Dilemma! Authentic or Replica Jersey?
Hey everybody! Help a brother out: I can't tell what the heck the difference between a "replica" jersey and an "authentic" jersey is. Other than $130.
Trying to decide on a birthday present for the wife, and I want to get her something nice, but it seems like $100 for the replica jersey is what's up. As far as I can tell, they're the same thing minus the patches and crap? Are they the same material? Aargh.

I do NOT think they are the same material.
But honestly, I do not think there is a lick of noticable differences. Authentic is what the players actually wear. Replica LOOKS like what they wear, without it being as expensive.
OR:
Replica is for the peopel who sit in sections 200 and 300.
Authentic is for people who sit behind home plate or in the Legends Club.
I always loved that one.

The difference:
AUTHENTIC
Expensive, well-made, just like what the pros wear. Quality of the material, the stitching, everything. “Twins” script, jersey name and jersey number will be their own material, sewn onto the jersey.
REPLICA
Faux-material, feels very thin when compared to the authentic jersey (which can feel heavy). There will generally be a tag (often on the outside, near the bottom on the front of the jersey) which will say “Replica”. The blue jerseys will appear shiney or glossy. Names and jersey numbers are usually one with the fabric of the jersey, and on the occasion where it is sewn it’s one stitch.
RECOMMENDATION
There’s nothing wrong with the replica jerseys. They look fine, it’s a jersey and you can pay less than half the price of an authentic jersey if you buy at the right time and at the right place. I bought a friend of mine a Mauer replica, and he loves it.
If you have the money, if you want it to last a long (long, long) time and if you’re a bit of a nerd who likes your stuff to be “just like it is in real life”, then definitely go for the authentic. I have an authentic Hunter blue jersey from ’05, and it still looks just as good as the day I was given it.
I should also mention
that if you know the difference between the two, you can tell if someone is wearing an authentic or replica jersey. But most people don’t know the difference.
Indeed
I got a Morneau jersey for Christmas a couple years ago, and while I enjoy it and wear it lots, I can tell it’s not an authentic pretty easily, primarily because of the name and number on the back. Mine has solid blue numbers, rather than the blue and red 2-layer numbers, and the “MORNEAU” was sewn directly on the back, rather than on its own nameplate (although I believe the Twins changed that this year). Still, it’s a Twins jersey, it looks nice, and I’m way too cheap to buy an authentic, so I have no problems with it.

Yes
I actually buy Kid’s replica jersey’s in large, because (a) I like the smaller jerseys that don’t make me look gigantic, and (2) they are like $100 cheaper. I think the Youth jerseys are only like $60.

Women's jerseys
The Women’s shirts also have a piece of velcro that holds the shirt shut at the key point of the chest where the “Twins” script prevents buttons, which allows the wearer to avoid having to wear a shirt underneath the jersey.
My theory on jersey's...
I don’t buy them at all. If I have $100 to spend on a jersey that means I have $100 to spend on tickets.
I bought a couple of replica jerseys
b/c there’s a local place that can letter and number them w/ authentic patches, stitching but after buying my first authentic jersey, I won’t buy a replica again.
you can really feel the difference. If I want a jersey bad enough, I’ll get the real deal.
Sorry I didn't get on here sooner...
The Twins booth at the State Fair was selling authentic jerseys for $50!!! Absolutely ridiculous. I couldn’t help but purchase one and I am glad I did. The material is of nicer quality and a lot thicker than the replicas. Also the patches on the authentic jersey are sewn together and then sewn onto the jersey. The difference is noticeable when they are placed side by side. My only regret is that I didn’t purchase two of them.
$50!
wow, that’s awsome…
Did they have the names and numbers on too?
I might have bought the 40 man roster at that price…
unfortunately no
They were just the regular team jerseys. I haven’t looked into it but I could probably get a name and number put on the jersey and still save money. On the plus side I won’t have to worry about having a jersey with the name of an ex-twin on it.

I will not wear replicas
I think there is a HUGE difference between the two. The replicas are extremely tacky—made with really cheap material and don’t hold up well after washing.
It is like the difference between Miller/Coors/Budweiser and Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA. If you are going to spend the money, may as well get something that is worth the money, otherwise you are just wasting it.
worth the money
It depends upon what the purpose of spending the money is… miller and Coors are worth the money if you want to get drunk. If you like the taste and the experience the good beer is the route to go. Both have their bonuses but each has a different purpose. Same is true with jerseys.
