Minnesota Twins Purchase Contract of Ben Revere
This is sort of unexpected, although Gardy has been pushing for it..
There isn't much to say about this right now, other than the fact that Ben Revere was pulled just prior to first-pitch of the Rack Cats game this afternoon. He'll be in Minnesota tomorrow.
There are two questions that I have about this.
- Who does Minnesota remove from the 40-man roster in order to accomodate him? I assume Luke Hughes could still be moved to the 60-day disabled list.
- Does this have anything to do with Jason Kubel? I'm 99% sure it doesn't, and it's more a move that will help the Twins avoid situations like they were in on Thursday night with their bullpen, but it would still be good to hear that it officially has nothing to do with Kubel. This Twins offense needs as many people on deck as possible.
Revere has hit .305/.371/.363 this year with the Rock Cats, including .359/.419/.462 in his last ten games. He'll likely be available to play all three outfield positions, and should already be able to top the production of Jason Repko.
If you want more info on this as it happens, follow Phil Mackey on Twitter or check out his notes from ESPN1500. Here's his quote from Gardy:
"[Revere will] come in off the bench, fifth outfielder, baserunning, all of the above. Maybe get some swings too."
We'll have more on this tomorrow. Add new information in the comments section.

I doubt it has anything to do with Kubel
Just a 5th OF and pinch runner. Excited to see what he has to offer.
Arizona
Can he still play in the AFL?
This is a shocker. Didn’t expect they really needed another outfielder.
The future of Ben Revere
It looks like the Twins think he’s ready for the majors right now. If that’s the case do they shift Delmon to RF in the offseason? Revere is a born left fielder.
Another thought
This might be the ideal time to trade Delmon Young. He’s just had a breakthrough season. His defense is only going to get worse (scary thought) and he’s getting expensive. I don’t really want him locked up long-term with all these outfielders coming through the system. If Delmon (plus Slowey or Blackburn?) can bring back a stud starting pitcher it might be the ideal time to hit the “reset” button on that trade.
That's an idea.
Not sure how realistic it is, but theoretically, Delmon’s value would be the highest it’s been since coming to MN and he’d still be under team control for two more years. That has value.
I'd be all for trading the Demon
but if his hitting in August continues thru Sept.(as it has so far) combined with his horrific outfield play, who’s going to give anything of value for him? I’m thinking the Twins might be stuck with him unless they give him away or release him. He’s hitting .200 since Aug. 2 with a .219 on base%.
Yes.
When I suggested this a month ago I was abused verbally & physically on this board, but I guess it’s not such a daring idea now:-). Hopefully Delmon can get some kind of swing together this month to increase his future trade value.
The Twins need RHB but I don’t think they can afford a 25 year old DH with questionable plate skills.
I remember when you were physically abused for suggesting we trade Young

so you can run and tell that, run and tell that, run and tell that

A lot of that might depend on Morneau, Cuddyer...and Thome, for that matter.
If Morneau’s healthy Cuddyer will still be in RF which means Kubel is at DH, if Morneau is not Cuddyer will play 1B which means RF would be Kubel, if Thome comes back and Morneau is healthy the DH situation gets clogged up again, if Thome comes back and Morneau isn’t healthy then keeping Revere makes it hard to find PT for Kubel and/or Thome………..
Right now, it’s just a cup of coffee. The rest will have to work itself out in the fullness of time. But it could be interesting.
Kubel
they said on the radio during the game that Kubel wanted to play today but Gardy said no

no
he just hasnt been that good for years and years along with the fact that he is not on the 40 man not a viable pinch runner not a viable defensive sub and yet another left handed bat. I like the guy and love that the organization brought him back but he just have a shot at a spot above AAA.
Revere in left field...hmmm
Then you move Delmon to RF, where he had his best year with Tampa. This assumes Morneau doesn’t return, but then you’d have a pretty fast outfield, a good first baseman, and they’re all good hitters. Plus, Repko can sub for any of them. Not a bad setup.
I think what will happen is this
Ben Revere will start in left field with no more changes. This means that Span will start in Center and Kubel in Right. I can see Delmon Young being part of the trade that brings Prince Fielder to Minnesota. The Brewers are trying to get out of that contract.

