Around SBN: Knicks 90, Raptors 87: "Shump and Lin wouldn't let us lose."

Will we see Jacque Jones in a Twins uniform?

The Twins are down to three healthy outfielders, Denard Span, Delmon Young and Jason RepkoMichael Cuddyer is healthy, but with no one else available to play first base he isn't available for outfield duty until Justin Morneau returns.  With the rosters expanding today, who is available to solve this problem?

Star-divide

The first question is do the Twins really need another outfielder.  It looks like there is a real possibility that Morneau may not return this season, thus, Cuddyer will be staying at first base.  How serious is Kubel's injury?  Initial reports indicated that the X-Ray was negative, so he should be back in a few days or a week or so?  Adding an outfielder not only makes a lot of sense, it may be a necessity.

The only postion player on the 40-man roster who is not currently with the Twins (Plouffe and Morales were called up today) or on the disabled list (Punto, Morneau and Luke Hughes at Rochester) is Estarlin De Los Santos.  De Los Santos is an infielder who is a long way from being major league ready.  So there isn't any help on the 40-man roster.  Thus, anything the Twins do will require them to make another 40-man roster move.  They will likely be taking a player or two off the roster after the season so it shouldn't be a problem doing that now.

The outfielders at Rochester are Dustin Martin, Brandon Roberts, Jacque Jones and utility man Brian Dinkelman.  Martin had a great first couple months and hasn't done much since.  Jones was also very good before his injury and was out until a few weeks ago.  Dinkelman has had a solid season while Brandon Roberts has been Rochester's best hitter since his promotion last month, is an excellent defensive outfielder and has a lot of speed on the bases.  Another move that could be considered would be to call up Brock Peterson, he could play first base with Cuddyer moving to the outfield, when needed.

Or could they go to New Britain and call up Joe Benson?  Benson will have to be added to the 40-man roster this fall, thus, he would be the logical choice over Ben Revere who won't need to be added to the roster until after the 2011 season.

The sentimental move would be to add Jacque Jones to the 40-man roster and bring him back for the pennant race.  He is an ex-Twin and a veteran who just may get a key at bat or two in the final stretch.  Assuming the Twins make a roster move and call up an outfielder.....who do you think it will be?

Jones

I really hope it’s #11

Do you want to know the terrifying truth, or do you want to see me sock a few dingers?

If not Jones, then Roberts

Do they need to add Roberts to the roster or risk losing him?

Small worry.......

Should the Twins be concerned about their 1st base depth?

Brock Peterson…IS he better than a converted infielder moving around, or Jose Morales…if push came to shove (or Danny Valencia, I guess).

What about Brendan Harris. Do this Twins return him to the 40-man now. He can play 1st. He can play the outfield. He is being paid to play somewhere by the Twins not only in 2010, but 2011.

Who can the Twins get rid of? Can they move Luke Hughes back to the big league roster and put him on the 60-man, freeing up a roster spot? Do they really expect to keep Mr. Estarlin on the 40-man next season?

What is the life of Anthony Swarzak?

Hey, wait, can the Twins 60-day Justin Morneau? Is there a limit on how many guys can be 60-dazed?

Seriously, Repko served his purpose. I don’t see him being held on the 40-man, and thus back in 2011.

Harris - no way

Brendan Harris is under team control and off the 40 man roster. They don’t add him back unless they are forced.

They won’t pay Luke Hughes extra to put him on the disabled list, that’s dumb.

Repko will return unless they don’t want to offer arbitration. He won’t make much money.

There will be some 40 man roster cleanup this offseason, it already started with Van Mil.

Van Mill was taken off to make room for Fuentes, but when Fuentes leaves...

And I expect they’ll get room from these free agents:

Pavano
Hudson
Rauch
Guerrier
Mayhay
Flores

These guys will probably need to be added:
Benson
Parmelee
Robertson
Bromberg
McCardell

That leaves one slot for a Rule 5 or free agent. I doubt they want to add anybody like Jones or Roberts unless they absolutely have to.

They currently have 43 on the 40-man roster...

…including three on the 60-day disabled list. So to open six spots, they will need to deal with nine players.

The five Cmathewson mentioned will be candidates with Benson, Parmelee and Bromberg definites. Another player that is likely certain to be added is Rene Tosoni.

Others that will get strong consideration include: 1) Kyle Waldrop, 2) Matt Fox, and 3) Miguel Munoz. Several others would be considered, but have been injured often and likely are safe…Steve Hirschfield, Spencer Steedley and Brad Tippett.

They'd better keep Waldrop

They can drop Delaney to keep Waldrop

I agree on Waldrop

But I’d like to see them drop de los Santos to add Waldrop. They might be able to drop Hughes as well because of his injuries.
