Game 138: Royals @ Twins
Kansas City Royals at Minnesota Twins, Sep 6, 2010 2:10 PM EDT
Know Thine Enemy: Royals Review
I'd like to thank the Rangers for letting us know there are ways other than "Scott Ullger" for a third-base coach to impact a game.
Slowey makes his first start in two weeks. Please stay healthy. Please.
Generic McIrishname came over to the Royals in the Alberto Callaspo trade.

Notes:
- ESPN1500's Phil Mackey Tweets that Brian Fuentes might be available today or tomorrow.
- He also notes that Valencia wants to play but is being held out again as a precautionary measure.
- Multiple sources are reporting that Glen Perkins and Pat Neshek will be promoted after the game today, and that Jacque Jones will not.
- The streaking White Sox play the Tigers at noon. Good matchup: Jackson v. Scherzer. Does not appear to be on WGN or MLB for those playing at home.
Enjoy the game, everybody.

I have a feeling we'll see Revere today
What you just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your entire rambling incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Two things
1) Valencia – that note makes me like the guy even more. He seems to really be enjoying his time with the Twins and he has been huge for us – and the fact that he Wants to play even if not 100% shows it.
2) Neshek – I really hope he has it figured out again. I would love for Pat to be able to contribute for us the next two months!

What's our rotation looking like right now?
Is it Liriano, Stache, Slowey, Duenslinger, Blackbeard? I’ve been following the Vikes and unhealthy amount the last couple days and am a little out of it.
Yes, and Baker back soon

Nooo. It’s just really bad. It makes me think he’s an escaped Alzheimer’s patient.

dibble
i know the twins wouldnt do it . love em or hate em hes entertaining and speaks his mind. hed have to replace gladden though. fine with me gordo -dibble that would be funny
Ugh.
UGH. We do NOT need Hawk Harrelson light. UGH.
Sorry, but I feel strongly about this.
Go Twins!
Seriously.
I don’t get why people like Dibble.
my thoughts exactly
who IS that guy?
by twinscrazy_german on Sep 6, 2010 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions
Well I hope he makes it
if only because commentators are going to get knots in their tongues
by twinscrazy_german on Sep 6, 2010 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions
He's been around for a while
Prospectus has like him for the last couple of years..not sure why they’ve dragged their feet on calling him up. He absolutely raked in AA-AAA the last couple of years.
Not really
His AA-AAA season (age 24) in 2008 he hit .315/.456/.628 with 37 homers (!). That earned him exactly 21 big-league at-bats in which he did well, hitting .286/.375/.429. Of course, being the Royals, he didn’t get called up at all until 2009, and spent most of this year in AAA, too.
Weird
I would like that to be the injury replacement of Morneau
by twinscrazy_german on Sep 6, 2010 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Yes, but
the problem is the money they invested in Jose Guillen. They realized quickly he can only DH, and then they have to play Butler at first. Next year, they’ll DH Butler (he’s a butcher at first) and play Kia at first. Or at least, that’s what makes sense. So maybe it won’t happen….
At least it was a strike
There was a recent article about how he’s been trying to swing at more first pitches because he found himself behind in the count too often.
Against most pitchers occasionally swinging at the first pitch is a good idea
because it is often your best bet to be a good pitch. Remember the Redsox a few years ago making a killing on hitting 1st pitch strikes?
Its an interesting game of expectations... keeping pitchers honest
Mauer is notorious for watching the first pitch go by but he’ll punish the pitcher if they just toss up a meatball thinking he won’t swing. His “First Pitch” split is excellent throughout his career. This year, its .536/.536/.929.
It really makes sense that guys would have a good first pitch average
because a high percentage of first pitches are center of the zone fastballs.
I hope that semi-missed opportunity
doesn’t come back to haunt.