could you imagine that lineup?
span
hudson/casilla
mauer
morneau
fielder
kubel
cuddy
hardy
valencia
"Brian Cardinal left Purdue being the only Boilermaker to receive both the "Mr. Hustle" Award and the "Courage" Award four years in a row"
There should be a DF - designated fielder
then we could sub Ben for Delmon in the field every time.
Common Sense Here
This doesn’t signal the beginning of the Revere era in Minnesota. He is here as an extra OF, fast guy who can pinch run and somebody that can hit better than Repko. He won’t get to hit much in the last four weeks unless there are injuries or games like the Detroit mudfight on Thursday. If Revere would get a chance to get some ABs, perhaps he could make a statement for next year as Valencia has, but he only has four weeks and I’m assuming all of the outfielders are healthy enough to play as of today.
My guess is that Revere is a better fielder right now than Delmon, so we could see him in the field some. It certainly won’t hurt his cause if he plays well in his chances going forward, but it will take something special for him to force his way in for 2011.

I would agree
…except Gardenhire LOVES Ben Revere. He’s been lobbying the front office for 2 solid weeks to get Revere up to the majors (according to the Sunday PiPress). Gardy wants him in the major leagues and apparently he’s won the argument with Bill Smith. Now he’s here and he’s a perfect fit for LF. Delmon is a perfect fit for RF but the Twins have Cuddyer and Kubel that they both like better. What is the downgrade for next year using Revere instead of Delmon? You’ll get the same average with less power but more speed. You’ll get a big boost on defense. They can break in Revere by platooning him with Repko also. Maybe it’s a 1 win downgrade. They can probably the team by more than 1 win by dealing Delmon for pitching.
This starts Revere a year early...
…as they didn’t have to add him to the 40-man roster until November, 2011. The biggest impact this will have on Mr. Smith is that he will now have to find one more spot on this November’s 40-man roster. When adding Parmelee, Benson and others, one more player will have to come off.
Revere had a wonderful season at New Britain. He was the second best hitter (.305 Average) in the league. What is interesting is that in my preliminary year end grading, Joe Benson actually graded out a touch higher.
But the Twins are in a playoff hunt which got more heated after the Red Sox played dead yesterday. The criticism many gave Mr. Smith yesterday over not having a couple extra relievers in the pen is the reason Revere is here. Moreso than a statement about Kubel’s being ready to come back, this may be a sign that they don’t expect Morneau back. With Cuddyer locked into first base, they do need another outfielder down the stretch. Is Revere ready? Probably not, but his skill set is such that he will be ready to contribute sooner than most as we saw last spring when he was very good in spring training.
With the Twins strong group of outfielders getting close, yes, the Twins need to package one of three outfielders to get a player of need (maybe a top line starter) to make them the best they can be in 2011. Whether that is Young, Kubel or Cuddyer (least likely) would likely be determined by actual perception of other general managers. All are attractive hitters, all have some defensive liabilities….some more than others.
Delmon has the most value
Still under team control, not as expensive, youngest. Kubel only has the option year left and Cuddyer is only really valuable to a team looking for a first baseman (which is exactly why the Twins want to keep him).
I'd like to see...
The Twins deal Delmon, bring back Thome, and put Cuddyer/Kubel in a strict platoon in RF, presuming Morneau comes back. That will almost certainly never happen with Gardenhire at the helm, but it would be a good use of assets for next year presuming Delmon can bring back the most value.
Revere will start today in right field...
…if Jason Kubel isn’t ready to go. The biggest reason Revere is coming up is that Jason Repko is going home to be with his wife who is about to have their first child.
So do you move revere into right field to replace cuddyer (he is starting to get old) or do you move span back to right field and put him in center
or put him in left because he will have better defense than young or kubel and split DH duty and spot field starts for them (When Thome is gone)?
How does revere fit in, in 2011?
Right now he is the reserve outfielder but what about later on?
Later on he's a left fielder
He has good range but not much arm. Very similar defensively to Shannon Stewart.
