before I voted.

I think a lot of people did

Delaney is the only one who might be added. Hughes is out for the year with an injury. Guerra was shut down for the rest of the year recently. de los Santos hasn’t played above A ball.

Is Hughes out?

I didn’t know that, it wasn’t listed on the 40-man roster page. If that’s the case, Delaney’s the only realistic option.

Throws that vote right out the window.

Yeah, he had surgery a couple of weeks ago

Hughes is out for the year?

Were I the Twins GM, I would immediately place him on the 60-day disabled list, in order to clear a 40-man roster spot for my preferred September call-up: JACQUE JONES. It’s not even a purely sentimental move – the team could use another outfielder on the bench, and they could even do dual defensive replacements for Delmon and Kubel if they wanted.

Last I heard

Hughes was only “potentially” out for the rest of the season. He’s my favorite option for an infielder. But if he’s not able to be called up we could use an outfielder. I like the idea of having a defensive replacement for both Kubel and Delmon if we need them.

by Anjemon on Aug 31, 2010 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Hughes plays outfield, too.

Not well, but he does play there.

But moving him to that 60-day DL would allow the Twins to add someone, whether it was Jones, Revere or someone else.

by Jesse on Aug 31, 2010 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions

So someone who is better defensively than Delmon

That’s my OF qualification. I don’t know that Hughes would qualify… but if he does, all the better.

Hernia and groin surgery in mid August

Sounds like out for the year to me.

He hasn't played since June

He played somewhere between 7-9 games after he was sent down in May. He had sport hernia surgery and they “fixed” another problem (groin). To top that off, he isn’t that good in the first place.

My picks to get called up:

Burnett
Neshek
Perkins
Slama
Morales
Hughes
Plouffe

by Jesse on Aug 31, 2010 4:20 PM EDT reply actions

Not all right away

I see Morales up on 9/1 and the rest after 9/7 when Rochester’s season ends. They still want the rest to get playing time and stay sharp. Hughes is out and Plouffe might not get a callback with Tolbert around.

by DJL44 on Aug 31, 2010 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, absolutely.

I should have mentioned that.

by Jesse on Aug 31, 2010 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Morales

I’d actually prefer if they called up Morales today, rather than waiting until tomorrow, so they could get down to 11 pitchers for the playoff roster (although I think they carried 12 last year).

Playoff roster shouldn't be a problem

We have 7 players on the DL, so they can basically adust the playoff roster as much as they like. It’s the KRod exception.

by Jon Kammerer on Aug 31, 2010 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

True...

But I was under the impression that they had to replace a position player with another position player or a pitcher with another pitcher, so if they were carrying 12 pitchers today, their playoff roster also has to have 12 pitchers. I could certainly be mistaken.

Not hughes

He had surgery and hasn’t played all year.

by JMP on Aug 31, 2010 5:14 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah.

Just 22 games. Not good.

by Jesse on Aug 31, 2010 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions

My predictions:

Morales: lock, 3 catchers=Gardy bliss
Plouffe: 75% possibility, evidently the only warm position player body left. If he wasn’t an A-hole when he was up this year, he’ll probably be back.

Then we need some arms to go with our 3 closer/2 setup men bullpen. The arms that can pitch a few garbage innings here and there.

Perkins: 85%. Got a good feeling he’ll be back for long relief.
Burnett: 75%. Hopefully we like him and hope he’s a bullpen arm for years to come. Let’s get him back up then.
Slama: 50% Maybe, maybe not. I have no feel for his situation.

Neshek: 2% chance of callup. The Twins hold grudges and have long memories and he’s at the back of the line in the doghouse.

Everyone else: No chance. Let’s not forget the Twins are cheap! And calling guys up means you got to pay them a prorated MLB salary. The only possibility I see is if they can make a 40 man move and call up another OF. The idea of Repko is a good one for us, although the reality leaves a bit to be desired, him being all glove/no hit at the moment.

Um, where have you been?

Let’s not forget the Twins are cheap!

Funny, because I just saw them hand out a massive check to some catcher. I think he’s still around here somewhere, he couldn’t have gone far.

I think you’re confusing frugal and responsible with cheap. They don’t throw money around needlessly, but they have shown that they are not shy about spending money if it makes the team legitimately better. They’ll bring in anyone they think will do that. Boosting the payroll for a month or two is hardly a blip on their radar.

by Cobra312004 on Aug 31, 2010 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

No, they won't bring in just anyone

We are in a playoff hunt and if we weren’t cheap/frugal/whatever, it would be all hands on deck. We would call up a guy like Swarzak just in case we were in a blowout and needed him for a few innings to save another guys arm for another day. We are cheap, so we won’t do that.

I believe we need bullpen arms to pitch the few garbage innings to save other arms for the more important innings. We had this same exact conversation last year around here. I remember being peeved that we didn’t call up a few more arms to fill in if needed. By my limited one minute research, last year our September callups were Tolbert, Buscher, and Justin Huber for position players and only one pitcher, Armando Gabino. It’s not ALL about money, but that plays a big part in it.

Which is just terrible decision-making.

We’re talking about something in the neighborhood of 60k per player, which is like one moderately key hit or one inning pitched in a competitive game. That’s not money that’s worth saving.

Neshek is arleady getting paid

He’s making major league money in the minors

by DJL44 on Aug 31, 2010 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions

More fun with research, Twins Sept callups of recent memory

2009: Tolbert, Brian Buscher, Justin Huber, Armando Gabino
2008: None?!?!?!?!
2007: Luis Rodriguez, Slowey, Blackburn, Lew Ford, Jose Morales, Matty Lecroy
2006: Scott Baker, Chris Heintz, Terry TIffee, Glen Perkins, Alexi Casilla, Josh Rabe
2005: 6 callups
2004: 5 callups
2003: 5 callups

So we were on the 5-6 callup plan for awhile and the last two years, it’s been zero and 4 callups. I predict 4 again for this year.

I just thought of someone who hasn't been mentioned...

…but actually might have a decent shot at callup.

Brock Peterson. He’s our AAA 1B, not having a good year, and the Twins would have to make a 40 man move to call him up. But, he plays 1B and we don’t have even a semi-legit guy to put there now except for Cuddyer.

Super Darkhorse candidate:

Chris Parmelee. AA 1B/OF I don’t think he has to go on the 40 man next year, but I’m not sure. If he does, may as well do it sooner than later and kill the OF and the 1B bird with one stone. The Twins are high on the guy, as we are sending him to the Arizona Fall League this year.

They're not going to start his clock

Peterson would be more likely because he’ll be a minor league free agent and it would be a good gesture. Kind of like Tommy Watkins. I can see Jacque getting a callup to sit on the bench for nights like tonight.

I’m glad Toby’s on the DL.

by DJL44 on Aug 31, 2010 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Same with Joe Benson, I believe.

And other 2006 draft picks.

Tyler Robertson, Steve Singleton, Brian Dinkleman.

Danny Valencia, Jeff Manship, and Anthony Slama are already on the 40-man roster.

by benhertz on Aug 31, 2010 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Gardy said 5 or 6

They figure to get Punto and Mijares off the DL and perhaps Morneau. A couple pitchers, an infielder, and Morales should be about it. Morales has been less than inspiring at Rochester, as has Plouffe. Really everybody that is left there hasn’t forced their way back. Hughes to the 60-day list would mean big league money and service time for him. I am not sure the Twins want to do that.