If you listen to Bert
There is a way bigger scapegoat pitching out there
by twinscrazy_german on Sep 6, 2010 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Span’s just trying to adjust. Swinging at that first pitch was only stupid because of how wild O’Sullivan has been in this game.
It was a fine at-bat
He got an RBI, and we’re on the board. Wish we could have done more, but it is what it is, and it was a productive at-bat. That’s all. I don’t understand beating this into the ground anymore than it already has been.
Just when I look at the Tolbert AB in gameday I see only 1 ball clearly out of the zone
Tolbert worked three balls. Two of the other pitches called balls were on the white line. The first-pitch strike was belt-high. The ball he ended up hitting for the SF was a meatball right down the middle. I don’t see how he could have gotten a bb there. He wasn’t swinging at junk out of the zone.
Pavano's wife.
I wish they would cut back to the booth more often, she’s more interesting (read: cute) than what’s going on on the field.
Either way.
It sounds like the Pavano’s really like it here in Minnesota, living on a lake and such, maybe that’ll be incentive enough to keep him around another year, I’d be happy about that!
If the Twins are going to gain ground on the Sox
they are going to have to do it themselves. Everyone else doesn’t seem to care.
white sux
if they sweep or get 2 in det they enjoy a big homestand i think theyll have like 16 at home compared to our 8 after this series, gonna be fun!
4 games in det
so you mean get 3 or sweep.
At some point the WSox are going to stop coming back on teams. they aren’t blowing anyone out. then they will start losing some games again.
Yeah it wasn't a bad swing
He hit it pretty hard
I was about to write that
That couldn’t have been good for his stats
by twinscrazy_german on Sep 6, 2010 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, his ABs have really stunk for a couple weeks now...
like he lost his mojo after we told him to stop running…
Run baby run!
O'Sullivan pitch count
is getting up there, too. Mid ’80’s after only twelve outs. I’ll take a 4 inning game between our rested bullpen and theirs. I think.
or mid-'70's
nice number-reading comprehension on my part. Oh, well.
Let's go, Tigers
I know you don’t like us these days, but show some self-respect when playing the White Sox, okay? Unlike the BoSox, who puked up all over the place?
Rochester loses 16-1
Toby Gardenhire pitched 2/3 of an inning, gave up 3 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K. Rochester has nobody left. Justin Turner went 6-6 and hit for the cycle for the Bison. Wow.
Did someone call Kuuuuubes a f***ing Horse ???
Soemone else hear that?

Switching Tolbert around...
Little to they know, his batting average is 250 points higher from the right side
I'm Mr. Obvious and Optimist
two to win
but then again, they don’t have Thome

Hudson
Move Span to 9th. Lineup stays identical but Span loses a PA at the start of the game.
Too easy though… they’ll never do it
Brayan Pena?
Gordon I can see because he was supposed to be good once… but we can’t let scrubs beat us.
He's Guy Smiley
Look at his gameday picture

Why is everyone so worried about the White Sox?
Its the Yankees and Rays that are our bigger concern. We need homefield advantage. We got Sox right where we want em…lets go catch the spankees.
correct
Not sure how the ALCS works

Question
Did we have home field when we imploded against Oakland 4 years ago?
by TwinkieinHawaii on Sep 6, 2010 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions
I admire your optimism.
I bet the Tigers were saying the same last year until they realized that we never lost down the stretch…
Run baby run!
If you replace tolbear with valencia,
everyone in our lineup today could be 1st or 2nd highest batting average on the mariners.
Best case situation: White Sox keep winning
Twins keep winning
Yankees turn into Padres.
All that is good occurs
Joe Girardi goes to Cubs
you forgot
Vikings beat tAints by 80 points
Brees doesnt play for rest of season
Game ends early today so I can get my school work thats due today done
Brought in a LOOGY for Mitch Maier and he can't even get him out
I don’t think Flores can contribute anything to this team
And Matty G is coming in against Billy Butler. Who has 5 hits in 15 ABs. Do they not have baseball-reference.com in the dugout?
Rooting for the Royals to finish ahead of the Indians/WSox/Tigers
Me too… they can beat them any day of the week
How many days off did Guerrier get?
It looks like it did him some good
i thought i saw another infielder to the left of him
maybe 3rd base coach plays third when the royals shift
I don't know
He’s gotta be in there somewhere.
by TwinkieinHawaii on Sep 6, 2010 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Did you really expect him to hit .320 all year?
by Brady Eyestone on Sep 6, 2010 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions
I was careful not to phrase it in the form of a "call"
Our LHB’s had been stymied by LHP’s of late. I was just curious why they weren’t jumping on an RHP with an ERA over 5
I'll say it now and feel silly for even considering this later
The Twins won’t pick up Punto’s option…
thats why you let the grit go
plouffe, tolbert etc can hit for nothing and play infield
But he does all the little things!
What grit he shows, sliding into first, making those defensive plays…
i'm sure we can teach plouffe to slide into first
and be bff with gardy
Ok, Crain time
Was Thursday his last day pitching, too?
Oops
I was supposed to reply to the comment above.

No seriously...
There was something about a contract extension that kicks in next year. I’m trying to find it on google but having trouble with the search words
He did look safe at second though
But the throw beat him there and the tag was close enough
MLB channel is showing our game right now
Make me wish I wasn’t stuck with just radio.
Get the lead out Span!
Bunch of plodders on this team

Yeah,
I don’t know where the ump is supposed to be, but there was no way he could see if he slid under the tag.
by TwinkieinHawaii on Sep 6, 2010 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions
looked like span got that foot in, i agree
don’t like it when umps seem to be making the call based on if the ball beats the runner
I am pretty sure that is in the ump handbook
Ball beats runner, 99% of the time you are going to get an out call
Run baby run!
How does it feel Chicago?
To go on a winning streak and not gain any ground?
