Game 140: Royals @ Twins

Kansas City Royals at Minnesota Twins, Sep 8, 2010 8:10 PM EDT

First Pitch:  7:10 PM CDT
TV:  FSN
Radio:  Twins Radio Network

Know Thine Enemy: Royals Review

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2010 - Brian Duensing 7-2 48 8 1 1 0 0 99.0 87 27 23 7 22 55 2.09 1.10

You kind of run out of good things to say about some of these guys once in a while.  Duensing has simply been what we needed him to be...and that's been huge.  If he pitches well tonight against an underwhelming Kansas City offense, he'll have a chance for another good game.

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2010 - Zack Greinke 8-11 28 28 2 0 0 0 188.1 185 92 81 15 44 155 3.87 1.22

Like Liriano, he's had a pretty good slider this year.  But he doesn't throw it nearly as often as Cisco, and definitely not enough to be in the discussion for baseball's best slider that we went over yesterday.  This won't stop him from using it more often when he's ahead or in two-strike counts.  As is to be expected, it disappears when he's behind.  Right-handed hitters won't see many changeups.

In Twins-related news, it sounds like Brian Fuentes is getting an MRI done on his back.  Jose Mijares doesn't look to be too far away, but come October I'd rather have Fuentes and Mijares in the 'pen as lefties than Mijares and, say, Perkins.

Let's go, offense.

Oh, that's nice

Royals Review has a poll on which division rival they like the least – and the Chisox are running away with it! Congrats Chisox! (Cleveland does not have ANY votes in it’s favor – remember when they used to be at least a little hate-able, rather than just pitiful?)

Hey morales was pretty awesome down the stretch for us last year if I remember correctly

..so maybe he can replicate it -
however I wish that Gardy would move Kubel to DH or give Young a DH day and put Revere in there. Maybe its my defense talking but I might like that. Plus I want to see the guy in action

The Capps trade was awesome

And so is Capps. This is the kind of saves he gets. This is exactly what we bought, and those who actually looked at the non-save stats knew it. Those who assumed he was an elite closer just because of the save numbers need to just accept what he is and move on now, ideally without ever questioning anything ever again. Besides, that Ivan Ranmos catcher guy we gave Washington will never amount to anything anyway. In fact, I seriously doubt he even gets a few extra base hits today!

More than a little bitter (and please don't say 'just move on')

IMO the ‘smoke em if you got em’ style saves that Capps has had for the Twins is Capps at his best, we have not yet seen the worst. He has the normal high WHIP that he will always have, but I think his ERA will move closer to his 3.41 lifetime mark (hopefully not his 5.80 ERA for the Pirates). I still have no idea why the ^$%@ we paid that much for him. I would not be remotely bitter if we moved Ramos for a better closer, but Capps is not and never was a better closer. Heck, if he becomes an elite closer while with the Twins I will be thrilled, though the chances of that happening are about never percent.

I think the bitterness would be less severe if not for all the casual Twins fans who thought it was a good trade at the time and now awkwardly command others to accept it and move on. I know Nick (Nick & Nick blog) liked the deal as well, and I can’t figure out why, but most of the other Twins bloggers as well as national baseball writers panned the Twins FO in the trade.

Anyway, I will be cheering him on, I just hope Gardy loses some faith in Capps and has him on a short leash come playoff time.

by Buddy Grant on Sep 8, 2010 11:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Regarding Capps, I think you're right.

This is as good as he’s going to get. He’s a second tier closer, and probably a bit better than Rauch. I’m praying for Nathan as much as you are! As for Ramos, who knows? I’m not convinced that it was a bad trade.

I don’t know about that second paragraph. I think it was an okay deal, not great and not a disaster. If you’re saying that Gardy should be more willing to pull him if he looks bad, even though he’s the official ‘closer’, I agree.

Just move on. Just kidding…
